Sorry if already posted.

Jamari Wheeler. 3 star PG. Was committed to Duquesne. Received offers from Seton Hall and Auburn after he was given his release.

Should be a decent backup to Carr.

We need two JUCOs or grad transfers who are ready to play. One perimeter shooter now that Banks is gone, and one PF who can score down low and take some pressure off of Watkins.

There are about 20 grad transfers left and Lazenby just signed with OU. I wouldn't hold my breath.

That's unfortunate. PSU is just 1 or 2 players away from being a really good team.

Watkins was great for a freshman but not a real offensive threat. Moore is also not a scoring threat and he's a senior. Stevens is not a PF.

Garner & Banks were PSU's perimeter shooters. Banks is gone and Garner is a senior.

I'd hate to waste talent of Watkins, Carr, and Stevens because we can't find a couple of complimentary players.

Which is why I'm never overjoyed when someone transfers. My first question is always: what will his replacement look like? So far, I ain't turning cartwheels.

They have a couple of Grad candidates. How do you know there are only 20 left? Where did you find the list? Pat just needs one and the kid from Lafayette would fit nicely at 6'5" and a swing guy who would replace Banks production. They only need 10-15 pts from their bench. The starting five should get them 60-65 pts....

Is the Chinese kid ready?

Monty Boykins? LMFAO. Put a hand in his face and watch his shooting percentage crater I'm sure he'll find defenders to be a little more robust in the Big Ten than the Patriot League. All of that assumes he won't break down physically, which his history puts in doubt.

As far as lists of transfers, they're out there. Do some research, not hard to find.

I count 57 grad transfers still available. Granted many of them are transferring down, not up/lateral.

Wheeler is a nice pick up. Fits Chambers' style well and can shoot (unlike last year's backup PG).

Is the 57 at all division levels or just D1?

From TOS.

"Jamari's high school (The Rock) is 5 minutes from my house. The kid can flat out fly on the court...one of the quickest guards I've seen play in high school.

His high school coach reminds me of Coach Chambers. The Rock is a "basketball school" run like a small college program and they play the best schools/players in the country. So Jamari's transition to PSU should be quick.

When I first heard we offered I was super excited...a diamond in the rough. Could be our next Frazier with a better shot."

TIFWIW. I like the pickup and they've been on him since December!

Seton Hall is not Kentucky, but they are top half of the Big East and made the Tournament the last two years. Kevin Willard is a very good coach and they have had very good guard play.

So if the Hall thought Wheeler was somebody they wanted, I'd say that is a very good sign.

Sure, it's a small state with not too many people. They likely play horse in each others driveway.

Yeah, and Pensacola and Naples are just a hop, skip, and jump from each other.....like from Philadelphia to Detroit.

We really need somebody who can play in the paint. I would think PSU would be a very attractive option, given the guarantee of immediate playing time and the rest of the roster being talent - laden.

I was hoping we could attract a top 100 player to join Watkins, Stevens, & Carr. Let's hope Buttrick & Wheeler can play above their 2* ratings.

Immediate playing time, yes. But you'd still be a backup PG behind a guy who could end up one of the better players in program history.

Look at it this way. Seton Hall's PG situation is a lot more dire than PSU's.

Two stars = haven't researched him enough to rate him.

You can tell yourself that. I'm sure that a few 2* kids go on to play professional ball but the law of averages says you'll do much better with higher rated kids.

Why were we so excited about Carr being a top 50 player if ratings don't matter?

Let me guess. He averaged 32 minutes a game.

;)
No, apparently he wasn't good enough.

Sorry I couldn't resist. Listen, I really hope this guy can make a contribution. I'm looking for a guy like Cornley or Stephens.

He plays smaller than his 7-foot frame.

;)
Not to worry, according to some on here (one hasn't been around for a long time) we are going to be world beaters this year. Pat finally has things going his way and we will zoom up to about 11th in the Big, thereby buying five more years for Pat.

No excuses for Pat this year. He's got a lot of talent with just a few holes.

PG: Carr had very good stats for a true freshman. I'm not sure about his ability to break down the defense and create scoring opportunities for his teammates but he can use his size score over his opponent in the paint. His defense was marginal but I'm hopeful that will improve. IMO Samuels is a big loss because he was Carr's backup. Wheeler is going to have to fill that role.

SG: Garner didn't improve as a junior but I expect him to be solid this year. The problem is what other perimeter shooters do we have now that Banks is gone. PSU really needs a shooter like Mike Walker back in the day. He doesn't have to be super athletic, he just has to be able to score and keep the defense honest.

G/F: Reaves is all over the court on defense. I expect him to make better decisions as a junior but I doubt that he'll ever become a great perimeter shooter. Bostick could be a similar player. He doesn't have a history of being a great perimeter shooter.

F: Stevens is very athletic and should have a great career at PSU. The only problem is his size. 218 lbs makes him suited to be a 3/4, not a pure 4. Zemgulus is the only backup and he really struggled last year. Buttrick has the body but he seems like a bit of a project.

C: Watkins has the potential to be one of the best centers we've had at PSU. Great rebounder and shot blocker with the ability to catch and pass the ball. He has to learn to be a little smarter and avoid needless fouls. Moore is an adequate backup as long as you don't count on him for more than 10 minutes per game. I have no idea what to expect from Pierce.

Walker & Cornley would make this an almost certain NCAA team IMO but I don't see those guys on the horizon. Maybe Gavin Peppers is our shooting guard. Too bad we can't attract any of the top 10 PA kids.

Of course we'd all rather have top 50 guys. But when you suddenly need players and you're at the end of the recruiting cycle it's not easy to find players. The ones you typically find that have other high major offers (like Wheeler) are ones that were late bloomers or otherwise not on the radar of the recruiting services.

I agree no excuses this year, but there will be excuse makers on this board if they fail to live up to any expectations. They're still young, no coach can win at Penn State, they're one or two players away....and on and on. Hopefully things start to click this year and we don't lose to some of our lowly OOC opponents like last year. Then win the games against the lower Big teams and pull a couple of upsets. Finish in the top half of the the conference.

When the b1g was down last season, Penn State was too young. If Penn State falters next season, some here will most likely say that the b1g is much improved compared to last year. There is always an excuse.

The big ten wasn't down last year... so many of the posters on this board gripe and complain about the media and yet the eagerly swallow whatever crap the media wants to throw out there. Just because some of the teams that you expect to be at the top of the league (MSU, tOSU, and IU) are not dominating, doesn't mean that these teams are not as good. In this case, the bottom of the league has improved, meaning that the separation between first place and last isn't so great.
