How do you feel about the additions of Rutgers and MD now?

I don't think it was actually about whether anybody watched, but whether the cable companies there would add the BTN for most subscribers for $x/month. I think it basically worked out the way they wanted it to. I don't know that the league cared whether it was Rutgers or Syracuse who was the vehicle for that

Both Comcast and Verizon carried the BTN before Rutgers became a member.

I think the Big 10 should go after UVa and UNC in the east. Additionally and Kansas and Iowa State out west. Make one last run at ND. If by some miracle ND joins the Big 10 then try to add WVU or Duke.
I saw wvu's preferred spot is the acc. I would be ok with kansas and iowa state only if 2 eastern teams like uva and unc came as well

Agree ! Their "holier than thou" BS got old many years ago.
I feel same way about UNC and their holier than thou “Carolina Way” BS. UNC is the ACC political big dog though. Don’t see them giving it up.

yes, but I think CableVision only had it on a sports-specific tier that most people didn't subscribe to. Then after Rutgers joined they put it on a more general one. And they may have picked up some other cable providers too

Start with this. There are 7.5mm TV-viewing households in the NYC DMA.

Which is more than the entire population of Indiana, where the B1G has two members.
Indiana has been a member of the Big ten since 1900, but keep deflecting. Try doing some arithmetic and see how little BTN money Rutgers brought to the conference.

That's actually not deflecting, it's demonstrating that there are other schools that probably bring less.

It's impossible to do that arithmetic because you would need a model that tells you how many subscribers are attributable to Rutgers and Maryland, and then factor in the non-zero probability that they got the BTN onto the additional cable tiers anyway. And then you would have to factor in that they might have gotten onto those tiers at a lower rate without those schools joining. And all of this needs to be probability weighted. So you need a stochastic model. But I'm sure you already thought about all of that, and already have a model and know the answer.

I have a range and the high end doesn't come close to justifying Rutgers's membership.

But you're missing both the forest and the trees and I'm not surprised.

I’m very glad Maryland joined. I’m a Maryland grad, and still live in DMV, so I appreciate the connection.
Absolutely, not to mention they long history on the field with both schools. Rutgers is going to be fine with Schiano back at the helm, they had some bad hires after he left and paid the price, Schiano has proven he can win there, they are recruiting pretty damn well the last I looked as well.

As I just said, I don't think there's a reliable way to do the calculation without building a sophisticated model. So, I am not the one who said I had calculated a range.

But you know that Rutgers pays for itself. That's good enough for me.

I never said that either. Definitely did not say that and I don't know if they do or they don't. But did payouts to each school increase or decrease since 2015?

TW and Cablevision in NJ both paid in network carriage rates after Rutgers joined.

Awful Announcing at the time estimated it 6 years ago to be worth around $48M.

But I’ve had this argument with Al before and he doesn’t agree with the numbers. You do also need to consider the 51% that Fox owns.

I think it's still more complicated than that. I don't know if it's even possible to measure the amount attributable to each school.

Typical Art. Talks like he knows everything but is afraid to put actual figures behind his boasts.

It's fine with me. I think the question is awfully complicated.

It is possible that Rutgers gets paid more than they are worth annually, but that their entrance also furthered negotiations that made the conference better off overall, and increased payouts. It is possible that these things are simultaneously true.

You can’t get uva without va tech. State politics won’t allow it.

I agree with you. It’s difficult to know without the fine details. But know it all Art loves to talk like he has all this information, but unsurprisingly he never shares the information he claims to have. His go to response is to tell people to do their own research.

Its true that a very tiny percentage of people in the NY metropolitan are give a crap about Rutgers, but there are multiples of that who DO care about PSU, UM, tOSU and other B1G schools. Rutgers justified the B1G being broadcast and NYC as a site for hoops and hockey games.

Im fine with RU and MD, but I'd bet that the B1G would've taken UConn over Rutgers if they had wrestling and hockey. Is UConn a member of the academic cabal that most B1G schools belong to?

The simple math says we added more pieces to the pie and the pieces still got larger. Art’s argument would be more compelling if we saw the payouts drop after Rutgers ramped up their % share.

It’s been over 6 years, that Rutgers and Maryland have been added to the Big Ten, with conference payments soon exceeding $60M, thx in large part to the additional cable boxes we brought to the table. Of course, there will always be a natural antagonism between the fanbases, because y’all take many of the recruits we want. But Greg Schiano is recruiting more competitively, and we should be able to put a better product on the field in short order.

I feel happy that we get to play Penn State every year, and have the game circled on my calendar.

Maryland owes the Big Ten about $150,000,000 now.

Just shut up Al!

It's also kind of silly to focus on whether one school is getting paid more than they bring to the table. If the agreement is equal payouts, then everyone is getting paid an amount different than they are worth. but they have all individually concluded that being in the conference leaves them better off than going it alone.

I think there is a fallacy that Rutgers brings the NY TV market. Rutgers is not a New York school - it’s a central NJ school. New York City does not have a college football draw because there are no big college NYC football programs. People there watch professional sports of which there is an over abundance with the Giants/Jets, Yankees/Mets, Islanders/Rangers/Devils, and the Knicks/Nets all dominating the air waves.
Remember when #15 Rutgers hosted #3 Louisville back in 2006, during one of the strangest years ever in college football.. and they lit the Empire State Building in Rutgers scarlet? I'm pretty sure they had ESPN's primetime game that week.

If Rutgers ever became a serious threat in the B1G east division, I bet NYC would get behind it.

That is true, and that year was weird (was that the year when USF, Kansas, Missouri all briefly became national title contenders?).

But I also think they light up the Empire State Building for all kinds of things that nobody cares about.

Most people in nyc that care about college football already have an allegiance elsewhere.

Chicago has Northwestern, but most of the city roots for other schools. Same deal, but even less people care about Rutgers.

I think it's still more complicated than that. I don't know if it's even possible to measure the amount attributable to each school.

It's also ancient history, which wasn't terribly accurate to begin with.

And you're right, it is complicated and impossible to get a good handle on unless you're an insider i.e. work for the BTN. But here are some tidbits to ponder:

1. BTN carriage fees did not change for the satellite companies of Verizon., nor did BTN tier placement;

2. the number of NJ households who subscribe to cable or satellite is somewhere around 60% and dropping per the BPU. In the area of NYC, other NY and CT counties included in the DMA it's estimated to be between 45-50%. Not able to get a number on Pike Co, PA.

3. the only cable operators who ever paid a carriage fee of $1/subscriber/month were the dinks. Per FranktheTank the average carriage fees were $0.36/subscriber/month. Per Joe Nocera, the largest cable operators in the NYC area pay about $0.35.

4. the information in Point 3 is dated. Much more difficult to discern what BTN carriage fees are these days because Fox negotiates them as a package with FS1 and FS2.

5. also, do not overlook the fact that the carriage fees are paid to the BTN, not the conference. Fox owns slightly more than half of the BTN.

That is correct so long as someone requests and pays for it, which Rutgers did.

You go first.
Art,
I may be wrong but I believe the increase in cable revenues as of 2018 is approximately 21 million annually. If, Schiano could put together a winning season that number can only grow. Agree?

What does that $21mm represent?

As for the number increasing, the BTN's contract with the Conference runs through 2032 so Schiano will have to put together a string of winning seasons because I don't hink Fox is that stupid.

This is correct. This brought the Big 10 a ton more money. Both Rutgers and Maryland have been net positives in terms of revenue to the Big 10, allowing it to negotiate more lucrative TV packages. The year before Rutgers and Maryland joined, the Big Ten distributed roughly $30 M per team. Very soon that will be $60M per team.

Feel no different now. Both will be eternal doormats in the East division.

Oh, soon it will be $120m per team lol...as long as the associated debt is not netted out ... it looks fine. Other Market alternatives were pursued by the B1G that were better. Oh, well. The B1G is looking again as the race to galactic conference status goes on...

I am thinking the B1G should go after the Canadian Market by adding Western and Laval. It would only have to invest 500 mill into each universities infrastructure to get it done ..
Lol

Or, University of Hawaii and National University of Taiwan... to capture that pacific island and Chinese Market in a go little go big capture it all approach...lol

After that.. there is the 5 year interplanetary marketing plan.. lol
