at nationals? Specifically sessions 1-5. Trying to coordinate with different friends for different sessions to maximize fun for all in the Burgh. Thanks in advance, all knowing board.

About 3.5 hours but it varies. If all goes well (we win all 9 1st round matches) all of the PSU wrestlers will be done in less than 2 hours on Thursday night.

An idea can be gained from Fan Fest scheduled daily opening time compared to that day's early session start time.

Fan Fest is open:
  • Thursday, 3/21 - 3 to 7PM
  • Friday, 3/22 - 2 to 7:30PM
  • Saturday, 3/23 - 1 to 6:30PM.
So one can figure the early day sessions (start time in parenthesis) will end:
  • I (12PM) - 2:45PM
  • III (11AM) - 1:45PM
  • V (11AM) - 12:45PM.
The Fan Fest at David L. Lawrence Convention Center is about a 15 minute walk from PPG Paints Arena.

Just curious, what kind of coordination? Meet up with friends who live there, or be at Bar A for an hour and Bar B for an hour, etc?

It’s not easy to do, since an arenas worth of people are all descending on the local food and bar scene. You are generally better to get your phones and texts going when you land in a spot.

It is the best sporting event I ever attended becuase of that three day between session fest. I gave up on too much coordination in favor of go with the flow and the experience became loads better.

First time attending nationals, so not exactly sure yet. Have some out of town friends, some local, so it is going to be tricky, especially with the rest of the arena with similar thoughts. Might be best going with the flow, as you mentioned, since it is so easy to text updates minute to minute.

One thing you don;t want to do is pick a spot close to the arena between sessions. Those are always a ZOO.

Also, the chances that Session I is over by 2:45 are very small and the last match assigned in Session I will be Cassar's first round match. There are 170 matches in the first session across 8 mats so the equivalent of 2.1 dual meets, without the timeouts and half time that duals have.

And, like PSU duals, there will be a fair number of "shorter" matches in the first round. :)

Here are the times per my tv guide on ESPN (night sessions) and U (afternoon sessions). The below notes are off of my memory and how many mats are listed on ESPN 3 for each session. I wasn't sure if Sessions II and III had dedicated championship bracket mats or if they were just assigned wherever?

Thursday, March 21
Session I (12 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.) - 8 mats (170 bouts)
- Pigtails
- Round of 32 - I think pigtail winners get thrown in around weight 157? (which could potentially end up with 5-6 #1 seeds on the mat about midway through the morning session)

Session II (7 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.) - 8 mats (170 bouts)
- Consolation Pigtails (all first?)
- Round of 16/Consolation Round 1 (do they run at the same time with four mats dedicated to each?)

Friday, March 22
Session III (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.) - 8 mats (160 bouts)
- Quarterfinals
- Second/Third round consolations (do these run at the same time with dedicated quarterfinal mats?)

Session IV (8 p.m. - 11 p.m.) - 6 mats (80 bouts)
- Semifinals (middle two mats)
- Consolation Round 4 (Round of 12)/Consolation Round 5

Saturday, March 23
Session V (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.) - 3 mats (50 bouts)
- Consolation Semifinals (I assume these have to go first)
- 3rd/5th/7th place matches - I think these all go in weight order as long as they have minimum rest?

Session VI (7 p.m. - 10 p.m. - 1 championship mat (10 weights)
- Championship start weight decided I think after the semifinals on Friday?

If anyone has anything I am missing or that looks incorrect let me know

AFAIK
Thursday 7 pm Session 2 in this order, 8 mats each: pigtail WBs (bouts 171-180) THEN Round 2 (bouts 181-260) THEN consolation WBs (bouts 261-340)

Friday 11am Session 3: inside mats for quarterfinals (bouts 341-380) at the same time as outside mats for rounds 2 and 3 WBs (bouts 381-500). After championship quarterfinals are over, all 8 mats used for remaining WBs.
