I am sorry, but I now think it's the greatest match in NCAA history.

Smith v Ryan ( just because it was the first four time champ)
DT v Dake
Perry V Hendricks
Lewis v J Gibbons ( this last match is particularly epic)
To name a few but I do think this is top ten all time

I like that after Joseph got done hugging mom and pop, he held up 3 fingers, presumably to announce "3 more to go!" Stay hungry!

Notice how the red, "C" sweaters absolutely refuse to cheer. LMAO.

THAT is the real effect of the sleeping giant, awakening: The people who reaped so well, while the giant remained dormant, are hurt the most.

Fine with me.

Notice how Cenzo's Dad and Mom are?

Good parents.
absolutely ....sat with them at Army dual and ran into them at other matches/tournaments ... seem like awesome folks ...not at all like folks living thru the accomplishments of their kid ..good folks to talk to

You can see it in their mannerisms. The kind of people that you would be proud to call your friends....

This is what Cael and Penn State are all about.

Must say the more times I watch that, the more I am impressed with VinJo's strength and physicality (and his ability to maintain his spacing via collar-ties) - have never seen anyone (including Jason) win the "horsing battle" with I-Mar as VinJo did in that match. That is the one area where I-Mar has consistently beat everyone he's wrestled.....except VinJo - i.e., lb-for-lb "strength" and "power". VinJo really did go out there and just out-wrestle I-Mar....not only out-wrestled him, but beat him at his own game. More impressive every time you watch it - the more times you watch it, the more you believe that VinJo may become PSU's first ever 4x Champion (possibly only because he will likely wrestle in the 4th Final a couple matches before Wreck Hall !!!).

You do know that the Big Red's Head Coach is the son of PSU's Head Coach from 1965 - 1978, yes?

LOL, of course bro.

I was at Rec Hall when Rob won his state championship in the PIAA, and I wish to God they would bring it back to Rec Hall, instead of Hershey.

But, that's another conversation, lmao.

I just have a weird problem with Cornell, sorry Cowbell, in advance.

Dont think you can leave Gable-Owings off of all time greatest matches.

Sort of. My problem with Gable vs Owings, is two fold:

1. Owings dropped down TWO weight classes, and today that doesn't happen.

2. The match was HORRIBLY officiated, Gable was basically robbed.

Just unreal. Straight Ninja stuff. Cenzo has the presence of mind to use his right hand to stop himself, unlocks his arms DURING the throw, and then uses his head as a friggin fulcrum and rotates his body 180 degrees to the side, in the space of about 1.5 seconds.

Unreal.

The more I watch it, the more it amazes me.

And he outwrestled Imar for the entire 5 minutes BEFORE it happened. Just incredible.

I talked to Bill Koll after Jerry White lost to Mark Johnson in 1977 in the semi's, even though I was too young to understand. He was a great man, and a great coach. He told me that Jerry "wrestled as well as he could". It was heartbreaking. Jerry took 3rd that year and was an All American, but he came from my high school, and we were certain that he would win a National Championship.

It was then, that I began to understand, how competitive the sport was, at the highest level.

Or was he indicating "3" titles for Penn State at that point? These guys are unusually team-oriented.
Good point!

By the way, without my glasses on, a lower case ell ("l") looks kinda like a lower case eye ("i"). So, your text "3 titles" made me wonder why you were referencing the following :):

Koll was an accomplished wrestler, but not a great coach. To me he was the guy that started the sleeping giant tradition.

The guy who owns the second-highest career winning percentage (behind only Cael) in Penn State coaching history? That Bill Koll? I'm having a little trouble with it. He may not have been as good a coach as he was a wrestler, but you might be able to say the same about Cael after all.

0 championships in 14 years vs 6 in 8 years? Yeah OK, it's a real tight comparison, great point.

Having a bad day? That is a total non sequitor. By your standards, Lorenzo, Speidel and Fritz are mediocre in that case because they had lower winning percentages than did Koll and none of them won any titles, either.

The point I was making is that Koll is, fairly convincingly, the second best coach in PSU wrestling history. To say "he was not a great coach" is a pretty heavy slight for a guy that had a career .852 winning %.

Koll was a good coach, as were Lorenzo and Fritz.

The Cruz Gilman overtime finish ranks High for excitement-pathos. Watching Gilman take that loss hurt and I've never been a fan. There could be a thread just on hardest losses. Dean and Imar would kick it off.

I'm not ashamed to admit I loved seeing Gilman go down. Forget the fact he was so vocal all season although that was a big reason. I love seeing our PA boys win National Championships and the win gave Cruz a chance to do just that.

I think Rob Koll won his state championship in Hershey. You may have seen him wrestle at Rec Hall for the Challenge of Champions (AA vs. AAA state champs) though.

The ESPN commentator nailed it saying:
" A stunning upset for the RS FS Vincenzo Joseph, and many thought Isaiah Martinez would continue his string of championships............but instead his season ended on his back"

Just brings a shit eating grin to my face every time

I remember being at Rec Hall and the place erupting with a Koll win. I cannot give you the exact year. Actually, it doesn't matter. Koll won the match and Rec Hall went crazy.

That's a worthy sentiment- I secretly liked what a manic villain Gilman was and was stunned to see him go down. Cruz is a credit to the sport sometimes nice guys finish first.

If you had been there to see the match live, you would understand why it is still the greatest NCAA finals match to this day. The atmosphere in the arena that night was incredible. Both wrestlers had pinned their way to the finals and everyone knew it was going to be a battle. I've seen many, many matches since then and I still think it was the most exciting match I've ever seen.

However, that being said, I definitely agree that the Joseph vs Imar final is one of the best ever. I was watching it in a sports bar and I jumped out of my chair and slammed both palms down on the table. I got a few wierd looks but so what. I'm sure everyone on this board felt the same way.
