I am surprised PSU hockey tickets aren't selling

I know the students are out of town. But given how amazing hockey playoffs are, I would've expected them to sell out quickly. Instead, it looks like the place will be pretty empty.

Because this format is a greed fest. We just played Minny last weekend and now it’s a repeat. No buzz there. They have also dumped on season ticket holders, like myself, by not allowing you to post and sell your tix on the ticket exchange site for less than $30. A lot of tickets were eaten this year because of that.

I have said before, I was slow to accept the fact that college sports are a business. Years ago I would have thought a full house was more important than a full athletic department bank account. Not so.

Actually what is surprising is how many season tix holders did not buy their seats for the tourney. They did not even charge credit cards until after last Saturday night. I know some dumbasses that have now spent more money to buy tix on Ticketmaster than it would have cost them to buy the tix if they would have bought their regular season seats for first two games.

And to the one that said no buzz, you are crazy. This will be a tough series and team not is only playing to advance but also to make sure they get into the regionals. If folks cannot get excited about that it is on them, not the team.

If there were any buzz then more than half the arena would be sold. Here's what tickets look like as of the moment. Blue and Red dots are seats that are available. Clearly this demonstrates no buzz outside of a few diehard fans.

Well, it’s not just students who will be out of town. Lots of people connected to the university take off and leave town. Also, I believe State College school district has the same break so many families plan trips out of town. Timing couldn’t have been worse.

The expansion of college playoffs pose a difficult choice for fans. Do you go to first round of Big playoff or wait for possible placement in national tourney and go to a regional game? Midwest regional is at PPL Center in Allentown. If we get there, I'll be there. More at stake there. The same holds true for football. Do you go to the Big championship in Indy or do you wait to go to a playoff game or bowl game? Anyone who can do all is way out of my league financially.

I've purchased tickets on the ticket board here. If you're looking to sell for under $30, they'll always sell here.

Well that is on the individuals if they are not excited. I have season tix holder friends that picked B1G wrestling tourney over hockey this weekend, I get that. Also have hockey season tix holder friends that are picking B1G BB tourney over it, that I don’t get, especially since they say they hate NYC. As someone said, timing is bad all around with spring break and other tournaments. We have not missed a men’s game in Pegula since it opened, not starting now.

Stub hub just bought 4 for 20 a piece for Friday. WOW . Lots of tickets available.

Of course it is. That's what BUZZ is, by definition. It's your fan base getting excited about an event. Clearly, the hockey fan base is not excited about this event. Hence, no BUZZ.

Damn, wish I lived close enough to drive to State College for the weekend (I live in Chicagoland).

I think part of the problem is lack of publicity. Die hard psu hockey fans are well aware of the games but I’d bet if you walked around Harrisburg, York, Allentown etc most people wouldn’t even know they are playing this weekend.

I don’t think PSU does enough to market its (relatively new) hockey program outside of Centre County. IMO psu should try to set up a relationship with a statewide channel like PCN (that already broadcasts high school football/ basketball and Piaa championships). Get a deal to televise psu hockey (and other) games when they aren’t televised on BTN.

Most people don’t live in State College and ‘out of sight, out of mind’ becomes an issue IMO.

Yeah, pretty sure the point is that it's not on the fans or the team. If anyone, it's on the athletic departments for making these opportunities less appealing to the fans despite a team's success. Most likely, it's just the market indicating it's topped out. Times have changed.

I hope people show up and support the team. The athletes deserve the support and would likely be disappointed by too many empty seats. But let's not forget the dilutive effect of all these sports entertainment options and that attending college-related events has historically been a lower-priced, local option with less capacity and less competition. No matter how much people love the sport or Penn State, there's only so much time and so much money. Supply and demand.

Penn State knows that. Penn State teaches that.

Even the local paper, the CDT, has not had an article about the team. There is almost no local publicity outside of social media. Someone from the hockey booster club wrote to the CDT about lack of coverage. The response yesterday was that they were sorry but still nothing in the paper today. We'll be there but we were in Detroit last year and Cincy too. Trying to rally some out-of-towners with promises of no lines at the bars!

The CDT announced some major changes within the last few weeks, the most notable locally was that they would no longer be covering many local high school sports. What went under the radar at the same time was an announcement that they would no longer be covering PSU hockey (the Notre Dame series was the last time that they sent a reporter and wrote an article).

The cdt recently reorganized and they don’t cover hockey anymore. They used to send a reporter to games but that doesn’t exist any longer.

I’m battling the flu or I’d be making the drive. Major disappointment. Saturday’s actually sold for face. Friday has been impossible due to the $30 requirement by State.

Just posted Friday’s on the ticket exchange ($20/ea center ice).

Anyone know how to print playoff tickets from my NLC account so I can share them? I'm trying to share some seats that I can't use, but using mobile tickets seems to be the only option, other than transferring the tickets to someone else with an NLC account who will then have to use mobile tickets.

Everything is mobile. However I think I did read that as long as the tix are in someone’s name and they can provide ID, they will assist them at will call.

I wonder how much this coming storm also impacted things? It also a huge sports weekend with B10 basketball and wrestling tournaments, district basketball championships, regional wrestling tournaments. So with school out on break I can see why attendance is down.

Normally you can, but for the short turn around tournament, they've made everything mobile. No printing of tickets.

Then why are download and print tickets available on VividSeats, StubHub, etc.? There must be a way to print because others are doing it somehow.

They are lying if they say that. Those sellers are going to have to electronic transfer, buyers are going to have to load Go PSU Sports Ap and upload the QR on to account and have scanned on mobile device.

Not for theses games. I bought tickets on Vivid Monday morning, before I knew there would be all kind of tickets available. Only accessible on my PSU Sports app.

The issue must be that Gadowsky has lost the locker room and, as a result, the fans.

;)

Part of the point. Why do small papers with limited budgets need to send reporters to games? What will be missed that isn’t already captured and broadcast everywhere almost in real time? There are live streaming cameras all over!

Related slightly, I miss the days where the Saturday games were afternoon games and not a 7pm face-off. And some weekend series were Saturday/Sunday with both games being daytime starts, and not always Friday/Saturday.

I have been to way fewer games the past 2 years due to this, I still have my season tickets, but mostly just end up selling them off to someone.
