recruit the athlete first and the student second. You know that the athlete of today isn't interested in school he is interested in getting prepared for the pro game. So that's what you promise the kid. College sports are not what they were when Joe was coaching. College sports , especially Football and Basketball are Big Business. The Elite Football and Basketball programs know this. .

The problem is, less than 1 percent of the dopes make it to the pros. The rest turn to crimes, being bums, or just regular Joes.

Even some of the pros turn out to be tools and morons.

Bums? Most Athletes are motivated and do very well in life. You are singling out the minority. How many guys get in trouble on a pro team in a year? Let's say 3. That would be maybe 5 percent of a team. Would you say out of 100 people in this country you would have 5 people that have had trouble? Maybe a DUI or a domestic problem or a fistfight? I think you will find similar problems with non Athletes. Just an observation.

Look at Touchhole Tony Dorsett. The guy had it made and today he's a drunk and a bum.

The IRS took everything he had because he is an idiot. Creditors took some as well. He didn't belong in school because it did nothing for him.

This is a false statement.

Id rather still believe in the idea of the grand experiment than sell your soul for the likes of programs such as Alabama and Ohio State. I guess if that means we bounce around the top 20 with the occasional season where the stars align, so be it. At the end of the day, I’d rather be proud of the athletes at Penn State, on and off the field, than setting high character aside for the sake of acquiring the best athletes.

All that being said, we still need to have coaches that set our athletes up to succeed rather than running a fake fg from the 2 yard line. Either kick the fg or put the proper personnel out on the field to succeed. That’s just bad coaching.

I completely agree. Penn State could easily be undefeated right now. You just have to play a little better. It is just like yesterday, the staff didn't think it was worth a chip block on two NFL caliber passs rushers. That has nothing to do with whether PSU was good enough.

Do you have a link to that info?

Not trolling, just interested. I had no idea that Tony Dorsett had fallen on hard times.

No, he isn't.
In 1985 the IRS seized his assets. Google it, the UPI and others ran stories on it.

His kid did set him up in a BBQ sauce business, "Tony's 33 Sauce" which he promptly drank the assets away and it went under.

His mother tossed him out of the small house she had. Five million dollars? Where'd that come from?

The thing is, despite it all, we easily could have won that game... and illinois... and iowa... and even osu. Mistakes here and there were the difference (not so much vs iowa) and depth played a role throughout the season.

I think you can still commit to the student aspect and win, just not win it all.

The question is whether you want to sell out and play for the MNC (most oldsters here won't go for it, but perhaps younger blood would).... or try to stay the course and accept you have a shot at top 10 but more likely look to be top 20, win 8-9 games, play in a middling bowl.

It isn't that cut and dried, but the past couple years are showing the cracks in the foundation. This team could easily be undefeated despite it all.. but we're 6-4 and looking at 7-5 (win the next 3 and finish 9-4 and things would look much better for our future... anything worse than 2-1 is going to cause a lot of problems).

So you claim to prefer a HC who stresses academics and character ... you know, as James Franklin does.

Then you criticize that same coach for a decision that failed.

I'm neither defending nor condemning the decision, but your comments about accepting "bouncing around the top 20" do not align with maligning a HC who has so far adhered to all the "grand experiment" factors you claim willing to accept.

I would think Like OJ and others his annual pension is more than enough for a pretty nice lifestyle .
By the time the IRS was finished, with penalties and interest, there was nothing left. Except a case of wet brain.

So a coach can recruit quality student athletes, but they can’t be criticized for their actual in-game coaching decisions? Ok.

Sounds like “he has to run faster” as our non rival /rival coach once muttered.

Classy Response, Tony like many football players has been diagnosed with dementia due to football concussions. your article is also from 1985. How many players at PSU are majoring in Sports and Recreation? You sound like NOTRE DAME fans , when their team loses blame it on our strict Academics. Lol . I personally know 2 kids that wrestled at PSU that after their eligibility ran out enrolled in another university to get a meaningful degree cause the commitment to wrestling would not permit , time wise, a meaningful course of study AT PSU. Show me a list of declared majors for kids on the football team and a lot of them are studies to keep them eligible. PSU is no different than other BIG TIME programs. Kids are getting in main campus that would not normally get in cause they are athletes. It happens everywhere. Bob White almost couldn’t read and he got in .

Lol... I thought it was Jurevicus.

I honestly don't mind the not emphasizing the academic part as they are going to school to better their future and their future is football. However, I do not and will not cheer for a team that has no values as far as being a person and a good human being. I may be on a real reach here but decision making to me is WAY more important than if a kid can pass a math class. We have had a stolen bike, we have had WAY more weed infractions then ever in the past. I think it should be legal but it is not....and when you break the law you break the law. It comes down to making a decision.

Do you realize PSU recruited Tony Dorsett too and he would have been accepted into Psu in a heartbeat? You make it sound like PSU doesn’t take players like him ? You are wrong.

What has Tony Dorsett have to do with the original statement?

Yes he was recruited. When he found out what Joe expected, he bailed.

Franklin’s decision to go for a fake FG had nothing to do with the outcome of the game.

What makes you think Penn State student athletes go on to live better lives than the student athletes of football factories ?

Do graduation rates correlate with "better life?" It would depend on your definition of a better life. If I were an athlete that didn't graduate but I went on to have even a short but successful NFL career I'd consider that to be a damn good life, and a financially lucrative one at that.
Less than 1 percent from all schools make it. The touting of football as "a way out" is a fantasy.
