If you want to win in College Football today you

Yes he was recruited. When he found out what Joe expected, he bailed.
Well kind of, except the real story is a little different...

Once discussing Dorsett in the early 1980s, Joe Paterno said, "We thought we had the perfect situation for Dorsett. He could back up Cappy for a year," and then be a three-year starter.

Paterno credited Pitt's pursuit, but also felt, "Wefell asleep."

"When I came out of high school, I was an All-American running back and all-state defensive back," he recalled. "When I met with Joe, he said, 'You play defensive back your first year, and then we'll move you to running back. But my thought process was -- I was pretty confident, maybe a little cocky -- if I play defensive back, I want to be a good DB, and they won't want to move me. That was what discouraged me the most."

Until then, Penn State was in position toland the elusive tailback who would lead Pitt to the 1976 national title, winning the Heisman Trophy in the process.

"One of my last high school football games was against Beaver Falls, and I had a monster game," Dorsett said. "The next day in the Beaver County Times, it said, 'Penn State, next stop.' I wanted to go there. I was very familiar with the Franco Harris and Lydell Mitchell tandem, and I looked at it as somewhat like a Running Back U."

So all of the D1 football players that don't go pro are drunken bums......this board is full of old trash. In every walk of life people have issues, but to act as if every player that didn't make it to the pros everywhere is a criminal or a drunk could be the dumbest sh!t ever posted on this site.

Every single day of my life....me, Condy, jablowmeudumarse, Un3dHelpcoocooBird. You honestly think your little theories are true and it's always been cute. I guess that is what happens to people with multiple personality disorders.....they think everyone else is like them. Have a great life pnny and stay on the meds as your personalities need them. Take care of yourself. Toodles.

Well, Dondi, you just described yourself.

recruit the athlete first and the student second. You know that the athlete of today isn't interested in school he is interested in getting prepared for the pro game. So that's what you promise the kid. College sports are not what they were when Joe was coaching. College sports , especially Football and Basketball are Big Business. The Elite Football and Basketball programs know this. .
Not so sure I agree with this. I think it is still possible to compete and even win a national championship with "Scholar Athletes", maybe not as often as it is to do so with just "Athletes", but still possible. Our issues this year had more to do with coaching and bad luck than it did with talent level IMO.

Bums? Most Athletes are motivated and do very well in life. You are singling out the minority. How many guys get in trouble on a pro team in a year? Let's say 3. That would be maybe 5 percent of a team. Would you say out of 100 people in this country you would have 5 people that have had trouble? Maybe a DUI or a domestic problem or a fistfight? I think you will find similar problems with non Athletes. Just an observation.
I agree for the most part, however, elite athletes do tend to be sheltered, protected and coddled a bit more so than your average Joe.
