IMO Dave Joyner gets waaaay too much credit here

I hear you, and I'm not trying to argue that any of that isn't true - I believe it. But in my book, Joyner would have gotten an awful lot of well-deserved blame if O'Brien had turned out to be a dud, so he also deserves a little bit of credit when the hire - regardless of the circumstances of the search - turns out to be a successful coach. Lots of athletic directors and search committees who *do* know what they're doing end up making really terrible coaching hires.

See Florida and Nebraska.

The truth infuriates you? Tough luck. That it puzzles you shows you aren't very bright or don't
know anything about football. PSU's record against OSU under Paterno after joining the Big 10
was 6 and 12. They also had a nine game losing streak against Michigan. Most years their
offense was pitiful. Near the end, some of the coaching staff including Paterno didn't even recruit.

Follow what Franklin is doing and you will learn how real coaches operate. When the offense
floundered, he hired the best OC he could find. The coaches when not teaching are recruiting.
PSU has an offensive line coach and DC. Things they lacked in the later years. What kind
of real football program lacks a DC or OL coach? PSU had enough talent to win most
of their OOC twinkie games and beat the likes of Indiana, Purdue Illinois, etc but were no longer
a real national player. The program was a mess and now Franklin is bringing it back to
its rightful place.

Not going to stoop to the level of responding to insults but all I can say is that the record speaks for itself. I agree that Paterno had issues as he got older but whatever the staff was doing was evidently effective as far as the record is concerned. Franklin is a very good coach and I take nothing away from what he's doing. However, just because Franklin does things differently to achieve good results is no reason to tear down what Paterno did. Regardless of who succeeded Paterno, there was never any reason to tear Paterno down. The whole situation could and should have been handled a lot better.

Wasn't it assumed that Joyner leaked it at the time, quite in opposition to Golden's wishes? The top 3 candidates back then were Franklin, Charlie Strong, and Golden. For PSU only, Munchak was also a top consideration. Strong got hired by Texas early on, so were down to Franklin and Golden and Munchak. Munchak was #3 in any event, and Franklin was considered the rising star (maybe after only Strong) at the time. Franklin being the top choice was a no-brainer to anyone paying attention, yet we nearly had Golden, thanks to Joyner. His screw-up there turned into gold for him and PSU. All this from the same Joyner who had basically mis-managed O'Brien to the NFL.

And had O'Brien turned out to be a dud, the criticisms of Joyner would have been more along the lines of the good candidates (assuming the rumors at the time had some merit) he turned off by him being him, rather than for making the wrong choice.

That Joyner gets credit for anything is beyond me. The coaches hated him, the athletic dept. hated him, he alienated the football lettermen, he managed by intimidation, he was a PR disaster with the NLC.... could it be the primary reason the Inquirer is writing about him is because Ira's son is on the Inquirer board?

Not that I'm bitter..... Ha! ;)

Judas needed a job and Ira needed a hand puppet. Joyner was never the decision maker in the athletic dept. Ira wanted control and he had it with Joyner as his mini me. I'm just wondering if visiting a casino will soon be part of PSU's game day experience.

I hear he has a tremendous singing voice.

Another hypocrite.
Do you even understand what the word "Hypocrite" means? Not sure how you can apply it to my comment. I did not line my pockets with PSU money on the way in and out the door so I have no idea what point you are tying to make except to find any reason the defend Joyner.

Apparently you don't. You and your cronies whine about Paterno not getting a fair shake
and are upset that he was convicted in the court of public opinion based on rumor and innuendo.
However, you have no problem smearing Joyner "lined his pockets" based on the same. That makes you a hypocrite. Google the word and learn.

The Inquirer's Frank Fitzpatrick gives Joyner too much oxygen, in my opinion. Joyner not only sold out his coach, he also sold out his program and his university.

But overall - not a cringeworthy article and my blood isn't boiling after reading it, although I am not a sports fan so it might make others angry instead. And this is a somewhat positive statement:

"Ironically, the one thing coaches and administrators pointed to most often when discussing reasons for this sports miracle was the foundation created by Joe Paterno, the man some critics still blame for creating a football-first environment in which Sandusky’s crimes were ignored or missed, (<---WRONG) the man whose legacy administrators have sometimes seemed hell-bent on erasing." (my emphasis added)

It would be nice, however, if these asshats in the media actually brought up Second Mile leadership and their Best Practice of wearing swim trunks. But that's a rant for another day.

A refresher on Joyner from another BWI poster in his Feckless Series

Yesterdays news. Thats all Joyner is now.
