He was part of the program that CNBC did on lying. He said that he quickly learned that to get ahead (choice games) that he needed to favor the best players. Then he started helping a buddy by telling him which refs were more favorable to big name teams/players than others. This turned out (no surprise) to be a good indicator on who would win games or cover. Then, the guys with crooked noses got wind and it escalated the stakes. I think in the end that is all he ever did, was tell them which refs were going to favor certain teams and not throw games intentionally. I could be wrong, however, because I didn't follow the trial or read the book.
His book- Personal Foul, is a great read. In addition to his sad downfall, he does share the tendencies and grudges that refs have and how they affect the game.
