Flo's article on Hodge contenders got me thinking (as did Andegre's rankings, which have Zain at #2 behind Sorenson even though they are supposed to reward dominant wrestlers). I've been comparing Zain to the wrong Hawkeye. His sophomore year has been more like Metcalf's Hodge-winning sophomore year than Sorenson's sophomore year. In fact, Sorenson's sophomore year has been very much like Zain's true freshman year.
Freshman Zain vs. Sophomore Sorenson
~ Zain through 19 matches was 19-0 with three pins, two techs & five majors. He had bonus points in 52 percent of his matches. His dominance score (using the NCAA formula) was 3.95.
~ Sorenson through 19 matches is 19-0 with two pins, three techs & five majors. He has bonus points in 52 percent of his matches. His dominance score is 3.89.
Sophomore Zain vs. Sophomore Metcalf
~ Zain through 21 matches is 21-0 with nine pins, six techs & four majors. He has bonus points in 90 percent of his matches. His dominance score is 5.05.
~ Metcalf through 21 matches was 20-1 with six pins, three techs & six majors. He had bonus points in 71.4 percent of his matches. His dominance score was 4.29.
(By the way, these numbers include competition against non-D1 wrestlers, which is a slight advantage for the Iowa guys. Zain had no non-D1 matches his freshman year and only one this year. Sorenson has three this year; Metcalf had five through the first 21 matchs of his sophomore year.)
