On the thread about DT winning Olympic Gold, a poster mentioned they see DT taking over for Cael in 10-15 teams ... Brantt (notoriously plugged in insider, I think it's possible that he knows Cael personally even) responded with "Way less than that"

Alright - bringing it back ahaha. I do think it's interesting. Cael strikes me as the kind of coach who wants to be equals with his wrestlers as a coach.
I could see Cael hanging it up in 5 to 10 years. My hope is that when he does him and his family stay in State College and he takes and even bigger role in the NLWC and turning out Olympic and World Champs.

Serious question: what has Brantt been right about ever, that we should believe him at all?

His name comes up as a plugged in insider on the front end up rumors, and pretty much never on the rubber meets the road end of rumors.

All I can is Cael is the best college wrestling coach in USA and can coach here as long as he wants to and when he someday retires (hopefully not for many years) he retires from PSU! It is hard to imagine a coach transforming a program like he did. I saw the team wrestle at Cornell the year before Cael came and except for Frank Molinaro and possibly one other wrestler the team was not sharp and was quite unimpressive. The rest is history!

I feel most of the stuff he shares has smoke to it and it just doesn't come to fruition. If you're talking about the Kerkvliet 2020 waiver and Evan Wick transferring here. This might be another case of that.

Granted this is something that even if true is still years from being away, obviously Cael is still at his peak as a coach right now.

Thank you. No offense, but if folks think they know what Cael is going to do, outside of his family, they're fos.

I originally edited it out the thing and changed the title to Mods Please Delete. Think that might have been the right move if you don't mind. Sorry for posting in the first place.

What do you want deleted? It's fine. No biggie.

The thread would be good. You're 100% right, nobody knows and even if it's true, there's obviously a good chance that circumstances could change (as is often the case with something Brantt shares lol) and finally, it's still years down the line at the earliest and pointless to discuss now. Thanks!

I definitely could see Cael focusing on the NLWC and RTC in five years. The five medals from people training with the club is incredible and will only put them in greater demand. It doesn’t happen by chance. Every year their performance gets better on the national and international scene. He needs to start a women’s program to round out his reach. More to come.

Only job I see him taking is a top job with USA Wrestling and how well that private/public relationship is working right now I don’t see him wanting to fix something. I think he’s going to continue to build it outside in through NLWC. I also think Casey and Cody would have something to say about that top job if he ever left. David is going to have a top youth private training facility that should be able to support his family handsomely for years to come. He might have to take a paycut to give something like that up.

Spyker is a bit like Sasquatch. The legend continues to grow….but has there ever been a confirmed Spyker sighting 😄

I found a swatch of what was presumed to be Spyker hair caught on the corner of the mat 'in the room'. We sent it off for DNA analysis and it came back inhuman. The rumor is still alive that it indeed was Spyker, confirming he was in the room.

The way Goodale likes to lurk outside Lorenzo recruiting Cael's kids and then considering Spyker always seemed to overhear the coaches speaking while hanging around Lorenzo I just assumed Slyker and Goodale where one and the same.

Has anybody ever seen Spyker and Goodale together?

Okay - this thread won't be for naught. I'm down to make it a totally chaotic offseason thread again. Those are fun.
McScoreley, I think it is a very good thread but two months premature.

I just envision Cael getting off of the plane from Japan and reading the post and thinking damn I just had the most successful group of Olympic wrestler assembled and they're thinking about my replacement? What happened to my parade?

⏳😉

Goodale hired Spyker to finish that fence around Jersey.

Cael just turned 42 years old.

Why are people so eager to retire him ASAP with the "ya know, DT can take over" brainstorms?

________________________________

Cael became an assistant coach at ISU at age 24-25,
Became Iowa State HC at age 27.
Cael was named Penn State HC at age 31.

To compare, DT will turn 31 in December and has a blank space under "college coaching experience".

Yeah, I don't get it. Where are these "I could see it" opinions come from to speculate like this? Are these the same people that said Spencer Lee is spurning Iowa to come to Penn State to wrestle his last year? Or are they just like to gossip just to start something?

Just wait until it's time for Cael's next contract extension.

Normally, dreaming of a replacement happens because the grass seems greener on the other side. But with Cael, we can’t realistically get any greener! #tiredofwinning?

FWIW, Dan Gable retired at age 49.

Wrestling is one of the few sports where the Coach actually works out with the team members. At a certain age or physical condition, the Coach is not able to do that, or is limited. So early retirement is not out of the question.

You know, I noticed a 23-yo kid who is very good with the GIFs. I wonder if he’d like to come on board when we ship Bordeaux off to the glue factory next year. FWIW, I heard the kid has a young friend who falls outta trees real good … :)

Cael is absolutely hands on and I have often wondered at what age he would feel limited in his ability in this area.

We have heard rumors that he is still unbeatable and toys with our best Anthony, Bo, Aaron, Kirk ... especially in neutral.

I don't know that he has to continue to be better than our best big men to coach effectively. I say he has 5 more years where he can show them positions in real time wrestling, and get the better of them. Probably at least 5 maybe 10 more after that to roll around on the mat effectively, with speed, strength and sweat.

I do think if Cael were physically unable to coach on the mat he would move on.

I say he stays until the tug of being our world team coach becomes too strong. Heck half that team will be his boys anyway.

My guess is 5-7 more years. I would be happy with him staying well into his 80's sporting a cane though.
