Interesting Tidbit on 247

FWIW, Dan Gable retired at age 49.

Wrestling is one of the few sports where the Coach actually works out with the team members. At a certain age or physical condition, the Coach is not able to do that, or is limited. So early retirement is not out of the question.
I believe Gable had health issues. He was on crutches and not able to walk.

John Smith just turned 56 and still strong as an ox! Room wrestling isn't full out wrestling. Obviously when people say Cael beats them in the room, they're talking about a 15 second scramble to learn a position rather than a full 6 minute match. In that scenario, who is going to out maneuver Cael? Who probably knows what's going to happen well before it happens.

I think most are aware Cael cannot go the distance at his age against DT anymore for real (though DT always says Cael still is the best) Working through one position obviously is different and I suspect Cael could do that for 15 more years at least.

Yeah, I don't get it. Where are these "I could see it" opinions come from to speculate like this? Are these the same people that said Spencer Lee is spurning Iowa to come to Penn State to wrestle his last year? Or are they just like to gossip just to start something?
Wait, Spencer isn’t coming?

That is why I scratch my head over talk that has gone on for years on when Cael leaves his coaching shoes on the mat.

Then we have discussions as to Spencer leaving Wrestling competition to coach, due to his injury history.

Coaches wrestle. Spencer's body at this point has more miles on it than Cael's in my opinion.

Long live the Iowa wrestler and Coach Cael.

It was 2017 but I couldn't find the length of the contract. I was hoping someone would have the scoop.

Willie, how long does Cael have you under contract? I can figure it out from there.
Lmao. Didnt catch it at first but I see what you did there. Ha

Just wait until it's time for Cael's next contract extension.
Guessing 5-10 years is only a haphazard guessing. This board has been speculating for years that Cael will try to surpass Gable's 15 titles, which I think is a good timeline. That's at least 7 more title years away to tie and 8 to surpass it. Is he going to win 8 straight titles starting this year? It would make more sense if the guess is 8-10 years for Cael to move on. But 5?!

Interestingly, the contract details were never mentioned in any of the articles in 2017, and in those articles Sandy Barbour was quoted as saying she wouldn't be releasing those details because the school was not obligated to do so.

Cael is 42, the Brands brothers are 53 and John Smith is 55 and I don't see anyone expecting any of them to retire any time soon. No idea what Cael's plans are but I could easily see him going another 20 years.

Wait -- you mean Iowa Head Coach Spencer Lee isn't imminent?

Man, at 46 I literally gained 2% body fat over night. Now @50 -I get hurt sleeping.
2 years ago I tore my tricep off fighting a heroine addict that attacked me with a broken bottle. Luckily he was 165 & high as a kite and being 250+ with wrestling & MMA background he “tapped” quickly.
But there’s NO WAY in hell I could roll with those kids anymore. Would LOVE to see Cael pass Gables record though!!!

Dont know about you but at 43 if I wake up on the couch my lower back hurts....

Edit: I type this sitting in my hot tub w cigar and captain/dew bitching about my day. Which inevitably will lead to sleeping again on the couch.

Same here. And I'm 45.

What kind of cigar are you smoking?

Acids...I'm a new age smoker I'm told.
I like Acids. Ever try Havana Honeys? They're pretty good too and along those same lines. I had a Tabak Especial by recommendation of a shop owner in Wilmington, NC. Those were good also.

If you are ever looking to branch out into the unsweet cigars, Cohibas are excellent. You don't need the $25 cigar for a good one either. I always buy the $10 ones.

Here's a question just for shits and giggles. DT had a great college career like Cael. He now has a gold medal. He has a club full of future stars. If DT took a coaching job at let's say Iowa State how long would it take for him to reach Cael like results I mean he has what it takes and I'm assuming kids would want to wrestle for DT just like they do with Cael. Not something I'm hoping for just a thought to spark discussion.

Ok, time to toot my own horn a little. When I was in WA, I was still getting on the mat and going reasonably hard with our HS guys up until I was 62. I had to start toning it down after that. I was starting to get concerned about getting a serious injury. I also knew guys who were still competing in the 60+ age bracket. They were the real diehards.

That is impressive! It would be only slightly less impressive if you only worked with 106 pounders. :)

I coached youth wrestling a long time and didn't roll with the kids. But my alumni would often come back to practice with us. One night a kid from a local private school came to practice and said, "Hey, coach, let's wrestle". He was bigger than me. I lasted about a minute. I was unhappy. The next morning I was at a doctor's office at 9AM. I would have gone earlier but it took me an hour to lift my head off of my pillow. That was a lesson well learned.

Yup - details weren't released, not even years. If we were wise, we just gave him a lifetime one. Willie mentioned Cael wasn't getting paid for parts of 2017 during negotiations (just not under contract). His key priority was making sure Casey Cunningham would be paid like a HC basically.

Man, I just got done reading that. It was a fascinating journey, all in the span of a few hours. Some of those comments/takes aged so so poorly.

“Whatever, I hope Penn State enjoys watching wrestlers hold on for deal life and win/lose on riding time”

“Penn State is NOT committed to WRESTLING like we are here in the Midwest.”

“While I appreciate Cael, IMO, He needs ISU as bad as we need him. IF he went to PSU and a decent Coach came here...... We'll beat his a$$ because ultimately its ingrained in our everyday lives.”

"Prediction. Cael and PSU get no national titles in the next 10 years. If anything, Brands and Iowa just one the lottery on this deal. I know some think that PSU is a sleeping giant but Iowa is a giant and has A LOT of momentum. I thought Cael at ISU could be their foil but at Penn State...I just don't see it no matter how much money, facilities, and high school athletes they think they have."

I remember when Cael was hired the Williamsport Nittany Lion booster club had him there as a guest speaker.
Someone asked Cael why he came to PSU to coach from Iowa St? Cael smiled and pulled out his wallet, it got a good laugh. Cael went on to say how PA was a hotbed for recruiting and how great the high school wrestling and quality of coaching was in PA. He emphasized that he was here to win National Championships at PSU.
Promises made and promises kept on that last statement. Cael can stay as long as he wants!

Sounds like Dunke is just getting his feet wet. Acids are great to start out with, but often lead many down the never ending rabbit hole and into a new hobby. My advice is to try as many brands and sizes as possible, listening to recommendations such as the one above as many experienced smokers know what they're talking about. But if you afford to get into trying Cubans, I highly recommend it, as in my 20 years of smoking, nothing beats the flavor of a good Cuban. Price, and sometimes consistency, are the only downfalls. But in my opinion Cuban flavors are better than Dominican and Nicaraguan.

I've thought about getting into shape and wrestle in some old timers tourneys but then start thinking how much I'd look like John Dupont in a wrestling singlet. I mow the f*** out of my lawn instead.

Cael is absolutely hands on and I have often wondered at what age he would feel limited in his ability in this area.

We have heard rumors that he is still unbeatable and toys with our best Anthony, Bo, Aaron, Kirk ... especially in neutral.

I don't know that he has to continue to be better than our best big men to coach effectively. I say he has 5 more years where he can show them positions in real time wrestling, and get the better of them. Probably at least 5 maybe 10 more after that to roll around on the mat effectively, with speed, strength and sweat.

I do think if Cael were physically unable to coach on the mat he would move on.

I say he stays until the tug of being our world team coach becomes too strong. Heck half that team will be his boys anyway.

My guess is 5-7 more years. I would be happy with him staying well into his 80's sporting a cane though.
Can you not coach if you are unable to live wrestle? I think he would still be an effective coach at a later age and having some younger assistants do the heavy lifting.

I love a good quality cigar. I haven't had a Cuban YET. I'll spring for one some day. I'm all ears for suggestions as to what to try. Alec Bradleys are another cigar I enjoy.

I get pretty overwhelmed in my local cigar shop. I hate being disappointed with my selections.

Now this Brantt person is suggesting a big transfer in the works but too much competition from other programs and it might not happen and yadda yadda yadda.

Reminds me of a "Hey, look at me, but, I can't tell you anything"
