I make this post in no way making light of the coronavirus. I for one can’t help but think the cancellation of the post season only helps Iowa fandom. The way things were trending I had full confidence Cael was going to roll up 7 strong and have the guys peaking while Iowa was showing chinks in the armor. This way Iowa can say they are the regular season team champions so they should also get the team title, while the flo guys back them up. But I get the feeling Cael and the team weren’t going to follow the script if the show had gone on, and it would have been another team title in Happy Valley. Be safe!

...yes, I can jes see the NCAA awarding National Championships in sports this year to teams who never won them....not!....
...if they didn’t do anything in WWII why do it now?...
Because the generation of WWII believed you get what you earn. We’re now in the era of everybody gets a trophy run by soccer moms who don’t want their kids left out...whether they earned it or not.

and for the record, my kid played soccer and I love the sport, but neither my wife (a soccer mom) nor I subscribed to the everyone should get a trophy philosophy. All it does is lower kids’ standards.

The way I see it, wrestling is like boxing. In boxing, the champ is still the champ until someone else takes away his title by beating him in the ring. Same goes for wrestling.

Penn State was the defending NCAA champion going into this season. Nobody has taken away that title so we are STILL the defending NCAA champions, pure and simple.

The Brands agree with the WWII generation. And while I think Iowa was certainly the prohibitive favorite, neither Tom nor Terry would feel complete with some trophy that wasn’t earned.

While I agree that Iowa did not win the championship, they certainly were 95% or better to do so. The Trackwrestling simulated tournament had five Penn State wrestlers making the finals and Shakur taking fifth. Even if the five had all won their finals matches Iowa would still come out on top in the simulation. The vast majority of Iowa fans are good people and great wrestling fans. I feel bad that they lost the opportunity to celebrate this year's team to the fullest extent.

So we would've needed 7 scoring wrestlers?

Iowa fans can talk all they want and no doubt some believe their team is the 2020 champs.

They aren’t . There isn’t a 2020 team champ. There isn’t even a dual champ for that matter.

They don’t have a trophy and never will. You have to actually wrestle the matches to determine a champ.

They can’t use “you get what you earn” only when it’s convenient

Agreed. And our streak IS broken -- because we didn't win it this year either.

We just finished 4th at BIGs while Iowa ran away with the team title so I;m not seeing thses chinks you talk about. I don;t see any path where we would have won the NCAA team title this season. We qualified 7 but I doubt Verk would have placed and Rasheed probably wouldn't even have wrestled. The remaining five would all finish top 4 but that would not be close to winning even if Iowa completely s**t the bed.

They did not win the championship, but given the Big Ten tournament result, they were imo the overwhelming favorite to have won. Plain and simple.
I agree with the view that they had a pretty decent chance to have had 10 all- Americans. That’s quite something.

Fate, woulda , coulda. shoulda... we will never know, but for sure nothing was earned

Iowa was the favorite for sure but you have to wrestle the matches to know.

Cael even publicly said the team is not in peak shape for Big 10s, but nationals is his focus, so even the big 10 results are subject to debate if you want to parlay them forward. Reference several past years.

We came in with 3 AA+ 6th year seniors and excited with one, and that wrestler one weight up from the plan.

We lost two starters to freestyle injuries in a year where Oly freestyle will probably cancel like everything else.

Had we had Berge, Shak and Cassar heatly we still go undefeated in duals including vs Iowa. So much for Iowa dominace.

No time to look back. Iowa comes in loaded next year adding Eireman, and we lose three national champs including Cassar, but we have some fresh new studs on the way. I like our chances ...a LOT

Be interested in why you think that because I don't see Glory beating Spencer any time soon.
No one saw the possibility of Rivera beating him last year, much less beating him twice, but it happened. And Glory is better then Rivera. He gave Lee one of his toughest matches last year when he was a freshman and he doesn't fade in the third period like Lee is prone to do. Lee is a great talent but obviously not unbeatable.

I don;t see any evidence that Glory is better than Rivera. They wrestled once last year and Rivera beat him handily as did Lee. At last years NCAAs Lee was 1st, Rivera 3rd and Glory 6th. The only evidence you seem to have is your opinion, which is fine, but it is just opinion, not fact like you are trying to state it.

Beating Lee is a tall order, he will most like be a 4x, scratch that, 3xer. That said Glory is not the same kid he was as a freshman, comparing to last year is not fair. Look at the jumps Paris, RBY and other freshman make after that first taste of NCAA level competition.

I honestly feel it will bother Hawk fans more that they cant call Spencer a 4 timer if he isnt able to get a year back.

As a hawk fan this one stings. I’ve gotten to know him a bit over the past three years. Everyone sees he’s an incredible talent on the mat, but he’s a better person. Robbing him of his chance to be a four timer sucks. Plain and simple. I for one can be a bit greedy...I wanted banner 24 and Spencer Lee three for three. I think most hawk fans thought there was a better than good chance of both those things happening.

And Lee didn;t improve? Once again I see no evidence that Glory would definitely beat Lee this year and next, which is what midnightride implied. Could Glory beat him, sure as upsets happen all the time, but saying it as a certainty is complete BS IMHO.

Sucks for all the winter sports (men's and women's basketball, men's and women's hockey, rifle, bowling (women), fencing, gymnastics, skiing, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, and wrestling).

There is no such thing as an imaginary title, so each of the sports will do without for a year. When I was thinking about this, one of the quotes used to inspire others came to mind (see below). Some wrestlers have known the "high achievement" mentioned in the quote, others could have this year.

I feel for everyone that missed out on a chance to see Mark Hall and Vincenzo Joseph go for four finalist appearances (and each another title), Spencer Lee go for title #3, true freshman Aaron Brooks give his all under the bright lights, none undefeateds try to stay that way, and the dozens of other side stories that happen during the Wrestling Championship. We'll miss the likely Cenzo vs Marinelli III bout and Hall vs Kemerer III, both knotted at one-apiece, settle once and for all the Lee vs Glory drama, among many other.

But at the end of the day, I feel more for the wrestlers than anyone else, regardless of team. All they wanted to do was compete, every one of them.

I didn't realize that you wanted an argument when I entered the discussion but since you seem determined to make it so.... Maybe you should reread my opining statement that started off with "I don't think". If you choose to make that into my stating fact then you have real problem and can spew whatever you like. I expressed an opinion that you obviously have a problem with, but it is your problem.

No problem. I just disagreed with your opinion. Apparently you don;t think I have the right to do that so I guess you didn;t really want a disscusion just everyone to agree with your opinion. Sorry if that offended you. I will now end this non discussion.

Agree,I don't see Lee getting beat again in college. My only point was a frosh Glory doesn't mean much in terms of where he is today.

True, sure would sting, only one thing would be worse and that would have been had he been a senior this year and actually have been going for #4.

The Championship was won at the Big Tens this year. Having 23 National titles in your back pocket doesn't hurt either. It sucks reading people disparaging Iowa and their season acting like it never even happened. What a shitty time to live in right now. Thank God I have a beautiful wife and son to spend quality time with!

The "never happened" banter now, will never balance the scales of whining your fan base will bring upon the internet and beer halls regarding the "lost year".

This happened on HR after NCAAs the last 9 seasons. You should be used to it.

Wow, MVPFAN has 3,015 posts and only 5 likes?!? That has to be some masterclass trolling, not that I am familiar with his posts. He has to be the anti- Mr Johnbrooks!
