Iowa news - 2024-25

@smalls103 ….but they made their name in wrestling giving in-state guys extra scholarship money calculated on out of state tuition costs and they were sanctioned by the NCAA for it..
Actually if I am not mistaken, they did something even worse.

It's been a while since I read about the method but I believe they 'calculated their available scholarship or of money because upon an assumption that all scholarships were out of state, so if in state tuition was $10,000 and out of state was $20,000 and they had 10 scholys max, they managed to a $200,000 budget. Thus if they ended up with 5 in-state kids getting scholys, they still had $150,000 to play with. The net result was they handed out more than 10 scholys max allowed.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but some of those great teams had too many kids on scholarship as a result. The NCAA took action that penalized then moving forward for a period, but did not retroactively go back and correct the wrong through stripping them of any wins or championships.

I think there's something to be said for the "old" Iowa under Gable vs the "new" Iowa under TnT. Disregarding any of the controversy over scholarship money, Gable's teams were better, pure and simple. It would be different if the "new" Iowa was in really close competition with Penn State every year for the national title. But that's not the case, the "new" Iowa is no match for Penn State. On top of that, they aren't even guaranteed to be the second best team.

I think if it was possible for the current Penn State program under Sanderson to be competing against the "old" Iowa teams under Gable, we would have some really exciting competitions that could go right down to the wire. But I don't see that happening with a team that is now forced to go out and hire mercenaries just to try to stay competitive. It's possible that in a few years we will see Ok State get to the point where they are giving us some serious and exciting competition. I just don't see it happening under TnT.
