Is Auburn @ home a “defining game” in measuring CJF’s legitimacy as a premier head coach?

I do know it might be the most important game of the year (as I've mentioned before). Had we also lost to wisky, this game would be an absolute must, but by winning wisky our rep remains solid no matter how this one plays out.

Here is the thing. Franklin is doing a good job of going south to nab SEC players and he has a bucket load who were down to psu and auburn (perhaps others, but these 2 were heavy in the mix). Winning sends a clear message to all the kids that coming north to play here is a solid move that can lead to bigger things.

A close loss probably isn't too bad but anything else likely opens the door for kids to re-think their decision. Had we beaten kentucky a couple years back this might not be so important, but if we're going to coax sec types to play in the north we're going to need to show we are every bit as good as the sec teams.

That opportunity lies in wait saturday evening... we better be ready and better grab this one by the neck and bring it home.

in my opinion.

I’m much more confident that Penn State wins this game than I was for the Wisky game. I know that means a lot for the team’s chances. But I will be shocked if Penn State loses this game.

Fanboys can debate and define anything.....James Franklin cashes a check (bi monthly or monthly) that validates his status as a premier college football coach. Furthermore, should he choose to leave PSU, similar proof or validation (perhaps even greater) will be offered to him elsewhere.

Yes because all student athletes make the biggest decision of their lives based on one game. “I visited schools, I talked to coaches, I watched games and after all that research I decided Penn State was a perfect fit for me, but then they lost to Kentucky so I’m going somewhere else.” Yeah, right.

Will you be as shocked as Wisconsin and Ohio State fans the past 2 weeks? Upsets on the road do happen. Auburn's overall talent matches up very closely to PSU's roster. If we are -2 in the turnover margin, we will lose. On the other hand, if we are +2 in TO margin, we will win. So, which team puts the ball on the turf and/or throws the pick?

I agree, defensive struggle. Turnovers the difference. Take the under.

The Wisky game was bigger and more important than this upcoming matchup with Auburn.
Yes and no. Does this game impact us in B1G standings - no. Does it impact national perception - IMO, yes even more than Wisky game. In terms of getting into CFP - any loss hurts, especially if we lose and Auburn gets trounced in SEC play.

Just win bay bay!

There is no such thing as a defining win. Except the National Championship game. Beating the #20 team at home in the 3d week of the season? Really?

In my opinion, the only significance this game has is national perception. Penn State is widely seen as a top 3 team in the Big Ten this season, while Auburn is seen as a middle of the pack SEC team this season. Penn State should win this game based on talent and coaching, but Auburn does have a chance to win and that would rattle people's opinion of Penn State on a national scale.

🤷‍♂️
CJF has won several big games the most recent being @ Wisconsin who was higher ranked.

I think CJF has been an A- head coach if you throw out last season. Taking a program in trouble, he was blessed with having #26 and some other good players and has parlayed that into an upper-middle-class program that is NOT elite. We have one B1G and zero playoff games.

He is great for the kids, great for the program and a fantastic ambassador for the University.

The program needs to continue to improve and this is just one of many stepping stones. It is important, it is not imperative. PSU can accomplish everything we set out to accomplish this season if we lose this game. This is a big year. Do we continue to improve or stagnate?

Well said!

is there a difference between premier HC and elite HC? He is definitely premier, but not elite.

So if he wins this, are you going to stop talking trash about him?
Or will it just keep going and going?

No? He’s proven that already. Really hope we don’t lose him, best coach penn state has ever had, and anyone we can get to replace him is going to be a huge step down

I didn’t realize posting a question represented talking trash.

Maybe trash was a bit much, but, for years, every time after a loss, or if a coach you like becomes available, you are saying to fire Franklin and hire, whoever it is you want at the time. Usually Matt Ruhle.

One game doesn’t define a coach. CJF has already had a signature win against tOSU in 2016. I would say that he’s cemented himself as a top ten coach and Penn State as a top ten program. Beating Auburn this Saturday will help our playoff chances this season and help support the big ten being equal to the SEC, but it wouldn’t be a signature win not a loss that gets him on the hot seat.

No. If they lose to Auburn in a bad way i think it will be enough for some or enough for others to reconsider making the decision in the first place. More than happy to be proved wrong.. more to the point, much happier we just win and not have any potential issues in the first place.

I think only fans put so much emphasis on any one game in terms of the impact on recruiting.
