You know Cael didn't say kerkvliet was ineligible , just that he is on Olympic red shirt.
If this is true then my guess is that taking an Olympic redshirt is the loophole to avoid having to take the NLI penalty and having to lose a year of eligibility. So he either takes the Olympic redshirt and gets 4 years of eligibility or doesn’t and can’t wrestle til next year and loses a year. So the Olympic redshirt is a no brainer.
It's not a requirement, but it enables the athlete to withdraw from classes for a year without impacting his eligibility ot the school's graduation rate metrics.
If the athlete does the 1-yr withdrawal, then his scholarship can be reallocated for that year.

While I understand he's not going this season, I'm somewhat surprised that no one here seems to know definitively whether or not he is even eligible to go this year.
I think jefe explained it the best. He is OR this year. If he doesn't OR then he loses a year because he didn't fulfil his NLI and he has to sit out a year. I agree I don't think he goes at all this year because he isn't eligible I don't see how he could be eligible for any reason actually.
I think he wanted to be in the lineup THIS year at TOSU, then use his ORS as a senior, with Gwiz prolly out of contention in 2024, it would be a 2 horse race.
