Is the narrative that Franklin fixed Penn State's culture? (Kent State broadcast)

To you and those of your ilk he was. Your worship of him made him believe it, so he stayed way beyond his time. Currently when people hear PSU they still think of Paterno but not in a good way. He built up PSU football and then almost destroyed it. There was a poster named Marsh Creek Eagle who advocated getting rid of Joe long before his demise. I was in his camp until people like you ran him off. Joe's legacy is now "Know when to quit.".

PSU scandal? He had as much to do with it as you. He was told by an employee that he saw something. That employee says he "watered down" the story. Joe, as is NCAA policy today, reported it to the AD and the guy in charge of police. He also followed up with the witness to make sure everything was ok on "a number of occasions" according to the witness.

Franklin did not fix Penn State's culture. It did not need to be fixed. The players, O'Brien, and Franklin led the program back where it belongs through their conduct and on-field performance, but the culture has never strayed. erickson, the bot, freeh, corbett and his minions, and the media all tried to destroy the program through a false narrative, but they failed.

Completely agree on MCE. I started on TOS around 2003 and MCE was the biggest JVP advocate there was until Pat Devlin de-committed from Miami to attend PSU. I was also excited to watch PD play, but many were upset when DC won the starting spot and MCE in particular went off the deep end. He was also smarter than everyone on the coaching staff and the board ... just ask him.

As for Osprey, based on my choice of user names (picked in 2003) I clearly am a fan of JVP, but I would never say I worshiped him. Even I will readily admit he hung around too long and wish he retired during the "dark ages". But to say he "almost destroyed it" is completely false. JS, the OGBOT in their mishandling, the OAG, Corbutt and the media/public outrage is what almost destroyed Penn State football. I don't think it could have played out any better with BOB as the transition guy keeping it afloat and CJF (hopefully) the long term solution to regain national prominence.
Agree....and Clark ended up as a two time first team B1G QB and the B1G's "MVP" in 2009.

Joe did exactly as he was supposed to do, and as we have learned through legitimate scandals on other college campuses, a lot more than others in his position.

They mentioned him taking the names off the jerseys as the springboard for that.

If he really wants to make the older alums happy - have the kids be cleanshaven or appropriately shaved, and have them wear suits on the road for road games.

Now get off my lawn!
We happened to be up by the baseball stadium just as the team came off the bus this past weekend. As an older alum, I was noticing the difference. Followed by the thought--that was then, this is now. If they play with integrity and go to class, I'm good with that. Would like a little less showboating--but again, it's a different time.

Most people consider it a problem when the AD and School President take orders from the Football Coach.
I know those of you that post here have a different opinion.

Name an example. A verifiable one. The supposed kitchen table meeting has not been verified.

I can name a couple where he didn't get what he wanted. Joe didn't want the baseball stadium where it was. He didn't want the BTN. He told the admins not to give Second Mile kids access to facilities. He lost on all three. The last one turned out to be just a bit important (mind you, he was wrong on the first two).

I look at it as Joe created a foundation and Franklin's been able to build on that foundation using the same ideals that Joe started this whole thing with. Old school values along with new school football. Focus on family, going to class and the community which cultivates good character but play 2018 style football which adds the new school component.

I thought he also didn’t want Sandusky to have access and lost that....and I believe he didn’t want Portland fired and we saw what happened there. Not very powerful for the most powerful man in the state.

Brando talked about PSU football dominance in the east from the 70's on...never once mentioned JVP's name. The guy is a schmuck...

I'll add that PSU was headed towards a top 5 recruiting class before the JS crap hit the fan and players decommitted.

I also think PSU would have had an excellent chance to win the BiG in 2012. They finished 6-2 after losing Redd, Fortt, Brown, Fera, etc. to Freeh agency. Those were quality players and I think they beat OSU and NEB with those guys. The cupboard was far from bare.

Joe definitely stayed too long but his knowledge and reputation were enough to keep PSU competitive.

I don't believe anybody at PSU knowingly enabled a pedophile. I also don't believe MSU administrators knowingly allowed Nasser to molest athletes. I don't even think Meyer is OK with his coaches beating up their wives.

I DO believe that a lot of people screwed up and went into cya mode after the crap hit the fan. Lots of dishonesty and finger pointing. Joe was one of the few not to do that.

Just for what it's worth, Brando was pretty bad. Got player's names wrong, missed a bunch of on the field calls, just said a bunch of dumb unprepared things. Gave Tyler Shoop credit for Kuntz's catch, that sort of sloppiness was happening the whole game.

There was a play early in in the game where McSorley changed the cadence to draw Kent defender offside (which was definitely a response to what Kent had done to Windsor), and both Brando and Tillman missed the play and thought McGovern had jumped when McGovern was clearly doing what he was supposed to do in coming out of his stance to force the flag on the defender. And given they were at the goalline, this was actually a really good time for McSorley to do that.

Anyway Fox showed the replay and Brando and Tillman STILL didn't get it (and the producers didn't tell them). One of them remarked that the defender hadn't made contact with the O-linemen (which is a rule that changed years ago, so they should be up on that).

Anyway I've seen worse broadcasting, but you can see why Brando and Tillman do the C grade Fox games.

Yeah, and Tillman made a big deal calling it a big break for Penn State. It went from 3rd & 2 from Kent's 3 to 3rd and 1 from Kent's 2. Pretty much the turning point of the game.

I'm still not 100% sure about that second one in a couple of cases (mind you, I think a lot of folks thought that "he's a doctor, so it must be ok")--but by and large I agree with you.

He was wrong on the baseball stadium? Do we have a baseball team? That's valuable parking.
