It's now a trend: Five-star WR Evan Stewart foregoing rest of senior year

Not that anyone thought it would. Is he somehow already getting NIL dollars from one or more of these schools?

So he is abandoning his teammates in the middle of the season - if he is not injured, this would give me pause if I were a college coach recruiting him.

From the article:

““I have enjoyed playing the game of football for a very long time and I will never lose the love and energy rush of taking the field with my guys and teammates.”

Very long time. He’s 17 or 18.

Will never lose the love or energy rush, even though he chose to lose both early. I’m sure it was a really difficult decision.

I hate our world.

I understand these thoughts, but things like this don't really matter any more. Does anyone in the NFL care that Bosa did the same thing in his last year of college (I know he was injured, but possibly could have come back late in the season)? Does anyone in the NFL care that Parsons didn't play last year? As long as they perform, the answer is no. If this guy goes to Bama and tears it up, no one will care, except maybe some of his former HS teammates. That's the reality we are in.

He has already announced that he is forgoing his three years of college to prepare for the NFL, which he will also skip to retire young enough “while he can still get around and doesn’t have any major health issues” and is preparing his speech for Canton.

The next trend that is going to play out will be kids not committing early and waiting for the NIL bids to come in for their services. There will be agents representing high school kids, steering them to the highest bidder.

right...and why not? The schools can't do it directly but a local car dealership (as soon as chips are available) certainly can.

The real test of these guys will be how they make out in college. We haven't seen the results yet. If results are very positive, I will then agree it is a trend. Until then, we will see.

well, it is not unlike the NBA's direct to pro without going to college program. There will be some fits and starts. There will be some successes and failures. In the end, we'll see some kind of programs put together.

By the way, and very much related, there is a case going through the court system where players are claiming that they should be covered by Employment Law. If it is successful, will open the door to unionization. Once there is a college player union, a collective bargaining agreement can be developed. In that CBA, we may see limitations on kids entering college from high school just as the NFL CBA keeps kids from entering the NFL before they are old enough to do so. That will probably be the "end game" to this. The CBA will run for X number of years and be renegotiated every so many years.

NCAA MOTION DENIED AS ATHLETES’ CASE SEEKS EMPLOYEE STATUS

well, that is no joke!

Evan Stewart is from Texas, where holding back kids in school for athletic purposes is not unusual. Makes one wonder if he is a year older than most of his classmates?

They should just let the nfl draft players out of high school or earlier. I’d rather have amateur student athletes than professional college athletes.
I suspect the NFL would not be in favor of this; they don't want to establish farm teams for kids under 20 when they already have big-time college football programs which will help them develop.

So you are 100% in favor of NIL and kids leaving HS early? Based on your previous posts, it doesn't seem like it.
Yes, I am. it doesn't make me happy but who am I? Just some guy that may find some minor inconvenience on select Saturday afternoons. In the meantime, some 18 year old kid is making money off of old farts that are trying to exploit his NIL instead of the university.

its a process...it will work out...I won't be injured or my ability to provide for my family impinged.

These kids are just greedy. But hey, greed is good right?
I don't know how many are really going to get this treatment. Maybe 5 or 10 max each year? Maybe the big schools do this for their stud QB or skill position guy. We supposedly have a 5 star interior lineman in next year's class, I doubt McLanahan's is rushing to throw his face up around the store over a starting running back. Reminds me a bit of the NFL draft; opportunities for the first round skill guys, everyone else can get to work.

Agreed...this is going to end with college kids unionized and after a Collective Bargaining Agreement has been struck between that Union and what we now know as the NCAA

Very interesting observation. But honestly I think that it's just the tip of the iceberg. Just imagine a professor or coach having to deal with a handful of 20 year old athletes who were given mid-six figure signing bonuses while driving in brand new BMW's.

And dealing with those providing the bounty. What do you mean he's not starting? I didn't give him a Beemer to sit!

Mainstreaming bagmen and boosters...what could go wrong?
I stand by my original observation that NLI will lead to a significant decline in CFB. The closer CFB gets to the pros, the less interest there will be. Amateurism has appeal and nobody cares about the minor leagues.
The SEC will survive (I could see a super-league anchored by SEC schools) as they face less competition with the NFL, but CFB overall will see a significant decline.

I am genuinely surprised this has not happened yet. Maybe it has and we just don't know it.
Bingo. College material athletes in Georgia are exploring ways to accelerate their high school academics to get to the money. I would reasonably assume that such an effort will include looking for the highest bidders at the college level. PSU had better get prepared or they will be run over by the top teams.

This NIL acceptance will collapse of its own weight. Not only will boosters make demands on the school and coaches, they will make demands on the players to such an extent that the Boston College point shaving scheme of the 80's will look quaint by comparison. At some point the graft and greed will bring it crashing down.

All the NIL money, cars, trucks and whatever given to the college players will come indirectly from the consumer.
Every thing you see on TV is paid for by the consumer.

it is! hey, while it may ruin my Saturday afternoon, some poor kid is making money. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
If it truly ruins your Saturday afternoons, this entire thing could kill the golden goose and take college sports in its current form with it. Therefore, NIL won't matter.

ahh...life finds a way. if it isn't college, it will be a minor league of some type. Too much money to be had. I really believe the players will unionize and we'll have a CBA within five years.

I've been warning of this for at least ten years after I attending a sports symposium at Harvard. I came back warning about the O'Bannon lawsuit and CTE. People called me names on this board. "It will NEVER happen!" You know the usual suspects. Both predicitons have been spot on.

The big bucks from NIL appear to be sponsorships not direct salary/payments from the school. Unionization and a CBA isn't going to fix that disparity.

I could care less about someone (the NFL) caring or not. It is flat out wrong. It really does matter. Decisions like this should not be okay based on what someone else did. It tells me that he does not want to compete. That he doesn't have that fire. That he will not be there when needed. And, he is really selfish. He has to live with himself and his decisions. Of course, he might eventually do this with a lot of money. Does that make it right? No Does that make it acceptable? Maybe. Does that make it smart? Probably

Colleges HONOR scholarships if you get HURT while in HS as long as YOU COMMITTED TO A SCHOOL!

Every Process we do in life is either Maximized or Minimized. Examples in aforementioned posts.

Should NEVER have let CFB Coaches leave their Commitments while in their Contract.
