James Franklin post game.

Franklin: "I'm ultimately responsible for all of it. We'll find a way. We're going to get this done. I give you my word. We are going to find a way to take the next step."

Franklin: "I'm upset with myself. Because I know the guys in that locker room are hurting. We should have finished that game."

Said it was a bad play call and it's on him. Then changed the subject and went off on a tirade about going to class and taking notes in meetings. Kinda came off as a douche. He took responsibility, but quickly dropped the blame on everyone else.

Here is my question: was that the play you called on the sideline (no way) or what you audibled into at the last second?

and at that point Trace had no time to change it up. I'm betting TM saw how bad a call this was but had no chance to over-ride.

And if that was the play they dialed up... good golly, i hope not.

Also saw on twitter he got into some verbal altercation with students. Unlike him
That is what “emotionally-driven” people do when they know they are on they brink of being “exposed”.

Highly-competent, successful and deservedly-confident individuals know how to appropriately respond after such a game. James Franklin will never come close to emulating Joe Paterno.

The small details really matter...PSU’s lack thereof mattered in this game.

You are presuming a great deal with your post. If this did happen, you have no idea who or what was said to him as he left the field. He could have just as easily been defending one of his players. But then again, you are one of the more consistently negative posters on the board, so I understand why you think this way

Here's your very awful hypothetical.

A lot of kids saw this disaster of a finish and it left an impression. If CJF falls on the sword it still leaves kids and parents with a big ? in their minds about us ever winning the mnc.

So, does the amazing young man who QB's this team fall on it for Franklin?

Does Trace say something like.. 'i felt really good about the coaches playcall but at the last moment i realized we were in trouble but couldn't adjust fast enough. Put the blame on me, guys. I had it and blew it.'

He does that, it covers for Franklin and Rahne. Sure, everyone knows what happened but man, those kids must love those coaches to take the heat for them.. and maybe we salvage something.

I would not want to be Franklin tonite.. I could not sleep. maybe ever again. Rahne is probably packing his shit as I type.

Holy overreaction

Real coaches never put themselves in this position. First and foremost they are competent and sufficiently self-confident to never engage in such an embarrassing incident.

I hope you're right. 5 months from now kids forget things (although you can bet every other coach will make damned sure they remember).

I cannot find any possible way to justify what we just witnessed.

Been on the phone with others and their take is the same as mine... how the F does that possibly happen?

I love his recruiting efforts and the passion he brings.. but this decision is -- bar none -- the worst I've seen from a psu coach (well, aside from jerry) in 5 decades. I have no idea how he gets past this... and the only way it happens is for Trace to take this team on his back and will them to win.

The kid was incredible.

I don't see how anyone can watch that press conference and not love James Franklin. He's right. We are a great program. We aren't elite yet and he doesn't want anyone to get comfortable just being great. Wants to take the next step. He's looking in the mirror and giving his word that he will figure it out and we will get over that hump. Hell he was practically recruiting 5 star kids in that press conference. If he was allowed to say their names he would have. We need to keep bringing in elite talent like we have past couple years.

He's a hypocrite and his team isn't great. He wants to get at his kids for using phones, being late etc, look in the mirror coach. You are fighting with students after the game in the stadium. Get a grip.

Respectfully think he’s ahead of himself. We are good, we are not great. Great teams don’t lose four 4th quarter leads in two years. Great teams don’t lose games they COULD AND SHOULD have won. Great teams don’t give away games.

I love that he’s pissed tonight, he should be. Hopefully one of these days we will be great again. But we certainly aren’t there yet. We were knocking at the door tonight and failed to realize it was already unlocked, ready for us to walk in.

Really? Don't know how old you are, but you seem silly and immature if this is your reaction after a tough loss. "Feed me Seymour!" He took the blame and committed they would all work to a higher standard. Oh, and he's implying a consistent ethic if the team really wants to be elite. That it all matters.

Didn’t Paterno chase down and yell at the referees after a tough loss to Iowa? If you think Paterno acted immaculately after every game then your memory is failing you.

So your “ethical barometer” is incapable of distinguishing between overtly corrupt officials and some harmless fans ?

Ethics have nothing to do with it. The specifics of the triggering event are irrelevant. You either keep your cool or you don’t. Paterno mostly did, just like Franklin mostly does.

Please. Joe got into it with fans during the course of his tenure also. It's just that social media was not around.

No apparently he got into an altercation as he was running back into the tunnel. Poster was saying they saw it on twitter

You've got to be kidding me! You call that an altercation?! Re-watch the tape. He thanked the person but then had to be held back from going back to say more. BFD.

I’m a Jets fan and we have a statue on sidelines in Bowels whose teams check out emotionally on a regular basis
I’m glad Franklin shows emotion
I wish I had a job where I could be that emotionally invested
I am sure no one is taking this loss as hard as him

Is he a perfect coach? No he still has deficiencies in game management and our inability to close out games is becoming a trend

I am not and X’s and O’s Guy to see what needs fixing but let’s see what They come up with

Our OLine was a disaster and is still not dominate but they are improving
It’s just taking a little longer

Same with backend of defense
Seems like talent there but sloppy

The fan was not harmless, it was a dick move by him yelling at CJF as he was leaving the field. You can say CJF shouldn't have rabbit ears, but CJF gave a pretty innocuous response and the guy kept it up.

Agreed, just watched the 'altercation'...

kid makes a statement about '4th and 5 you should have passed it coach. That was a bad call.'
Franklin 'I appreciate your input.'
kid 'I love you, but that's a bad call.' at this point Franklin tries to come back (he does not appear pissed) 'I love you to death. I love you to death.'

Franklin is then forced down the tunnel. Kid keeps running his mouth to the camera...

I have ZERO problem with how Franklin handled this, ZERO. (start sarcasm) Probably would have invited the kid into the locker room to speak to the coaching staff to tell him what specific play he would have called and why, let the kid explain how poorly the OLine executed their assignments and let 6 O$U defenders into the backfield while only one of the OL executed a block, or how the D forgot how to tackle and execute defending screen passes. (end of sarcasm)

Guess you don’t remember joe sprinting after the refs and grabbing him by the shoulder. He was emotional just like Franklin.

You obviously didn’t see the interaction in question. He did not fight with a student. An armchair QB told him bad call and he said thank you for the input. Saying he had an altercation or fight is overdramatized and simply untrue

Paterno lost games too. The goal line loss to Alabama. Losing the national championship by letting Indiana get back into a close game late. Losing the whole team down the stretch in ‘99. Every coach - every person - will have these moments to look back and wish they’d done differently.

Honestly, its the offense. This is why teams that have used this offense for years win game 56-40. The offense is challenged in bleeding the clock and keeping the defense off the field.

Calling it an “altercation” is a little overboard, and it looked like it was one student that he was “jawing” with.
