Just tuned in to the Pirates/Cubs game

Having some whine on the holiday?
Nah, the Cubs were going to win in any event. It was a dirty play, though, typical of the Cubs. I know you're a big fan and they're a good team, but there is a reason that the Cubs are largely hated around baseball. And it's not sour grapes due to them being good.

I see that Madden and company continue to play dirty and still getting away with it. Unreal.
I hope Rizzo tears an ACL someday.

Never wish for an injury to befall a player, no matter the circumstances. BoT members, well OK, but ya gotta draw the line there.

Bases loaded nobody out. Ground ball to short, Rizzo force out by a mile. Diaz steps forward to throw to first, which would have been an easy double play. Rizzo goes way out of the base line and sticks his leg out and knocks Diaz off his feet as he's throwing. Goes into right field, two runs score. Diaz momentarily hurt, but it could have been worse (remember Jung Ho?). No overturn from MLB, although it was a clear violation of the rule. He's OK, but if he weren't I'm sure Maddon would have smugly called it Plantar again.** Rizzo was up in the 9th, and were I the Pirates, I would have drilled him. Of course they didn't, which unfortunately is their MO. Just ask McCutchen about that. Hard to get respect from the opposition when you continuously put up with that sort of sh#t.

** This one is for you, Oldtiredlion.

He slid over the top of home plate. I am a Phillies fan, so have no dog in this fight, but that seems legal to me. The object of the game is to win. That's a hard slide with the object of knocking the catcher down. If you don't want to be knocked down be aware of the guy running at you.

No dog in the fight either, yet I plunk him first time up. Have to send a message you can't injure our players. Also BIG fan of Utley but as many times as he got plunked for his play. He always played hard. You expect to get hit sometimes. That last leg lift by Rizzo was a little dirty though. Spikes up?

The catcher is three feet away from the plate.
The runner has a clear, unobstructed path to the plate.
The catcher has his back to the runner.

I suppose you also think chop blocks are hard, clean, heads up plays.
Can't be the smartest man in the room unless you disagree.

Watch the play again. See how MLB ruled on it. Rizzo made full contact with the plate. It is a good hard, clean play that was a huge part of the game when MLB was still watchable. Simply smart, legal baseball.

Chop blocks I'm not okay with because the player is engaged with someone else. I have no issue with a cut block.

I have how you're comparing a legal slide to an illegal block...smh

It's called runner interference: Rule 6.01(a)(5). And it is basically the same as a chop block....player doesn't see it coming and there is serious potential for injury (chop block could be considered more dangerous because the player is engaged, but at least he has a chance to see it coming).

Serious question....... when does it become dirty? The catcher had his back to him.....can he run him completely over and tackle him as long as he is within reach of the plate.....still a clean, solid play? Both feet spikes first? Kicking? This is not the same as taking out a runner on a double-play ball.

Rizzo is a female dog. He should have rawlings on his rib cage. Shame on the pirates. I was at the game. 60/40 cubs fans. They are worse then any fan base in America.

Maybe, but I don't go to bad restaurants and I don't spend good money to watch bad baseball. In 2015, when the Bucs were doing well, they were 15th in attendance out of 30 teams, averaging amost 31K a game. Philly, with a far larger population, drew just over 23K. The Cubs sucked in the 60's when I was a kid and they averaged less than 10 thousand fans a game 5 out of 6 years. My cousin lived there at the time and he went to the games when he wanted to be alone with his girlfriend. Put a good team on the field and people will show up.

I wasn't in favor of the rules changes, but under the current rules, that was clearly a cheap, chickenshit play. Rizzo should have gotten the next one in the ear hole. I don't recall any retribution for the Kang play either. The Hurdle way. Rinse and repeat.

Looked clean to me. And I still would have drilled home on his next at bat. Honestly, why not?

No disagreement there. I'd have no issue with the Bucs throwing at him. That's another part of the game that is lacking--self policing.

I don't understand anyone saying this was dirty. Rizzo has every right to take him out there as long as he makes contact with the base. I don't see a "change in his path" nor did MLB upon review. Diaz should be prepared for that. Kudos to Rizzo---again--good hard, clean baseball.

Bullshit. He changed his path to initiate contact with the catcher who was 3 feet or more in front of home plate. As usual you couldn’t find your ass with both hands.

Diaz took one step and there was no change in his path--as MLB correctly ruled with the benefit of replay. Try again.

So you are saying that replay officials always get a call right?
You are extremely naive my friend.

Watch the video. Rizzo is running down the line and his foot steps are either in foul territory or directly on top of the chalk. Then approximately 15 feet from the plate he starts veering to the left and takes out Diaz as he's standing three feet up the first base line. It was a cheap shot.

No...replay doesn't always get it right--in this case they did. The fact anyone is upset about this is simply insane IMO. People just looking for a reason to bitch.

Also, MLB has never applied this rule with any common sense. I recall another play involving the Pirates soon after the Posey Rule was instituted. It was another bases loaded play with Russell Martin behind the plate for the Buccos. An infield ground ball resulted in a throw to home for the force out. Martin had his foot in the center of the plate for the out, or so it seemed. The call on the field was an out but a review overturned the call because Martin didn't give the runner a clear path to the plate. Well, duh. The only way to get the force out was to have his foot on the plate. It wasn't as if he set up a block to get the tag. Soon afterward MLB tweaked the rule to allow for such a scenario. Too bad they didn't have the nerve to apply the rule in a sensible manner at the time. The same applies to the Cubs game.

The picture proves my point. His slide takes him directly to the plate. He's not required to avoid the catcher. It was a smart, hard, clean baseball play and the picture tells you that. His entire body will hit the plate
You must be a Cubs fan. Dude, look up the baseline behind Rizzo. You can clearly see the dark turned up dirt which clearly shows Rizzo's footsteps. If you follow them to where's he's sliding it's easy to see he changed his path. I feel sorry for you if you can't see that.

Pirates fan--watch the slide--completely in line with the plate. I feel sorry for you that you don't comprehend that being good, smart baseball. See the result. Five to ten years ago everyone would have praised that. Nothing has changed other than people being wimps. Great slide--great baseball.

Yeah, nothing has changed. Except the rules.
