Just watched the Nova parade in Philly

It’s small scale but fun for the students and players. Kudos to them. 2 of 3 years is a pretty amazing accomplishment in a sport with so much parody. There will be no shortage of V flags hanging from the shore houses this summer.
Villanova has been my favorite Big 5 team since the days of Johnny Jones. Good for those students. Fond memories. I like a good "parody" too. Parity is okay. ;)

Johnny Jones, that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long, long time. Weird shooting style, if I recall correctly, but very good/consistent.
A guy in my neighborhood of So. Philly played around that time - Frank Gillen, a left handed guard. Had a pretty good career at Nova.

I, too, was a big fan of Johnny and his corkscrew jumpshot. I think he was a senior when I was a freshman. I remember being at the game against Princeton at the Field House which pitted Johnny against Princeton AA, Geoff Petrie. Great game. Villanova won. The Johnny Jones/Geoff Petrie mathcup was pretty much a draw. Both played great.

Do you mean Wali Jones? And I remember Johnny Baum at Temple with what Les Keiter called his ‘corkscrew jumper.’ OTOH, my memory ain’t what it used to be....
Wali Jones had the "jackknife jumper." When Johnny Baum and Temple won the NIT in 1969 it still had prestige.

You and I have discussed the "old" Villanova moments before, but what about the double OT win over Western Kentucky in the 1971 semis? The first OT was incredible - 11 to 11. I was in 6th grade and my mother let me stay up to watch the game. I was such a wreck during the OTs that she almost banished me to bed because I had chewed my fingernails down so far that some were bleeding. I begged her to let me watch the end of the game. She relented.

Good stuff. And, in 1971, Penn was 27-0 and Villanova beat them in the NCAA tournament 90-47. Wackiest game ever.

Frankie Gillen sucked but he was a pretty good mugger in Kraft’s ball zone. Gillen is the guy that tripped/kicked/whatever Bob Lanier and put Lanier out for awhile, maybe the season. I don’t remember.

No, I mean Johnny Jones. He had a funny way of holding the ball at the top of his jumpshot, not remotely standard. Nevertheless, he was a very good shooter.

Wally through up his jumper with his legs spread, wishboned.

There was nothing whacky about that game. Villanova was peaking. Penn got thrashed. Same thing happened to Okla in ‘16 when Villanova beat them by 44 in the semifinal.

I recall the game, of course. Jim McDaniel was Western Kentucky’s stud 6’10 AA center. The shot that stood out to me was Porter’s jumper from deeeeep in the corner, nothing but net, in the first OT (I think).

UCLA won the final because Chris Ford twice inbounded the ball to UCLA against their vaunted 2-2-1 fullcourt press. UCLA converted both times.

Also, Wooden did something he swore he’d never do. He held the ball near the end of the game, forcing Villanova out of their zone. Villanova never played man under Kraft so it was strange to see knock-kneed Howard Porter on Sidney Wicks thirty feet out.

IIRC, Villanova lost by 6. That was the one year UCLA was vulnerable; the year between Alcindor and Walton (again, IIRC).

Also, Steve Patterson had a career game and scored 29 points. I had to look this part up, but he was 13 - 18 from the field. Outscored Howard Porter who finished with 25 on 10 - 21 from the field.

OK... and what did Bob Bigelow's shot resemble? lol.

As to penn v villanova. one of a kind. period. stuff happens and anyone who thinks villanova was on such a roll that it was inevitable likely didn't watch nova v fordham or penn v south carolina. btw, fordham was good. point is, it wasn't like nova was on some magical ride, they were playing well. penn played horrifically from the jump and was never in it.

And never forget that penn emptied the bench lonnnnnnnnnng before kraft pulled his starters. Excuse, me, he really never pulled his starters. winning by 40. It was a DB move and said a lot about the kind of person Kraft was. Not good things, imo.

Want to argue with me? Here ya go.. explain the minutes.

Roll-out signs at the Palestra: A Penn sign said ‘Cock Roche (for John Roche of SC) drops dead after running into a Wohl.’...The LaSalle Explorer dressed up like a Space Man...Les Keiter, ‘it’s a ring-tail howitzer!’....Yo Yo shooting baskets at halftime....Best atmosphere in basketball.

Ken Durrett poured in 45 on that very same Jim McDaniels.

That game where students threw streamers was an exhibition game btw. Nova and Northwood (FL). Coach Massimino was coaching Northwood at the time and Jay brought him and his team up for a fun exhibition. As part of it, they let the students throw streamers. Technical fould was called, I think Rollie had his kid purposely miss it or step across the line. I think Nova and LaSalle also did it a few years ago and both coaches agreed to miss the technical foul shots.

Kenny Doooo-ret, pride of Schenley HS. Larry Cannon weren’t no slouch neither.
IMO, Larry Cannon is an all time top five Big 5 player. I’d only include players from prior to 1980. I’m not sure when the real Big 5 changed but I think it was about then.

Larry Cannon - LaSalle
Ken Durrett - LaSalle
Howard Porter - Villanova
Billy Melchionni - Villanova
Guy Rodgers - Temple

The best player of the above five, by position, was probably Guy Rodgers.

Paul Arizin of Villanova and Tom Gola of LaSalle played before the Big 5 was formed in 1955. Both are Hall of Famers.

Palestra! Double-header...

So many memories of those.

Think this was the holiday "tournament" that used to be there for a few years:

St. Josephs with Goukas, Cliff Anderson (edison), Duff, Ford etc. beat Bowling Green with Nate Thurmond and Howie Komives (sp). Think Jim Boyle hit a foul line shot to win the game
and
other game Villanova beat wichita state with (now can't remember their great player-- Dave Stallworth?.)
Wonderful memories

Correct me if I am wrong, but what I think I remember is that the fans of the home team in the first game, that hung around, would cheer for the home team in the second game. Right or wrong? I am talking re 60s into the 70s.

Just wish the politics of the current day would allow PSU to play annual game like the MSU game a couple years ago--sold out and my bet could have gotten mid-teens for that game.

Stallworth is correct. I think Komives led the nation scoring one year (could be wrong).
