Just wondering...

What burns people out, whether it's a coaching position or just about any other job, is interpersonal conflict. Money can be a factor as well, but start weighing people down with things that would tend to keep them awake at night and they'll be looking for a way out of it.

What's the best way to make Cael stay at PSU for the next 35 years or so?
Status quo. Cael is a wrestling history buff. This was not a whim. He had a well thought out plan to come here. The only place he could go to achieve what he was after. Of his own initiative, he is going nowhere else. Fortunate for us, Cael will retire at PSU. Just my opinion though.

I think the key is to understand that there may be some lean years sometime out into the future. When there is, do the same people who admire him so, call for his head? Having our expectations jacked up thru the roof, it's easy for some people to get there - they're oftimes referred to as fair-weather friends.

He's in the best state for HS wrestling culture, recruiting & volume of excellent kids, and at the biggest university with the strongest athletic facilities & budget and alumni support.

And he's successfully building his other vision - a very competitive & successful regional Olympic training center.

As long as he wants to coach college kids, where else is he gonna go ?

First we would have to define lean years, to see what the probability of that type of event would be.

I don't even know how to define "lean years" exactly other than to say - when things aren't necessarily going as well as our overall fan base expects them to. The probability of that eventually happening is there. "Eventually" being the operative word. I've seen the sentiment change in other programs that were once doing well. The coaches went from being deemed as "Kings" who could do no wrong, to ones who are critiqued for their every action/inaction. In other words, it's easy for fans to love their coach(es) when they are winning, but underperform for too long...So I say this as a prophylactic measure so we don't lose the guy.

My only concern would be if he gets offered the national team coaching spot. Wouldn't leave for anything else. And I'd imagine he has that offer whenever he wants it.

Seems like he's the anti-Foley in this regard. Folk style is his baby and he appears not to want anything to do with the clowns and penny-ante mafiosi at UWW

Don't really agree with that. He is heavily involved with coaching the NLWC, which is all freestyle. However, you may be right about him not being interested in the National Coach job due to the politics involved.

Not concerned at all about that. With decentralization toward the RTCs, Cael's current position has more influence than that job does.

I also think when he would meet with his accountants they would urge him to keep his day job.

I think he also likes being king of his own domain. When your the FS coach you got other influences.

Family is important and I think PSU is #unrivaled in what that provides for his nuclear family and his growing psu family.

I know other teams will debate the merits of their program but what they built in 7 years is unparalleled in this sport and where they are dreaming to take it nobody but the major 5-6 programs would allow.

7 years in and from my perspective they are still just getting started.

I didn't say he didn't like freestyle or didn't value its importance, but he clearly loves our style of wrestling - Foley shows his disdain about our style weekly.

Totally agree with that last part. The next stage is getting NLWC guys to the top of the podium. I think that's coming soon and is necessary to compete against tOSU who I view as our main long-time rival in this whole endeavor (i.e. having the best all-around wrestling program).

Let's say Nico, Zain or Frank, Wreck Hall, and David Taylor all win 2020 Olympic gold, and Ed Ruth and Phil Davis go on a 4-year unbeaten streak in MMA.

Will that be enough to overcome the school that produced Lance Palmer?

Cael will be at Penn State until it's not fun anymore, and that can be from any number of reasons. It's not just about money and winning. Right now, he's here...and I'm going to enjoy every second...he's a class act.

With the family now firmly established State College for 7 years, I don't see Cael uprooting them. His kids are growing up in the community. In addition, I doubt the national team coaching job would be as lucrative. Cael makes a good living as the head coach of the nation's top college wrestling program, and he also runs the nation's top RTC. The NLWC not only affords him the ability to help develop Olympic-level wrestlers, it also comes with the special PSU Recruiting Slush Fund™ :D:D

I don't think his situation is any different than a lot of folks except that he will always have more options. He probably stays as long as its enjoyable, what would most likely make it tough is working in an environment with no support and continued micro management. As long as PSU provides the support and right environment don't see him heading off for just more money

Good point. I remember reading that John Wooden was indignant that after winning a ton of championships in a row, the one year his team did not win it, many UCLA people "joke" criticized him. Let's remember that "joke" criticism is lame and annoying and should not be made in an off year.
