KC Philly Super Bowl

I was really shocked that KC couldn't handle Philly's pass rush. That really spooked Mahomes and made him look mortal. Albeit, after the game was decided, he made two incredible TD passes that normal people couldn't make. KC totally abandoned any running attack. I was surprised that they didn't try to run in their first possession after halftime. At that point, they were down 24 which is a deficit that can be overcome in today's offense-minded NFL. But going right to the pass allowed Philly to simply rush the passer and forget about defending the run.

On the other side of the ball, it was clear KC was going to defend Saquon at any cost. This opened up the run for Hurts as well as the pass. Hurts had a very efficient night except for the one INT which was basically a punt. It was 3rd and 10 from the 30 yard line. That would have been a 47 yard FG try.

Lots being made that Brady sounded "giddy" when it was clear KC was going to lose. He still keeps his GOAT rating for at least another year.
KC basically abandoned the run before the game started. I think they had 1 run on their first twelve plays.
KC did decide to "make Hurts win the game" and, to his credit he did. Barkley changed the game just by being him.

The Eagles defensive line performance brought back memories of Superbowl IX when the Steelers 'Steel Curtain' mercilessly chased Fran Tarkenton around Tulane Stadium in NO.

The 'Mean Green Machine' that is that Eagles D-line is a worthy descendant of your WPA neighbors vaunted Steeler defenses.

I mean this as a compliment. That was Steelers football. The type that I grew up with and always enjoyed watching.

Congratulations to all of the PSU/Eagles fans on your Superbowl victory.

I am relieved/glad KC didn't win. So tired of them weaseling out so many close wins. Makes you wonder why someone in the AFC could not have put the hammer down on them earlier like the Eagles did. I guess not good enough defenses. They were so ripe for the picking and glad they got their a$$ handed to them.

It was so refreshing not to have the constant shots of Taylor Swift. Just as refershing not to see Kelce trot 10 yards down the field turn around and have the pass thrown to him for a reception while there is not a defender within 3 yards. Then have every horse's rear end analyst proclaim Kelce is the greatest football player ever.

The Steelers do not have a monopoly on ferocious defense. C’mon man, I’m 45 years old and I wasn’t even alive when the Steel Curtain was winning Superbowls.

This is Eagles football. They’ve placed a premium on selecting and developing talent on both lines to a greater degree than any other franchise over the last 10 years and I’d paid off.

I think anyone including the most ardent Eagles fans was shocked at the first half of the Super Bowl. No one saw that coming, but in retrospect should have. The Chiefs have been running through the raindrops all season. All those one score games most of which they played just good enough not to lose, and a couple they were fortunate to win when they shouldn’t have. Is this the end of their Super Bowl era? Not predicting anything but #15 isn’t getting any younger, Andy Reid has nothing left to prove and it wouldn’t surprise me if he retired. He’s crazy if he doesn’t. What is Kelce’s future status? They have several high value players with super bowl rings that will command an extremely high price on the free agency market. They’ll have some difficult decisions to make as to which ones they can afford to keep. Lastly, the price for winning super bowls is diminished draft capital the following year. They’ve been drafting near the bottom now for four or more years which makes it hard to keep up in the talent race. If one for thumb is in the cards, they better get it soon.

KC has a lot of young talent on D but they’re a mess on O. The line is average overall, but there is some elite talent there. They don’t have much at the skill positions save for the rookie WR. Kelce looks about shot.

Brady had a major roster overhaul at about this stage of his career when his original Super Bowl team started turning over. KC already has for the most part but they desperately need to give Mahomes a talent upgrade.

Andy looked very old a tired yesterday. He’s not exactly the picture of health. I get he wants to keep working with Mahomes but not sure if he can keep up with demands of being an NFL HC much longer.

You nailed it re: Reid. He looked really over it - just an empty stare most of the game. Spags was the only guy on their sideline looking like a head coach.

Yup, my wife said she felt bad for Andy at one point. The Chiefs still have one of the best front offices in the league and Mahomes has a somewhat team friendly contract . They may be in a slight rebuild here/maybe need a year or two to catch a second wind, but they’re not going away.

They were lucky to get to the SB. Thankfully they were put in their place and got drilled. Hopefully they are now on the decline and let new blood come to the top of the AFC. Reid is old, Kelce is old, no way they can miraculously continue to win all these one score games. Let's start next season with some team other than them winning the AFC West. Get them out of KC for a playoff game.

Good point about their draft position and is a good example of one thing that is better in the NFL than college. Would like to see Allen get one and I'm not even a Bills fan.

I mean, are some seriously calling the Chiefs toast? They lost two games before last night. They'll be back, they have the QB.

The Eagles DL won that game last night and I don't think ANYONE realized how big of an advantage they had at that position. It was a horrible matchup for Mahomes/Chiefs offense - it reminded me of those Giants DLs (Tuck, Strahan, etc.) that used to be Brady's kryptonite. It didn't help that Reid seemed to panic and abandon the run a tad too early.

Uneducated here, but it seems like the Eagles will need to offload some of that skill money and continue to invest how well they have built those OL/DLs - the window could be open for more years to come. That rookie DL (#98?) has been absolutely impressive this postseason.

Reid went back to his Philly “Bad Andy” phase - abandoning the run at the earliest opportunity. Used to drive the fanbase crazy - that and McNabb coming up short under pressure.

Jalen Carter is the reincarnation of Jerome Brown. Brown would have walked to the Hall of Fame if his life wasn’t cut short. His death killed that Buddy Ryan D.

My friend. Just because you were not alive to witness the ferocity of a young Joe Greene and Jack Lambert among others, does not mean that the Steelers defense was just as dominating as you witnessed yesterday in Superbowl IX, if not more so.

That Steelers D outscored the Minnesota Vikings and the vaunted 'Purple People Eaters' 2-0.

Please take no offense. My comparison is meant to give praise to what that Eagle D accomplished. And to to detract from it.....

There is a big pendulum swing happening at the highest levels of football -- in NFL and college. Size and muscle and running the ball is in, finesse and west coast passing and spread may be going out.

Philly, Baltimore and Detroit are all built on dominance (and incredible size) up front and right now they look like the future. Eagles weren't going to say it publicly before the game, but they loved this matchup, they thought they could manhandle KC and they did. Baltimore would have been a much tougher matchup.

KC may be back but they have to upgrade OL and DL and that may take time. Everybody is going to be looking for Mekhi Bectons but there aren't many 6-7, 375 pound dudes who can move like that guy. Yes KC defense contained Barkley but they had to completely distort themselves to do it -- and they gave up 33, and could have given up more.

Anyway for Penn State it means this is a good time to have OL and DL programs that are both among the best in the country.

Reid had the same demeanor as usual. As long as PM is there, they will have a great chance. Get a few guys healthy (Rice) along with some key adds and a good chance to see KC there once again. They did just win every gave they played last regular season (with their starters) less a game at Buffalo.

Great game by Philly. But the NFL is all about adjustments. And no one has been better than that than Andy Trid and the KC Chiefs w/Pat Mahomes.

Really like this analysis, plus it's funny.

Link: The O-line committee

Very detailed commentary from two longtime NFL O-linemen (Alex Boone and Jeremiah Sirles). They agreed there wasn't much Reid could have done with this one. They couldn't run because Pacheco isn't 100%. They couldn't throw downfield because Mahomes was getting less than 2 seconds. They were screwed against Philly because they had a guard playing left tackle (because KC has whiffed on tackles last couple years).

They could have switched to dink and dunk passing, but that ceased to be an option once they were down 17. Basically the chiefs had to know knew their goose was cooked early.

They explained Fangio's defense in a way that I understood. It's very similar to Iowa's defense. If you can get consistent pressure from the front four, you can basically drop back 5 into deep zone coverage (umbrella concept) and have two linebackers/safeties freelancing and reading the QB's eyes. The two don't have to worry about coverage because of the zone behind them, and they can play for INTs.

The problem comes (and you can see this w Iowa) when you don't have a dominant great D-line and the QB can operate (or run the ball). Then the Fangio defense isn't so magical. It depends on having four great players up front.

Mahomes was Dak Prescottish last night - lots of garbage time stat padding but killed his team when it counted

He was awful but really it's just proof that even the best QBs turn to mush when they get less than 2 seconds in the pocket before contact. Hurts isn't nearly as physically talented but he was incredibly accurate behind that Eagles OL. He made great decisions but it is a lot easier to make great decisions when you have multiple attractive options.

The Eagles beat the Ravens in Baltimore.

Correct--they have Mahomes who is just turning 30 I believe. Even if Kelce retires they're still going to be a contender. Eagles played a near perfect game. Couldn't have been more impressed. Mahomes wasn't sharp but he also had zero time to throw--never going to work against that secondary

Philly fans can be a little nutty.
I went to the parade as my teenage kids really wanted to go. It was fun and I didn’t witness any poor behavior, but not sure I will go again.

The players and everyone else on the busses were encouraging the beer tossing. I think someone just got a little over excited and donked a fastball off Howie’s noggin.

Yep, still plenty of time left in Mahomes' prime for KC to rebuild the O, starting with the tackle spots.

And that was still a pretty good NE O-line that protected Brady against the Spags-led Big Blue D.

This is now 2 SBs where Mahomes had to play behind a completely over matched O-line, including the injury ravaged unit against the Bucs D.

As great as Brady was, he would have been even more toast.
