KJ Hamler Saved The Day

Definitely need to get Hamler and others involved. Can’t keep slinging it to JJ apparently:

JJ was 6 for 67, which isn't bad stat wise, but the drops (was it 3 or 4?) could have had him around 9 for 115.

4. Third down on the left sideline that would have moved the sticks. Third down where trace hit him up the middle. Deep down the left sideline where he alligator armed it and deep right on the sideline. Guess alligator arming it isn’t technically a drop?

If Taylor doesn’t whiff on that tackle...... App State runs down the clock and kicks the game winning chip shot as time expires.

I know these kids get excited and all....... but if the App St TB had awareness, he takes a knee there inside the 10 - - - and the game is all over.

Same thing with Iowa last year. Hard thing to think about in the heat of the moment.

Absolutely. I said In the game thread to let them score. And the missed tackle was the best thing that could have happened

you seem like a smart guy, but that is pretty much the stupidist thing I've read today, and that is saying a lot.

Hamler is going to be special. Johnson is a possession receiver. He does not get much separation and hands are suspect

Thompkins didn’t do anything which was surprising

I believe he had a 30+ yard punt return, which could have broken it to the house.

He shared a lot of time with Polk today. A lot more than he did last year. Don't remember #3 being targeted very much. Hopefully, Shorter can shed his walking boot and rise to the occasion and usurp this spot.

Or Hipo. Or CSB. Or Dotson. Or George.

Thompkins had a nice punt return, i just wish he would field the ball more often and try to break one.

Trace only had eyes for JJ most of the game. He needs to spread the wealth.

Perhaps that is who he developed the most trust in during camp.

Today show Hamler definitely deserves some trust. I thought it was a bad decision to come out of the end zone on the KO return but he made it look good. Solid hands on the TD catch too.

He’s going to make some shit happen on kickoff returns this season.

I was somewhat surprised he hesitated at all. Before the kick I was thinking that as long as it wasn’t kicked out of the end zone he wouldn’t hesitate. He was itching to bring one out all game.

Need to get him the ball in space.....he has great speed and looks to have some nice wiggle.

Ummm, stormin’ is absolutely correct.... as soon as the App St runner crosses the goal-line, I immediately knew we’d at least have a shot...
you have never ever seen a player do this, because it has never happened, and no player can make that decision when he is trying to play football
if the coaches wanted to kick a FG, they should have had the qb take a knee for 3 plays
when you run a play, the players try to score a td
I seriously question if some of you guys have ever played FB beyond the flag football level

I can see both ends. In the heat of the moment, who gives up a guaranteed 6 for a shot at 3? The coach didn't call a FB Dive, so it's not like he was thinking such either.

Very iffy.

You’ve never seen a player go down instead of trying to score (or risk going out of bounds)? If the RB did that App State almost certainly would’ve won.

ok, you're right, and Hamler should have caught the ball and stayed out of the end zone so PSU could run off more clock before tying the game, since scoring with 40 seconds left game App State time to win the game - which they almost did
like I said, you guys need to think like a football player, not an overweight old college football fan

Most certainly have seen it (Though I - personally - don’t think the RB for ASU is a “goat” or something. It’s only natural for “instincts to take over” there)
As for the rest of your idiocy, the opportunity to ice the game did not present itself until that play - when the RB got past the first down markers, and would have them given ASU a fresh set of downs.

If you wanna’ continue tripling down on “stoopid”, knock yourself out.
how do you ice a tie game? please explain

Happens a lot actually.

I don’t care how much of a freak athlete JJ is, if you can catch balls that hit you squarely in your hands then you can’t be the number one receiver.

After watching the non-catch of JJ a lot, the defense may have been just enough. I know the ball hit JJ in the hands, but the momentum may have been thrown off just enough on that play to make a difference...we may never know...but none of us will ever be in JJ's situation either...at game speed it looked like the defender did just enough....and we have zero experience to back what we would do in the same situation because none of us have ever been in that situation....

You're way off on this. App St scoring a TD when they did is the only thing that gave us a chance to tie. It's undeniable that a better thing would have been for their RB to go down close to the goal line. Now that is very different than saying he should have thought about doing that or been coached to do that. But in hindsight, that almost certainly would have won the game for App St.

And your comparison to Hamler is off as well. At that point, PSU is losing. When you're losing, you score as soon as you possibly can because you never know if you're going to get another chance. For App St, the score was tied so foregoing a TD for a sure fire chip shot FG is not nearly as risky as Hamler purposefully not scoring a TD just to use up time when PSU is trailing.

You take the points when you can get the points. There is no guarantee that a team makes a kick, even if it is a chipshot. Any number of things could happen to make not scoring the worst decision of your life, a muffled snap, a block, a bad kick. You score the TD and then rely on your defense to do their job.

You may be right, but I wouldn’t be surprised if App’s coach is second guessing that right now.

Regardless, at the spur of the moment, you can’t blame the App player for taking it in.

I'm really not disagreeing with you. I don't think if you're App St in that situation you purposefully tell the kid "hey, if you break into the clear, fall down about the 3 so we can bleed the clock and kick a FG to win." But, had he done that, App St very likely wins. Would you rather take your chances on flubbing up a chip shot FG as time expires which would just lead to OT or give Penn State more than a minute and a half and 2 TOs to drive down, score the tying TD and then have all of the momentum going into OT? Honestly, I think a good argument can be made for either.

#1 It would be a rare occasion where a RB stops short of the goal line in that exact situation,
#2 The chip shot that you speak of reminds me of the Alabama game where Blair Thomas was getting 5 yards a pop and Joe runs the clock down for that chip shot you speak of. Kick blocked,Alabama wins.
