Lady Lion BB - something is wrong

Merkle (2/3), Hall (1), and Campion (1) have all enter the portal. Same as last year the best players are leaving.
It's shocking how bad the program is right now.....one conference win this season! I think l remember that Kraft stated that Kreiger would be the coach next season. Lame duck coach on a one year contract doesn't seem like a winning proposition.

Kraft supposedly has done a great job advancing the interests of the football program, but with his handling of the women's basketball program how can anyone evaluate him as anything but incompetent.....

Wasn't this Kreiger's 6th year as coach? 3 or 4 years would seem the maximum for a program turnaround by a competent coach, especially in the current free agency, transfer portal environment. And when a program's best players leave that is the most glaring evidence of a coach that must be replaced IMMEDIATELY.

Edit: And I was very excited when Coach K was hired due to her taking Marquette (I belivieve) to the NCAA, with an up tempo offense, but there is no excitement remaining........

I posted this in an earlier thread but here it goes again.
I give Kraft a pass on the WBB coach. He has stepped up for the football program (coach salaries) and he has to deal with NIL issues and players getting paid. That's a lot. Plus, the MBB team will require some $$ to compete next year. My thought is that this wasn't the time financially to buy out the WBB coach.
Just my opinion.

I understand what you are saying. But next to football, men's BB and possibly men's wrestling, women's BB seems like the highest profile PSU sports program. And the financial requirements to hire a competent women's BB coach and field a competent team can't be insurmountable given the way other B10 programs manage to do it, with those programs having drastically less overall athletic dept funding as compared to PSU. The women's top 25 and NCAA bracket are filled with small school, small budget athletic programs. WVU, Creighton, SDST, Illinois, Richmond.......

Maybe eliminate a bathroom or two from the monument of a stadium that is now under construction, or raise the price of beer another $dollar, or ..... to field a competent women's BB team. Pretty poor resource allowcation when a top B10 athletic program can't fund the replacement of a failed women's BB coach after a 6 year tenure. JMO

Yep this is on Kraft. Unfortunately it appears he spends no time prioritizing women's hoops so it just is left flapping n the wind. Embarrassing.

I was looking on the internet to verify the terms and conditions of Kieger's contract and came across this article by SportsPulse dated 2/2/25.

Breaking: Carolyn Kieger Signs Historic Contract Extension as Penn State Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Shaking Up Collegiate Basketball Landscape…

From the article linked above:

".....Kieger, who took the helm of the Penn State program in 2019, has quickly made her mark on the team and the broader Big Ten Conference. Under her leadership, the Nittany Lions have improved their competitiveness, implemented a cohesive team culture, and made strides in recruiting. The extension, which reportedly runs through 2028, solidifies her role in shaping the future of the program and enhancing its national prominence.

The specifics of the contract extension have not been fully disclosed, but it is believed to include significant financial incentives, a longer term commitment than that of many of her peers, and enhanced resources for player development and recruitment. This move is unprecedented in the realm of women’s college basketball, indicating a growing recognition of the value and potential impact of female coaches at the highest levels of the sport.....'

I do not believe that the SportsPulse is a parody account but I cannot find any confirmation of any contract extension beyond the one that she was awarded in 2022.

Kieger has lost the team - literally. How many remain to take to the court next Fall?

Wow.

Coach K's mother must have written the first two sentences of that first paragraph......

There are limited hours in the day and limited resources, if we need to cut back and reallocate time I am glad he is taking it from women's hoops in favor of football, wrestling, etc. I'm more embarrased by our men's hoop team because that should not be so bad. I think we do need to move on from Coach K but if we are not equipped to bring in a high quality replacement a lateral change for more of the same is not worth the effort at this point. At some point it does need to be addressed.

Is there a Rene Porter curse? Bad things seem to happen when you fire winning coaches, Nebraska football has never recovered. This coache's retention is mind baffling. Better to give scholarships to satisfy title 9 and not schedule any games to save wasting expenses.

At some point? Didn't the team end the season with just one conference win?! And, that is with a fairly talented team. Kieger isn't it and it's PKs job to find time in the day to make a coaching change for a major sport...this isn't field hockey.

She might have been worse. Stood on the sideline watching her turnover machine teams with her arms crossed never saying a word or breaking the negative momentum her teams exhibited for long stretches of games.

The last real basketball coach the PSU women had was Portland.

Portland didn't condone woman on woman. Another great move by the BoT.

A 2nd grader could see the obvious need for a coaching change for PSU's women's basketball.

"Managers" are either part of the solution, or part of the problem. And right now Pat Kraft looks like part of the problem....
