Go get him Coach Franklin, the window is now with this roster. Get the best candidate

Best candidate? How do we know? What has Lynn accomplished to distinguish himself?

Not saying he is not the best available, it's just that I don't see something that would make him a must get.

No one ever knows but Lynn is young and has been impressive thus far. Knowles would be great and probably safer but Lynn here could be elite. There's risk with any coach.

Other than the pro coach he's been the best candidate mentioned on this board. So if they can't get a homerun hire from the pros (who can recruit) then it is what it is.

Not suggesting Lynn isn't capable, but what is his claim to being our best option? I'm honestly not being smug, just USC didn't look great defensively this year, better, sure. We sort of abused their zone defense. Did they just not have the jimmies and joes?

He was DC at UCLA the year before and really improved UCLA's defense to where it was the best in the PAC 10 and in the top 20 nationally. That is why he was hired at USC. Now, UCS has never recruited for defense nor has Riley every had a good D (OK or USC). @Richie O posted a listing of his accomplishments over the years but I have no idea where it is...regardless, he is the only guy with experience as a DC in a comparable program with the exception being the guy from Indiana. Others are position coaches that would be moved up to DC and, therefore, unproven.

THanks for this.

Are we ruling out Rossi?
Lynn > Rossi for me but Rossi > Haines

D'Anton Lynn on scheme, versatility, coaching influences and where USC's defense needs to improve

From the article linked above:

'..... “And then as far as coaches who have impacted me, I’ve been very, very fortunate to be exposed to a lot of very good coaches. You know, the first coach offhand, I have to say, Rex Ryan. I played for Rex. I was a scout for Rex. And I was a coach for Rex. So he kind of got me into the league, and a lot of the things that I do, a lot of the way I see the game always comes back to him. Gus Bradley is someone who had a huge impact. I think he’s just a phenomenal teacher — super, super detailed. I was only with him for a year, but that year I was with him I grew a lot. And then, you know, Romeo Crennel, Wink Martindale and Mike Macdonald. Those are the next DCs I was with and I feel like each of them had a different impact on me. And you know, I take a little bit from everywhere I’ve been and, just very, very thankful and grateful to have been exposed to those types of coaches.”'

And I personally place a value on previous players who have now become coaches and can provide an additional bridge from our past successes to our current achievements and objectives.

He did better @ UCLA as THE DC. The defensive talent was more seasoned @ UCLA.

Where does Dan Connor stand in all this? LB Coach? Could he be a candidate for DC?
He needs to actually become a position coach first and serve an apprenticeship if he has a desire to become a DC and possibly head coach. This position is too important to entrust it to a novice; we need somebody who has called defenses and knows which defenses can defeat various types of offenses.

Novice? Not quite

Didn't Vick and DeSean Jackson just get HC roles with no experience?
I'd like experience but it's not required. He's also called plenty of defenses during his playing days.

Maybe not DC but I would think he would be qualified for the LB Coach. Right? He was elite in college, played in the Pros..... the dude made 900 tackles at PSU.

I definitely would be fine with that, but don't we already have a linebacking coach?

His claim is that Franklin supposedly likes him the best as the next PSU DC. And that's what counts as long as Franklin is the PSU head coach. And Lynn has made the defense better, less yards given up per game, where he was DC, which seems to be about all he can do with the jimmies and joes that are on the rosters he inherits.

Yeah, got it. Was honestly just asking, not sure it required a "if franklin likes him who are you to question?" response. I just didn't know much about his background and was hoping to get educated.

I was just listening to Richie's pod cast on the DC candidates and he explained the numbers of how Lynn's defenses improved vs the previous year. Check it out.
