Not suggesting Lynn isn't capable, but what is his claim to being our best option? I'm honestly not being smug, just USC didn't look great defensively this year, better, sure. We sort of abused their zone defense. Did they just not have the jimmies and joes?
IMO, they didn't have the talent. They played a lot of zone because they had to. They wanted to put DA in conflict which only worked part of the time.

His claim is that Franklin supposedly likes him the best as the next PSU DC. And that's what counts as long as Franklin is the PSU head coach. And Lynn has made the defense better, less yards given up per game, where he was DC, which seems to be about all he can do with the jimmies and joes that are on the rosters he inherits.
Does he play an aggressive defense ie Manny Diaz prototype?

I don't care who it is - but if on staff they better be able to handle unbalanced sets better than Allen was. Oregon killed us with them.
It seems not many people (players) on D seem to be terribly upset that, Allen is gone. Also was told today that PS never countered Clemson's offer which I find very interesting.

"....defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn says don’t put his defense in a specific box. It’s going to be versatile.

“I’m not a guy who goes, ‘Hey, this is my scheme. This is what I do.’ It’s all about the players,” Lynn said Tuesday in his first media availability since being hired away from crosstown rival UCLA. “I think you have to be flexible. You have to be able to adapt. And you need a scheme that is built that way.

"At UCLA, we had a very flexible scheme that not only fit our personnel, but allowed us to be a little bit different each week depending on the offense that we were playing.”

The longer this takes the more likely it’s a coach whose team is still playing. And I could absolutely see Golden at PSU.
The defensive coordinator position for the Cincinnati Bengals appears to be down to two final names.

Drae Harris of Sports Illustrated reports that the Bengals are down to Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden. Harris also says he considers Golden to be the favorite for the job and believes that’s who gets the nod.

Graham has been a dark horse around the league several times now. He even interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars head-coaching job this cycle. His numbers from this season aren’t wowing, but certain things show he was able to do more with less talent.

There was quite a bit of talk at the Orange Bowl that Golden wasn't interested in being a head coach.
If that's accurate go get him after Monday and throw enough money at him to make it happen. But that won't keep certain Franklin haters among the alums from pushing him for HC over Franklin. :(

After the Eagles win the Super Bowl in a few weeks, maybe Dunmore's favorite son Vic Fangio would consider whining down his NFL career with a move to a less stressful job in State College. ;)

This DC search is taking too long. Better be a top candidate at this point.
I was hoping we would know more today. Um maybe not. Lots of twists and turns in this one time for a new list? Problem there is the well known talent has either said no thanks after being interviewed, wasn't interested or took other jobs. So, we wait, in limbo.

Kind of agree. I'm hoping for a hire that moves the needle.
I want someone who, first and foremost, can recruit and will be a magnet for talent, because I believe that it doesn't take Robert Oppenheimer to call defenses for big time college football teams like Texas and OSU and even PSU when you're playing overmatched teams in most games.

Ask Brian Kelly about that. His 2023 team was loaded with guys like Daniels, Nabers and Thomas on a prolific offense but they still lost several games because of inept defense. It’s tougher than you think.

But was that because LSU didn't have enough good defensive players or bad coaching? LSU's defense this past season also wasn't spectacular. I'm somebody who believes that it's mostly the players who dictate whether you win or lose, and the coaching is icing on the cake. There's a reason why the same five or six teams have won every National Championship for the past several decades, despite the lesser teams maybe having better coaches.

Agree. I think calling defensive plays is way more difficult than being an OC. So much to account for and you're not defining the terms.

I'm not trying to discount coaching, because it's important. However, PSU has had a new defensive co-ordinator almost every two seasons under Franklin, yet the defense almost always is very good, with the exceptions of when they play a top 5 opponent.

Like I said before, it doesn't take a football genius to call defenses when you have the players at your disposal like OSU and Texas had this past season. Also, I believe that UGA won another National Championship after Lanning left there. Why? Because they had great players.
