psu00: Those 55-10 predictions are a bunch of false bravado. No sane person expects that kind of score, particularly with PSU on the losing end.
Yeah, I've seen a lot of the Trojans this season. It is simply amazing to me how profoundly the change at QB affected the overall performance of that team. Max Browne flat out sucked. He looked lost out there. Sam Darnold came in and took over that team from the get go. Even made their defense play better, althought I'm not sure why.
I thought the article by Zach Helfland of the LA Times (which is linked in another thread on this Board) was pretty good, although it had a couple of glaring mistakes that I noted above, and it hardly surprises me that an LA newspaper gives the Trojans a slight edge. Its subscribers and advertisers are much more likely to be Trojan fans.
The Trojans are very good at the skill positions: Darnold is surprisingly accurate, and composed under pressure, for a kid so young. Adoree Jackson is an elite two way player and a dangerous return guy. Juju Smith-Schuster is a very good, speedy wide receiver, Darreus Rogers is not as good as Smith-Schuster, but he is pretty good as well. They have skill and depth at tight end with Dan Imatorbhebhe, Taylor MacNamara, and Tyler Pettite. (Tight end is their deepest position.)
Their running back Ronald Jones, is very good by most school's standards, but he is nowhere near being in Saquon's class, or in the class of some of the more notable USC running backs.
I think the Lions will outmatch them when they try to run. Their OL certainly does not stink, but there are no current All Americans on their OL. Zach Banner is huge (6-9, 360) but a bit slow. Same for Damien Mama (6-4, 325). Chad Wheeler may be their best offensive lineman. I think they will have real trouble with the speed of the PSU front seven.
Their passing game is more of a worry. They love to get the ball to guys out in space, and sometimes put Adoree Jackson in at WR. Smith-Schuster is tough to stay with on crossing routes or down the sideline. I think the Lions may be well advised to stick with their zone pass coverage and rely on their pass rush and some blitzes.
The Trojan secondary is nails, especially the corners and Safety Iman Marshall. Trace had better not be putting floaters up for grabs against these guys. Cam Smith is a good MLB, and they have speed at outside LB, but their interior D Line is weak by USC's historical standards. Their best DT (Tuikolovatu) is a transfer from Utah who supposedly had difficulty getting playing time for the Utes. I think Saquon might put up some decent numbers on them.
I would put PSU's special teams up against ANYONE. Tyler Davis rarely misses a field goal. Joey Julius puts kickoffs deep in the end zone almost every time, and Gillikin punts it both high and deep, so I believe Adoree Jackson is gonna have limited opportunity to beat PSU on returns.
I think the game is Penn State's to lose. If they play well, they should win comfortably.
