Jim Harbaugh's spring break football trips might not be legal for much longer.

ESPN reported Thursday that "NCAA leadership" is currently looking into eliminating the possibility of football teams holding spring practice sessions off-campus during the school's spring break period.

Harbaugh, of course, took Michigan to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida for four practices during the university's spring break week in late February/early March.

Michigan has not formally announced plans for a trip this year, though Harbaugh was very clear a year ago that he believed the trip was beneficial to his team and would very much be something he'd look into for 2017.

This should have been deemed illegal last year since you can't pay for off campus room and board for non-competition events.

Honest question: How is this different than the northern collegiate baseball teams doing pretty much the same thing?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer. $$$$ for the Southern schools. If more northern baseball teams got better I'd be willing to bet that would end too.....

Eliminating it is a good thing. Just a huge amount of money spent to send 100 players down to Florida for a week. At some point, some fiscal sanity has to come into play.

They practice at high schools? As interrobang pointed out, these are non-competition events; don't northern collegiate baseball teams play games against southern teams?

That hasn't been the case for a few years unless the NCAA just recently changed it back.

Because this specifically say during the off season. Baseball teams travel during the season.

No such rules and never was. Schools for years have been having camps and practices away from campus. Illinois hold preseason camp at an old air force base. Arizona has it at camp Chochise. Pitt for years use to have camp at UPJ. It not that uncommon.

I don't know why people keep making up rules were this was not allowed last year. In reality it was no matter what made up rule people claim.

It gets tricky for baseball, since it's like they have 2 seasons with a break in between.... I guess if Michigan wanted to set up a camp during a bye week during the season it would be fine?

What break? They continue playing games the following weekend in baseball.
