Lowest seed in finals

Every year I try to look for a kid that could make a run into finals that is not a top 4 seed. Some of the thought is what side of the bracket they are on.
My 3 plays this year.
149 has 2 top seeds that have at times struggled in NCAAs. I'll take #5 Kolodizik
184 I'm not sure about Shakur's health in multi matches. I'll take #7 Reenan
197 After watching Moore not show up in big matches. I'll take # 6 Miklus.
Don't get me wrong ,unless I'm in a bracket pool that rewards lower seed picks I would still be taking the higher seeds.
Any sleeper picks for the rest of you?
 
Brock is dark horse, he’s got the tools, just needs to get them out of the box. Of course, he’d have to upset Nick along the way so I cant root for it.
 
Last year there was one wrestler outside of the top 4 seeds to make the Finals. Perry made it from the 15 seed.
 
Not my prediction but I can see Vito Arujau making it in there as an 8 or Ethan Lizak as a 6.

Or if you want to get super bold, Eric Schultz as a 14 !!!
 
I would say Desanto he has already beat RBY and Suriano. If Micic is hurt and he gets a freebie he could make a run.
Lewis if he gets bye Marinelli I think he goes all the way to the finals.
Stoll we no what he is capable of. White is a big monster the exact type of guys that stoll beats. I feel his hardest match would be Parris bc he’s a little lighter on his feet.

#1 Seed: 43 Wrestlers
#2 Seed: 15 Wrestlers
#3 Seed: 10 Wrestlers
#4 Seed: 8 Wrestlers
#5 Seed: 2 Wrestlers
Other: 2 Wrestlers (#13 Seed and #9 Seed)

Average number of #1 Seeds that finish as champ is 5.4 per year, with a high of 7 (2012), and a low of 3 (2014).

Didn't look at "finalists", only champs.

Actually, White is a small heavyweight, very active and light on his feet. The kind of guy that Stall can't beat.

I'm not a good historian but does anyone know if that is up there for lowest NCAA seed to make the finals? I'm sure an unseeded wrestle has done it before.

Looking back it, I think Perry taught us all a valuable lesson, play with fire enough and you'll get burned. The 3 higher seeded guys he beat in Round 2, QF and SF were all guys who notoriously liked to win close matches (SorenEagle, T Shirts, Kolodzik)

He gave Zain a lot better match than I thought. Hell he was close to knotting it up at the end of the 2nd. Though I know it's been said here before but something seemed up with Zain the last 2 rounds, he couldn't grab bonus against Heilmann or Perry (I thought he'd tech or pin both of them). I don't think it was an injury (he just went TF, PIN, TF to get there and just brutalized Lewallen). Almost felt like he hit some kind of wall after 5 hard years of college wrestling with some international wrestling mixed in.

Since and including 1980 (39 years of NCAA Championships), it's happened 10 times (unseeded guys making the finals). Two unseeded guys have won National Championships;

2003 - Carl Fronhofer
1994 - Mark Branch (Champ)
1994 - Laszlo Molnar (interestingly, same weight class as Branch, so two unseeded guys in the finals)
1994 - Andy Reese
1988 - Mike Amine
1988 - Dave Orndorff
1982 - Scott Barrett
1981 - Tony Mantella
1980 - Matt Reiss (Champ)

Side note- Dave Orndorff is the father of the Utah Valley boys.

Except Reenan is said to be hurt.
 
I think for all the complaining about seeds, the strange seeds will create some real excitement.

Roars stats speak for themselves, but this year is giving me a weird vibe.

Here are the guys I consider as the lowest possible seeds who could make a finals run in their respective weight classes

125: 19 seed Zeke Moisey. I don't consider this very likely, but, he's done it before, hasn't he?
133: 11 Tariq Wilson - Micic's length bothered Suriano, and Wilson is both long and talented
141: 15 seed Kaid Brock - so says me and everyone else
149: 12 seed Brady Berge - this is an easy pick. Other than Ashnault, 149 stinks now
157: 11 seed Ke'Shawn Hayes
165: 33 seed Joseph Smith
174: 6 seed David McFadden - 174 is a weight class with very clear demarcations of quality, and most of the lower seeds are unlikely to break through
184: 7 seed Nick Reenan - same as 174. Edit: UNLESS Reenan is hurt. I hadn't heard that.
197: 14 seed Eric Schultz
285: 29 seed Sam Stoll - though it ain't very likely!

Rather amazing to see some former All-Americans seeded as low they are this year.
 
Reenan is not right--a shell of his self a year ago--not sure why.

I just checked my bracket, and there's only one weight where I didn't pick a 3 seed to make the finals (165). I must have a bias against 2 seeds, lol.
 
Zain's finals opponent last year, Ronnie Perry, was a #15 seed from Lock Haven.

I think he took out Sorensen, Tsirtsis, and Kolodzik en route to getting there.

Hope springs eternal.

Moisey is also rather damaged. He had to stop several times for the shoulder that has plagued him since HS. He’s not only not a dark horse. I would not be surprised to see him go 0-2 after the matches I saw him wrestle at BIG’s.

And Keyshawn Hayes....no. Still stalls his way around a mat against similar competition. It is what keeps him off the podium too.

Reenan doesn’t look close to healthy though either
 
Moisey was 0-3 at B1Gs, if one includes the medical forfeit (not a real loss).
