Marinelli vs Joesph Video; Overhooks/Trip Clearly Initiated By Joesph (6:40)

The idea that this was anything other than a counter by The Bull is silly. Marinelli did a fantastic job countering the inside trip for a 6 point move. He was taken down by an inside trip by Cenzo earlier in the match.

Marinelli wasn't able to create any of his own offense. He was outwrestled, but what he did do well was counter the big move attempt, and he won. Cenzo had control of the match and was able to get to his offense just fine against Marinelli. If Cenzo simply outwrestles him, and by that he doesn't go big, then he'll beat him.

This is very similar to Nickal/Martin. This is who Cenzo is, though. I can't blame him for going for the inside trip. He hits it far more often for big results than he misses. He was 1/1 against Marinelli with it, and he had arguably two NF points off of the first one in that match.

So, in conclusion, when a Penn St wrestler wins against a worthy opponent, it’s because he is the better wrestler. When a Penn St wrestler loses to a worthy opponent, he is still the better wrestler but he just made a mistake being aggressive, which is ok, because that’s what Cael teaches.

Marinelli won round 1. Congrats to the young man. A little excuse-making, though reading through this thread there's a good bit of honest assessment. It's a PSU board, so a little (ok, maybe a lot) bias can be expected.

Realistically-speaking, I like Joseph at B1G's...you?

I think the answer your looking for is....Yes.

BWI didnt make the rules, you guys at the HR did.

So again the answer is ....Yes

Like someone said earlier...it is similar to Nickal-Martin....Marinelli is able to beat VJ, but if VJ wrestles smart, it is unlikely (not impossible) to happen again.

I get the bias and to be honest, as an Iowa fan, I am jealous of what Penn St has done the last decade plus. I am a believer in giving credit when it’s due, especially when we are talking about 18-22 year old kids. It started earlier this year after Warner beat Miklus. I saw multiple comments on this board about how Miklus was not the same and it was basically not a great win because Miklus wasn’t going to be as good this year. Obviously those were wrong as he is ranked #4 right now. I have read a lot of posts that gave Marinelli credit but the ongoing analysis of who initiated the move just takes away from a major victory for him. IMO, being a true fan of a great sport like wrestling or any other sport is being able to tip your cap to an opponent when he beats your guy. To answer your question Roar, I think it truly is a toss up. I would give Cenzo the slightest edge just because he’s been through the rigors and up and downs of a div 1 season. Also, if by chance Alex gets the 1 seed and Joseph is 3, they may not meet if Cenzo can’t get by Martinez. Only time will tell. I’m excited for Big Tens and NCAAs. I will reluctantly say, if Nolf is able to make it back at close to full strength, you guys will be really tough to beat and I would predict another national championship for PSU. I just hope Lee, Sorensen, Kemerer, and Marinelli can make at least the semis and hopefully the finals in Cleveland. We just don’t have good enough wrestlers at 133, 141, 174, or 184 to hope for points. Wilcke will have to pick it up to sniff AA and Stoll will hopefully be top 5 or 6. That puts Iowa probably around 3-5 range depending on how Michigan, Missouri, NC State, and Lehigh perform.

Marinelli has a wide base/stance and a low center of gravity! IMHO that is why Vincenzo could not execute the throw. He had to step too wide and AM just sagged his hips and lowered his level. Well done on his part!

Concur...and I don't think VJ will go there again. Thankfully the lesson was learned during a dual vice the NCAAs... :)

The dynamic here is not limited to the VJ/AM match or to PSU wrestlers (or homer fans). The result of this match is analogous to the Eierman win over Diakomihalis at the South Beach Duals in December. Both matches featured excellent wrestlers, but one wrestler in each was clearly more dominant, had the match well in hand right up until a careless move at the end, and has supreme confidence that he will win the next encounter. The victors of those two matches, on the other hand, will undoubtedly be going into a rematch hoping for another careless move or other stroke of good fortune to get them past their superior foe for a second time.

I give credit to Marinelli for not being behind by so much in the 3rd period that a fluke 6 point move could get him the victory.

How's that?

:D

Tommy Rowland’s has the funniest take on Cenzo. Him and Askren were commenting on how Cenzo is so damned cocky with the overhooks and How he stands straight up with them and walks his opponent around like a “clown”. They both gave Cenzo a lot of respect but it was a funny thing as I’ve had that same take but couldn’t put it in words.

PS—Askren said he’d bet $1000 that cenzo wins 10 of next 10 vs Bull. I wouldn’t go that far but these guys take on the match we’re much like many of us here and they not PSU homers

That was a great podcast. Nice breakdown of Coon/Snyder.

Well, he was number 2 in the 2016 recruiting class, so there really isn't much coaching to be done. ;)
I started re-reading "A Season on the Mat" about Iowa's 96-97 season. In the book Gable talks about taking lots of shots, criticizes one wrestler for only taking 2 or 3 shots the entire match. Wonder what he thinks of the state of Iowa wrestling now. Stoll did not take a shot. Marinelli took I believe one legitimate shot besides the bear hug.

To be fair, Bowan and Gunther did not have enough time to actually take a shot.

Thanks for the response, and the conversation. Knowing your loyalties, great post. :):)

Seems reasonable.
Just curios: How many times have you advised your homies to this thought on HR??
I see a lot of "9 outta 10" over there minus the credit due to opponents.. Just sayin

About what I would expect. Just curious, if Marinelli wins the next match up, how many of you will give him credit then?

As he demonstrated earlier in the match Joseph has a lot more then an inside trip. I think that this match will have him focusing on his other takedowns just as it did with Nickal in his matches with Martin.

I concur. In the future, if he has a lead like that against one of the other power guys (and clearly Joseph is definitely no slouch in the power game), I'm thinking he will, as you said, focus on other TD efforts vice going for a potential big move that could fail. Should be fun watching Joseph, Marinelli and Massa going at it the next couple years.

I concur. Though I clearly wanted Marinelli to win and am glad he did, I couldn't believe how slow the ref was at starting the count on that TD you referred to. Seemed like Alex was on his back for at least a three or four count, but the ref didn't get into position and initiate his count until Alex had been there for a couple secs. I was surprised Cael and company didn't throw in the brick to challenge the NF points; just looked at the video again today (link below); it was definitely 2 NF points at the very least unless I'm missing something. Check out the video...replay for that TD starts 11 seconds into the video. Alex was on his back for a while...

I agree, I got a four count myself, but at least two back points.

Careful. Beetlejuice will be around to tell you that you never wrestled.

Well he would be wrong, though only in junior high, i went skiing in high school, and my senior year the team had three individual champs and the team championship, so they did not miss my services. I also did help coach through 8 years of elementary wrestling between my two sons. But, PSU fans only discovered wrestling when Cael came to town.

I thought it was 2NF myself, but you don't always get calls. In this instance Cenzo didn't. That's how it works in every sport, though.
