Match Notes for Michigan & MSU duals

Nick Lee not listed as a possible 141 option. I assume they can decide right up until weigh-ins? Not sure how it works, anyone have insight on this? Thanks

Interesting to note that for Michigan, the Match Notes indicate:

165 #5 Logan Massa So. St. Johns, Mich./St.Johns 9-1

However, for the Michigan equivalent of PSU's Match Notes, they list the following:

165 Logan Massa Jr./So. St. Johns, Mich. (St. Johns)

or

Reece Hughes Fr./Fr. Brighton, Mich. (Hartland)

They can weigh him in, dress him, introduce him and take it right up to the start of 141. His shirt is effectively still on until he takes the mat as a competitor.

The Match Notes are not the final word with regards to the lineup. They generally follow what CS indicates in his weekly Media day, on Tuesday. He indicated yesterday that Gardner was under consideration for 141, and that Cortez would be out for some time. In that context, listing Cortez may be a bit of a leap.

In terms of the actual rules, the team does not have to actually decide who they'll send out to the mat until it's match time for 141 lbs. They can weigh in multiple individuals at a weight, and as long as they meet that weight they are all eligible to wrestle at that match. They can then send all those that make weight out to warm up, etc.

What are the rules if he travels out there with the team? I know to compete unattached at tournaments they have to pay their own way, are they allowed to travel with the team for duals?

I don't know the rule for sure. But they pulled Halls RS in Iowa last year, and we did not know it until the match. So I am assuming that Lee can travel with the team.

It seems to me that if you were going to #freethelee, it would be best in a home environment ... maybe Purdue? No need to put in a hostile environment like Hall last year.

the team is allowed to pay for his travel if they are taking him as a possible competitor. If he does not compete, the fact that PSU payed for his travel does not impact his redshirt.

I'll be surprised if Lee takes the mat. I just don't think Cael would ask Gardner to cut to 141 then not wrestle him.

Then again, I could be all wet.

anyone following the possible rule change in football to allow RS to compete up to 4 times without burning the RS?

Would be interesting to see how that would shake out for the other sports and would apply to wrestling specifically.

I don’t think the PSU Match Notes ever listed “or Mark Hall” for 174 last year for the Iowa dual @ CHA.

Didn't he travel to Lehigh? I was there and I thought he weighed in...

Seems like he weighed in for Lehigh too....but it doesn’t really matter. We sometimes weigh In RS wrestlers to keep an in season feel even though they won’t wrestle. I would expect Lee to keep weighing in for every match, or close to it.

It is clear, even with the predictions of our NCAA demise that the coaches want him to RS and use Cortez. Otherwise they would not have Gardner move down weight to wrestler. Gardner also has to actually make weight as well. What was his last weight at the last weigh in? That matters.

This is only conjecture, but based on when I played baseball many moons ago. I don't believe a redshirt is actually official/declared until after the season. I believe the info showing the requirements were met for the red shirt to either the league or NCAA. I can't imagine traveling with the team and not participating would violate those requirements, but can't say for sure.

In my case, coach came to me at a certain point and said he wanted to redshirt me, which would mean I couldn't play in any games beyond that point. I can't recall if I traveled with the team beyond that point or not.

Yep, clear as mud. :p

Agree, if Lee doesn't wrestle this weekend we can infer that Cael is going all-in with Cortez.

A lot of us don't like his close-to-the-vest style, but the kid is 11-1. He could match Jimmy G's production from last year.

just don't think he projects. he has not looked stellar to this point. otoh, maybe they feel better all around with kuhn at 25. remains to be seen.

FYI, Penn State is only allowed to take 15 guys on the road for conference meets (and only because they are wrestling two road duals this weekend...if the Michigan meet were alone, they could only bring 13).

Ah yes, there are the travel limits. Didn't NW run into problems at a PSU dual in the past few years where they had to forfeit 1 or 2 weights due to a combo of injuries and travel roster limits?

Last year, they had to forfeit both 149 and 174 at Penn State. That said, Northwestern has by far the strictest full roster limits in the Big Ten (I believe the 22 they have on the roster this year is the highest in quite a while), so I would believe it was more that than travel roster limits.

That doesn’t particularly warm the heart. Jimmy scored, what, 4/4.5 and 1.5 were because he got lucky getting matched against a clearly injured opponent who had killed him at Big10s.

And our competition wasn’t nearly as fearsome as tOSU is this year.

Come tournament time, Lee and Rasheed need to be in the lineup. Their bonus points are needed and both will go as far if not further than Cortez or Cassar. With OSU’s lineup being so deep, bonus points will be huge for PSU from as many weight classes as possible. Plus, I’m concerned with Nevills. Did not look good at the Scuffle and thought he was struggling with Kids before the Scuffle. Think we could see a drop in points from the Heavyweight position so 141 and 197 will be key.

I don't disagree.
