Wrestling Media Day: Cael Sanderson clarifies situation at 157-pounds and more

Yeah Kasak would have to RS. Then transfer out because next year doesn't look much better for him. SVN still at 149, Facundo and Duke at 157. And I would be shocked if ever makes 141 again.
Calling Mr Taylor, some programs are going to get some really quality kids.

I don't think kasak will red shirt, way to much talent in the pipeline. Facunda and kasak will battle it out. Loser to the portal next year unless facunda wants to be a free style only guy at the NLWC.

No one is writing off anyone. We're just speculating about how to fit like 9 hammers into 5 spots. Someone isn't going to make it, but they're all still hammers.
Except the general thought on this string is that Facundo is more likely. I find that a bit odd considering a weight cut and how each one looked last time we saw each one on a folkstyle mat: Facundo unable to pull the offensive trigger and going home early from NCAA while Kasak had a massive rip to the Podium. Feels like Kasak is the winner in the lineup.

I think you are going to be surprised by the version of Alex you see on the mat this season.

I’m with ya. I get that Freestyle and Folk are different animals. But Alex took Jordan Burroughs down while he was trying to make an Olympic team. He also more or less handled Levi Haines. Those data points are >0.

Kasak is a beast too—tenacious as they come, and that shouldn’t be undervalued for postseason success. But I’m ready to buy into the idea that Facundo is ready to win a title.

I think the version of Alex you are thinking about was pretty banged up and nowhere close to 100% nearly 20 months ago. I'm willing to see how it plays out, but I believe you are underestimating Alex.

If Alex is the 157, he'll almost certainly be on a Brady Berge like pitch count. He'll need a lot of random weekends off IMO and I have no idea how he won't crash in a 2 day weigh in tournament, let alone 3. Guess trust in the coaches.

If it is Alex and he is on a pitch count, I would expect some combination of Sealey's 5 dates (If he can make 157 idk), Connor Pierce and Dylan Evans covering those weekends off

I don't think many people (myself included) thought that a sucked down Facundo would win the spot over Kasak until Mineo posted that they had a wrestle-off and Facundo won. Obviously, that's not the end of the competition, but if he's winning in the room right now, that is something that is not insignificant.

Mineo also posted that Davis wrestled Nagao.

And he could have... Just because Nagao is recovering from an injury doesn't necessarily mean he isn't wrestling. Willie said he was wrestling injured over the summer and was losing to Davis.
At least one insider with direct ties to the program is saying Nagao didn't wrestle. It's obvious somebody is trolling Mineo with fake results.

Also Cael picked kasak for the all star classic, backups are now wrestling at the all star classic?
The selection was made months ago. Mineo posted about the purported wrestle-off this week, so perhaps Cael's expectations were more in line with ours until they got into a quasi-real competition?

If the cut is so tough for him that he will struggle with consecutive weekends or 2 and 3 day tournaments, there is no way he'll be the starter, regardless of what he can do in a one-time wrestle-off or individual matches. Cael structures the entire season around nationals results. There is no way he'll use a guy who will be at a significant disadvantage in the national tournament even if he would be the best guy for the dual season.

Was about to say this… if there’s a “pitch count” he won’t be the starter

Per yesterday, Cael didn't think Levi would be able to be effective at 157 the last 2 years. Sometimes you just have be patient and see how things play out.
When Facundo doesn't have the option to redshirt, it doesn't matter if the starter's job gets taken from him in March. They can get Kasak enough matches wrestling at Opens as unattached so that he doesn't get a horrible seed at NCAA's.

If Facundo is on par with Kasak he is definitely ready to challenge for a title. My concern is the cut, but Levi struggled with that cut at the beginning of last season and owned it at the end.

What are you basing the struggle comment on? His early issues in having close bouts were related to a minor injury, not weight cut.
