Mike Kahn

wow. that's sad. haven't seen him since hs but we were pals back then. i heard he went on to be a boxer.

twice i would have hit him in the next round in hershey but i lost the match before - to andy migyanko in '96 semi's and to harley anderson in '97 quarters. he won both years. in '97 he won a crazy rideout match in the finals over Troy Minarovic who i beat the week before in regionals. I think Greg Jones was in the bracket that year, too.

Sad day for me. I only wrestled in 7th and 8th grade at Swatara Jr. High in Harrisburg, but Mike was on my team both years. In 8th grade, Mike and I were a tandem at 100/105. Coach Wolf would let Mike take out the better wrestler and I would take the other guy. He went on to Harrisburg High and I went to CD East, but I always followed his career. Mike never grew after 7th grade. He wrestled 100 from 7th - 12th grade. You could tell from the day he stepped on the mat in 7th grade that he was a different animal. I remember the stories of him running on the weekends to train. One specific time coach Wolf told us that Mike ran from his home in Steelton down to Elizabethtown. The rest of us were probably watching football on TV and he was out busting his ass in 8th grade.

I'll never forger the announcer always saying Mike Kahn this is your last warning to report to mat # whatever in hershey. He had lost in the 1st round of states and wrestled back to take 3rd. Great kid and awesome athlete.

The match with Migyanko in the finals may have been even better. He had a showmanship about him.

i think that's right. can't quite recall the details. something like that though. i think Wire was only up at 275 b/c of some friendship (that was what i heard back in the day). b/c his SR year he went down.

idk. i'm getting old.

Sad, going from memory here but that is 3 kids that I know of that won that day but have recently died. Shapert and Cridge being the others.

Coy Wire is definitely on the best small guys at heavy at Hershey list, but my all time great was Matt Feast. He looked like he wouldn’t have to cut at 189. Once 215/220 came in it got rid of all of that, but I remember some matches with Feast and thinking there is no way and next thing you know he was taking the guy down.

yes, he did. i think it was his sr. year. i'm not sure but that definitely happened one of the years he won it.
Not even my favorite 103 pound champ holding a new baby... mine is Billy Spencer (all 4 8 of him) who beat a kid from an unnamed school near NJ border and then went and grabbed his child.

Coy had quit wrestling to focus on lifting to put on weight for football. He had gotten injured wrestling in the summer and didn't want to risk his Stanford football career. Halfway through the season coach convinced him to come back out. He was well under 200 but he wouldn't wrestle 189 due to his friendship with Heckard and wouldn't go lower due to football so 275 it was.

After watching the Wire-Gilliam match, I was curious whether Wire won as a senior and came across an article that Gilliam passed in 2007.
