I am really happy that Moorhead was able to get a head coaching job. He deserves it. I hope he doesn’t take too many coaches from PSU and, assuming he doesn’t, MSU will be my favorite team in the SEC.

We all know the SEC is a great conference with schools that are almost all ‘football crazy’. If you would rank the MSU job, you could say it’s anywhere for 20-35th best job in the country. For this reason alone, it seems like a no brainer that Moorhead would take this job. Then, I watched his press conference today and read a few articles. If his goal is to move the program forward and improve on the current status quo, it’s going to be extremely difficult. Moorhead was asking players their ring size and saying that he’s there to win championships. Well, if he thought the B1G East was tough, welcome to the SEC West. You could make an argument that there isn’t a program that MSU is better than. Sure, Mississippi will probably go on sanctions and Arkansas has been bad as of late, but look at MSU’s history. This past year, 8-4, 4-4 is about as good as it gets. Mullen has elevated the program. They did win 10 games with Prescott and 9 during another season, both of which they were unable to win the SEC West. Their last appearance in the SEC Championship game was 1998 and before Mullen, they were mostly a bottom feeder, in the SEC, for decades.

I suppose the point of the matter is that this past year may be MSU’s ceiling. I don’t think Moorhead is a dropoff from Mullen, but is he an upgrade? Even if he is, are they going to be able to recruit at a level of an Alabama/LSU ever?

I wonder if Moorhead could’ve obtained a position with a higher ceiling than MSU. It doesn’t seem likely that he will make waves in the SEC. Hopefully, I’m wrong as I am questioning if this was the best long term fit. Some have said this is a stepping stone position to get to an elite program. If that’s the case, maybe it’s a good move. Time will tell.
