"Easily"? I'm not so sure. Eight point difference between him and Yianni. Pretty close to a tossup.

Not sure how they didn't give this to Yianni unanimously. I mean, he had a torn ACL. We know we can project that he would have bonused his way through if not injured. obviously would have been more dominant. ;);););)

This made me laugh, but, joking aside, how the hell does Yianni not win it? He had nearly twice as many wins on the season as Lee, had a win over a two-time champ and two wins over a two-time finalist. Then he went out and won the title on one leg. Spencer lost to Ronnie Bresser.

That is a very impressive group of wrestlers. Holy smokes. Very good company Nick is in.

Congrats to Spencer! Well deserved. So much for being a weak 113 pound kid wrestling men at 125. Beast!

Either wrestler is a worthy number 1......but my vote would also go to Spencer. Pinned a former National champ in the Semis and then knocks off an undefeated in the finals that was never really in doubt. Both victories made PSU fans cheer :). Both true freshman were outstanding. Nick Lee coming back the way he did after getting pinned in his first match at NCAAs was very special in its on way. Three true freshman that really shined. Hidlay was impressive all year. Remember......he was ranked behind Mason Manville coming out of High School. Also...big props to Tariq for taking out Pletcher. 7 impressive freshman that will continue to be fun to watch.

Spencer and Yianni is kind of like splitting hairs, IMO, but if I had to choose I gotta give this to Yianni. Yianni had more wins and less losses (Although Tan Tom does not think those things matter apparently) And when you consider Yianni won a title in college with the ACL tear; whereas Spencer couldn't win a highschool championship with an ACL injury...so Yianni 1A, Spencer 1B. Both will be fun to watch moving forward.

I kind of doubt either one of them are losing much sleep over this honor, one way or another. Pretty sure both are wearing Jordan Burroughs' special eyewear, and have been for some time now. Great time to be a wrasslin' fan in Happy Valley AND these United States....

Per the article, a portion of which I copied/pasted below, it's the result of voting by 10 individuals, total. I personally like the selection, but with so few voting, bias creep can set in, and no one here knows the loyalties of the 10 that voted. It would be far better with more "voters", and a nice cross-section that takes out loyalties. In the scheme of things, not too big a deal.

This award, presented each year since 2006 to best college freshman wrestler in all divisions for his/her college wrestling performance during the 2017-18 season, is based exclusively on the balloting of writers and executives at InterMat prior to the announcement of other national wrestling awards. Each staff member is asked to select five freshman wrestlers and rank them from first to fifth. Point values are assigned to each placement, ranging from one point to a wrestler listed fifth on a voter's ballot, up to nine points for a first-place vote.

Spencer Lee was listed at the top of seven ballots out of 10 submitted by InterMat staffers, for a total of 84 votes. The other freshman who received first-place votes was Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell University, with three first-place votes for a total of 76 to place second in the overall balloting

I like the book reading, but goal setting for 2nd graders? Sounds like the time we had our *genius* management team plan a performance review cycle "activity" for take your kids to work day. I took my kids in, but I didn't let them near those loonies.

Maybe the goal was to be able to read independently and Nick was trying to inspire the children to achieve that goal? But I do hear you, to much intensity can be lost on 7 yr olds...

Or absorbed completely and be life changing.
