NCAA Brackets and discussion

Davis' path -- assuming no major upsets:
- R1: pigtail winner of 32 Joyce (Brown) vs 33 Lujan (MSU)
- R2: 16 Peterson (Elite) or 17 Ungar (Cornell)
- Qtrs: 8 Figs or 9 McKee
- Semis: 4 Ramos, 5 Volk, or 12 Noto

A lot fewer landmines in the bottom half.

Mitchell has the Golden draw. Starocci, Brooks, Kerk don’t matter. Mekhi got screwed.

Levi tough draw, Nagao worst draw, 125 everything is crazy, Bernie good draw. Beau tough 2nd round match with Matthews. Kasak ok draw

Can’t wait

Do not love Beau's draw at first glance, nor do I love Levi's and Carter at 9 seems to punish others more than Carter...
This is when bad seeding rears its head….other punished by not considering who Carter actually is. 6 was actually the proper spot as it would put the people in his path as might have been otherwise.

Nagao's path:

First impressions:

Daton Fix got a lifetime achievement reward in getting the 1 but he’s got a tough round 2 scrap.

Nagao, rough road.

Prefer not to have Matthews round 2 for Beau.

174 feels like a bunch of bureaucrats were tasked with punishing a guy for sitting out without fully understanding the consequences of it being unfair to the 1.

Everything else, blah. I like everyone else’s draw. Not 125 tbh but that’s just a trip to Vegas anyway. No good or bad for anyone.

Levi's path:
- R1: pigtail winner between 32 Wilcox (anOSU) vs. 33 Stampoulos (Buffalo)
- R2: 16 Travis (OKST) or 17 Mauller (Missouri)
- Qtrs: 8 Robb or 9 Lewan
- Semis: 4 Scott (NC State) or 5 Downey (N. Iowa)

Could be worse: Shapiro got Chittum in R2.

After taking another look at this one, I don't think it's as bad as I first thought.

Carter's path:
- R1: 24 Sparks (Goofers)
- R2: 8 Kemp (Cal Poly)
- Qtrs: 1 Lewis
- Semis: 4 Griffith or 5 Conigliaro or 12 Kennedy

Laughable that Welsh and Wolak got the 6 and 7 over Carter. NCAA misses an easy opportunity for a champ vs. 3x champ final on national TV.

Don’t like Davis or Nagao’s, don’t mind any of the others. Lewis got screwed.

Truax's path:
- R1: 27 Pine (Clarion)
- R2: 11 Hawks (Missouri)
- Qtrs: 3 Plott (OKST) or 14 Foca (Cornell) -- probably Plott, Foca might be injured
- Semis: 2 Salazar

Pinto got the 5 ahead of Bernie despite last weekend's H2H. LOL.

Tony Negron got the 31, opens with Salazar. Bummer.

Great work as usual El. Thank you for this.

Seeding is almost entirely based on the matrix. When guys don’t have an RPI (10%) or finish low at their conference tourney (15%) they are going to automatically be seeded lower than they should ie Carter Starocci. There will always be questionable seeds because very little subjectivity is used.

Last season, championship brackets only, there were 66 upsets by seed in the ten weight classes. That's 20% of all bouts. Lot's of very good and great wrestlers at the tournament, generally saw only one head scratcher.

The only seeding of the dozen or so I looked at by criteria that doesn't make sense is Starocci. Yes, no RPI and inj. def. x 2 didn't help, so the seed appears to be "by the book". However, this year the NCAA added some subjective measures to keep something like this from happening. One subjective criteria; "Number of Injury default or medical forfeits wins/losses" comes to mind. Not concerned for Carter at this point, it's more about the other guys in the bracket, especially Kemp & Lewis

if i’m not mistaken the top 2 seeds at 125 are true freshman who weren’t even ranked in the top 25 of the class lol

This was added for 2024 so "subjectivity" could be used, but only when needed;

SUBJECTIVE CRITERIA
The committee may also consider the following subjective measures to supplement established selection and seeding criteria:
● Bad Losses
● Outside the top 30 CR and/or 30 RPI
● Conference Champion
● Performance in last five matches
● Number of Injury default or medical forfeits wins/losses
● Best quality win
● Wrestler availability (injured or medically unable to compete)

Ironically, isn’t Starks the guy who “ended” Carter’s winning streak? I believe that was his first injury default.
