NCAAs at Madison Square Garden...

I know that I will be one of the 4 loudest people in that section along with 171 of my new best friends! Can't wait!!!

I know that there will be 175 PSU fans in the Madison Club. Rented out by the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club. That is directly behind Section 111,112,113.
It's the Penn State Wrestling Club, and the section wasn't rented out...these are reserved seats, like any other, just close to the action.

I stand corrected. Penn State Wrestling Club. We will have access to the Madison Club according to the info I received
"Good morning,
Our final count is 159 Madison Club Seats purchased by Penn State Wrestling Club members. The remaining 17 seats are expected to be sold to Cornell or Rutgers.
The tickets will come to the Penn State Wrestling Club for distribution. When I am told when to expect the tickets, I will then contact you for distribution.
.
You will be able to purchase alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks in the Madison Club. Food however will need to be purchased at the concession stands one level up or down from the Madison Club."
The point I was making was that there will be a lot of PSU fans in that area.

Would of been NICE to receive a ticket application to purchase NCAA tickets!!!! And yes, I do donate to the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club on a yearly bases!! Maybe, I'm not in the "CLICK" so to speak! And NO, I have not made a donation to the club this year, and still don't know if I will. Poor club management to overlook your donors.

As said previously, the Madison Club seats were made available through the Penn State Wrestling Club, not the NLWC. To get an application for NCAA tickets, you need to be a member of the Nittany Lion Club. However, it doesn't sound like you're currently a member of any of the three.

Sorry for naïveté but are ncaa tix really hard to obtain unless one is well connected? I'm a Rutgers season tix holder (psu alum and fan but I live too close to ru not to be a tix holder). Anyway, starting tomorrow I'll have opportunity to buy a pr of ncaa tix via ru, which I won't be able to use due to family commitment.

I got the same offer from Rutgers as a soon-to-be ex-season ticket holder. If you are a season ticket holder for a program that doesn't usually get support at Nationals, I think it's pretty easy to get tickets. At PSU, though, it isn't. Plus, the NCAA seems to shortchange Penn State in their allotments on a regular basis.

I need 4 tix for the ncaa if anyone has any extra. When the application came I didn't think I would be able to go and now I can. I have the hotel arrangements made all I need is tix. Email me if anyone has any extra please fisher3580@gmail.com.
Thank you.

To be honest, if your goal is to be in the arena, show up at MSG before any session and you'll be able to find tickets on the streets. Many all-sessions tickets should be available on Thursday. For members of the PSWC, there are typically tickets (in the PSU section) posted in the members only section in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

@Gray52......Well.........let me just say, I am a football season ticket holder, which means I donate to the nittany lion club, so I got that covered! I also, donate to the penn state wrestling club, so I got that covered! I also, donate to PSU alumni association! Ive sent emails to the appropriate contacts at the psu wrestling club, and they just kept forwarding my emails to someone else, and tell me they will be in contact with me. Piss poor!! They sure as hell want there donations when it comes due though. Oh well, maybe i'll email Cael, I'm sure he appreciates the donations.

Thanks I forgot about the tix exchange on the wrestling club Web site. Worst case we will just go and get tix out side. Just like to sit in psu sec if possible.

The Penn State Wrestling Club is not in charge of NCAA tickets and has no control over those tickets, the PSU Ticket Office does. Have you contacted them? If you are a NLC member and a PSUWC member you should have gotten an application for NCAA tickets way back in the summer.

Lioncrebs... So I guess I should have asked if you're a wrestling season ticket holder? If not, I don't think you'd get an application to purchase for sports you don't currently hold season tickets for. From my understanding, PSU's allotment of tickets at nationals doesn't even cover the season ticket holders requests, so I assume that's why non season ticket holders do not get applications?

I think having Nationals in NYC is a dumb decision. No one follows wrestling there, there are no food options close to the Garden and it's too damn expensive. We should have it in St Louis every year! Failing that, have it in Des Moines, Oklahoma City or Kansas City in alternate years.

would agree with the exception of midwest locations. Lots of venues in the Northeast - Philly was good, you have Pittsburgh, DC area, even into Ohio...

You actually see this type of argument on various boards from the Midwest Wrestling Mafia.

Philly will be even better next time because they built a huge entertainment/eating complex next to the arena. That said bitching about food options nearby in Philly was ridiculous. You've got a really short cab ride to the wonder that is the Reading Terminal Market.

Pittsburgh would be great of course. With the surprising number of teams in NC, Charlotte might make a good spot as well. Spread the wealth. Hell, how about Phoenix in mid-March. Perfect time to go there for sun-starved wrestling fans

The problem is those cities/arenas have to be interested and willing to pony up the money. I say this every time this discussion comes up. The NCAA does NOT care about what is good or best for the fans. They only care about making the most amount of money they can.

...the Iowas and Okies are upset because they can't commute daily to the NCAAs?..

...now they can feel the same outlay of $$$s we experience to go to St. Louis, Des Moines, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, etc., etc., on a 4 out of 5 year basis...;).

If you want to argue about lack of a local fan base or that NYC is expensive, fine. So be it.

However, anyone claiming that there are no food options near the Garden is either insane or has never been there.

Wrestling is starting to pop up more in more in FL. Most everyone is familiar with the team at Brandon...but, many high schools are putting more resources into teams.
I am bias - but, I think Tampa would be a great place to host Nationals some year. We host a lot of NC events; and everything is well run. Only real downside is lack of public transportation (rail)

If the NYC Iranian and Russian communities show up like they did for the exhibition in Grand Central a couple of years ago, MSG Nationals will be very well attended.... and loud. Perhaps the NLWC has extra money in the "special" slush fund for tickets and Cael t-shirts? :)

That was exaggeration for effect, Manatree. There are a lot of rough, tough wrestling fans from the hinterlands afraid of their own shadow when it comes to the Big Apple.

Everyone knows there's a great Sbarro's right near the Garden :D

I'm looking forward to seeing NCAA's at MSG. So far, I like Philadelphia the best (proximity and expense are factors), followed by Oklahoma City then Saint Louis. With the increasing interest in wrestling in Texas, Dallas would be cool along with Phoenix. Moving it around the country makes sense to me, it gives all of us an opportunity to get a financial break every few years if it's near us, no matter which team is ours.

And market / promote the sport to new fans! Occasionally moving the NCAAs around promotes the sport in upcoming areas. I would also not sleep on the quality of NJ/NY wrestling!

I didn't know about the Sbarro's. :(

In fact, what I know about Manhattan is pretty thin so I'm counting on some locals to point us to the best eating and watering holes in the MSG area, but not to close to MSG as those will be jammed.

A little history...
Until about 15 years ago, the NCAA Wrestling Championships were held at college campuses. In fact, it was held at the BJC in 1999.

The first sellout, I believe, was in Omaha, NE in 2010, but then Philly set attendance records in 2011, broken by St. Louis in 2012. I believe every Championship since has been a sellout, so NYC will be the 7th year in a row.

The choice of Des Moines, IA, was met with much frustration in 2013, because it was a smaller venue, but the choice had been made several years prior, when sellouts were rare. Some of you may have been there. While there was plenty of complaints prior, there were TONS of tickets available at the arena each day.

In late 2013, the NCAA announced the 8 Finalists for the 2015-2018 Championships. They were; New York City (MSG), Louisville (KFC Yum! Center), Cleveland (Quicken Loans Arena), Kansas City (Sprint Center), Pittsburgh (Consol Energy Center), Philadelphia (Wells Fargo Center), St. Louis (Scottrade), and Oklahoma City (Chesapeake Energy Arena). I am also aware that Atlanta, Boston, and a couple others made bids, and St. Louis made an offer to be the permanent host of the Championships.

This process will probably repeat itself next year, as potential host cities will make bids for the 2019-2022 National Championship.

One note about St. Louis, the host of 6 of the last 12 National Championships, and host in 2017...do the math, they've been getting about 50% of the championships since they moved off of college campuses.

Checked StubHub, which isn't always an accurate barometer so far in advance of an event, but tickets comparable to my own are going for double face value and higher, which was $235. Good sign for the sport, bad sign if you don't have tix.

As a native New Yorker, and East Coast wrestling fan, I'm thrilled to have this great event here.

That said, my impression is the tickets are exorbitant.

On Stubhub, last week, I paid close to 3G's for two all session tickets in the 200 level, center.

The last time I attended this event was in Philly, and before that, in Albany, & I don't recall the tickets being so expensive.

Having been 15 years in a row I can tell you that no matter what tickets are going for online ahead of the event you will be able to scalp them on Day 1 for face value or less. It's a factor of Supply and Demand. There is always a supply from people that couldn't make it but the demand is low as no one is willing to make hotel, airfare, car rental, etc. plans without tickets in hand.

Curious to know if you called the PSU ticket office and what the results were? As I said before contacting the volunteers that run the wrestling club should get you some guidance of who to contact but there isn't much they can do directly to get you tickets.

Been going to the NCAA tournament for almost 30 years straight. 2013 was the first time we could not get tickets through the usual channels (PSU, ticket office at venue) because of demand and size of the venue. We found the best approach was to contact ticket offices at other nearby universities with less of a wrestling following and get on their waiting list. Lots of parents reserve tickets but then give them up when their kid doesn't qualify. In 2013 we were on lists at Edinboro, Maryland, Lehigh, and a few other schools in PA. After the qualifying tournaments were over, we got calls from pretty much all of them with tickets available for purchase.

I would do this before overpaying on StubHub every time.

On the surface I love the idea. Nationals is the same time as Spring Training. Having been to Phillies spring training in Clearwater a couple times, doing both in 1 trip would be awesome. Three teams (NY, PHL, Toronto) are right there, and another 8 within 1.5 hrs. Awesome weather -- sunny shorts/t-shirt weather instead of sleeting Full Eskimo.

The downsides: cost and availability. Since it's both spring training baseball and college spring break season, flights and hotels are expensive. Hotels are also in short supply. Tampa has hosted the Super Bowl, so there are probably enough rooms for spring break + spring training + nationals concurrently, but maybe not where people would want to be. Fans would definitely be dispersed all over the region -- with the causeways, that could mean 45-min drives or longer to/from the arena.

In fact, what I know about Manhattan is pretty thin so I'm counting on some locals to point us to the best eating and watering holes in the MSG area, but not to close to MSG as those will be jammed.

Not a native, but here are my thoughts.

Walk over to Ninth Ave and head north. Ninth Ave from teh 30s - 50s has a remarkable variety of restaurants, both it types of food and price ranges.

Also, east to Koreatown which is centered on 32nd st between Sixth & Fifth can be interesting.

As for specifics close to the Garden:

Pizza Suprema
A really good place to grab a couple of quick slices. I recommend their upside down slice. It's a square, thick Sicilian style pie with the sauce on top of the cheese.

Salumeria Biellese
Doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is a great Italian sandwich shop. Real quality meats and cheeses, many made in house, and sliced to order. They also have hot sandwiches as well. They run about $8 for a six inch hoagie style, but they are packed and it's all quality products. This is no run of the mill Jersey Mike's or Subway..

Uncle Nick's
Nice, casual sit down Greek place. Does a good job on the standards. A bit smaller than their other location up in Hell's Kitchen, but this one is just 2 or 3 blocks south of the Garden.

A few websites to help you do some scouting.

Seious Eats is a pretty good foodie site.

Yelp is good for photos of various places. Take any reviews from an open, anonymous site with a grain of salt.

Menupages, while not as popular as yelp it is really good for looking at menus to get an idea of the range of dishes and prices.
