NCAAs, Round 1 ... post comments here as replies ***

That one really hurts the Hawkeyes

a long way to go for Telford now.

4 teams advance 7 to R2, PSU, Ohio St., Mizzou, and Okla. St. ...

by "7 to R2" I mean 7 wrestlers to Round 2 of the Championship bracket. Ohio St., Mizzou, Iowa, Michigan, and Illinois entered the tournament with 10 guys. Ohio State went 7-3, Mizzou went 7-3, Iowa went 6-4, Michigan went 6-4, and the Illini went 6-4.

it was ... my bad ...

I may have heard a 6 point victory and transposed that to a 6-3 victory.

thanks,

Tom

Team Scores at end of R1 ...

I'm numbering based on how many points they have. If they are tied, I'm listing the team that has the higher maximum potential score as the higher team.

1. Ohio State - 13.5
2. PSU - 11.5
3. Cornell - 11
4. Mizzou - 11
5. Iowa - 10
6. Michigan - 10
7. Nebraska - 10
8. Oklahoma State - 9
9. Virginia Tech - 9
10. Illinois - 8.5
11. Minnesota - 7
12. Wisconsin - 7
13. Lehigh - 6
14. Oklahoma - 6
15. Virginia - 6
16. Edinboro - 5
17. North Carolina - 5
18. Old Dominion - 5
19. Oregon State - 5
20. Hofstra - 4

Re: Team Scores at end of R1 ...

Safe to say if PSU has any chance in hell to repeat this session had to go this way, about as good as we good hope for from session 1.

absolutely ...

if you look at the maximum potential points of each team, PSU is in 10th place. Maximum potential points means that all of your remaining wrestlers will win by pin in all of their remaining matches, which will never happen, but it still shows how little margin for error PSU has. They had to do really well this afternoon to have any chance. With only 7 wrestlers entered, I think they'd have to do nearly as well this evening, and perhaps even in R3 to have a legitimate chance. Then again, all kinds of upsets happen at Nationals, so as long as you regroup and start winning, a team can make up for some unexpected loses.

Should be a fun 3 days, but that's usually the case.

Re: That one really hurts the Hawkeyes

I am sure the Hawkeyes have some hope of him scoring a ton of points in the wrestle backs.....but this is certainly not what they planned.

The number of guys from the top teams who didn't win in round one is surprising. Should be fun.

Hey, just wanted to thank Tom and everyone else for the updates. I'm en route from Huntsville to Philly, checking as I can. Am currently in a 3-hr layover in ATL, looking for a bar that can spare one screen from hoops ... yeah, right.

Anyway, great news so far, about as good as we could've hoped for. 7-0, bonus, 2nd place ... yep, pretty good Round 1.

Re: absolutely ...

Too early to look at Max Potential Pts because no consi matches have been wrestled -- so nobody has been eliminated.

Right now it skews heavily toward wrestlers who lost in Round 1, because those guys have to wrestle 2x as many matches to place 3rd (vs. those still wrestling for 1st), and therefore project to 2x the bonus points for falls.

Once some guys get eliminated, it'll start looking a lot different.
