Nelson and Mahon per Andrew Callahan

I believe we'll have enough quality players to have a great 1st team O-line as well as a complete very good 2nd team, which may come into play during those hot and humid September games when the big guys get tired.

I don't believe I've ever officially heard why Mahon was on the shelf last season, but I'm glad he's back and healthy. :)

That is great, great news but I am honestly STUNNED with regards to Nelson.
I thought the soonest we would see him is Oct.
This will be our best OL since 09, possibly 05.

The 2008 o-line was one of the better ones in PSU history. All 5 starters reached 1st team all B1G at some point in their careers.

2009 o-line took a big step backwards when we started Pannell and Stankievich who weren't physically ready yet. Iowa and OSU took advantage of that weakness and was the main reason for our two losses.

The 2005 o-line, IMO, was very average outside of Levi Brown and Tyler Reed. Everytime I rewatch the Orange Bowl or Ohio State game, its apparent how physically dominated those other players were. Mrob is what made that offense go.

I still recall the story about how Andrew Richardson and EZ Smith only managed to get single digit reps on the bench at their pro day workout. That was the prime example of how poor our S&C program was back then.

So I guess my point here is that I hope the 17 o-line can be like 08, and not like 09 or 05.

All those guys from 05 09 have used their eligibility up. What will happen in 17 has nothing to do with then. As for how good can they be? Well if you need to ask you have not watched the expected starters play much. Also Nelson and Mahon bring invaluable experience.

Yea I meant 08. We'll have to agree to disagree on the 05 line. Those guys may have only gotten whatever amount of reps on the bench but they were good lineman for us.

My take on this, is that so much time has gone by, and so much has changed in the game in general, that rather than compare and contrast to past O lines, my tendency is to just look at this line on it's own merits, away from the time capsule. This is fantastic news, both Andrew and Brendan ready to go! Great leaders and great football players, they'll make us that much better. Now, we have a great situation, you consider Nelson, Mahon, Bates, Gonzalez, McGovern, Wright, Menet, Jenkins, Fries, Simpson, Gellerstedt, Miranda, and the rest of the group, and if you are Matt Limegrover, you now have all your weapons on the table and loaded, and you can assemble them the way you want to, along with Coach Moorhead.

Happy news indeed; hope it plays out that way.

Could this be about as quick as any OL has come back from a 2nd major knee injury if so? Is it related to improved surgical and rehab techniques?

I have been thinking that getting even half a season of play out of Nelson would be a bonus, but IF he is back at his new level of full health in time for camp and the opener, that is a huge bonus in terms of competition and depth and in-game leadership.

Glub, glub.

Steele had both Mahon and Nelson playing guard, one at right guard and the other at left guard. Having them both is just enormous for this offense.

JF: Andrew Nelson and Brendan Mahon will be major parts of the offense and ready for camp.

Good to hear.
A few things:

  1. Sea Hunt - great show. Some really cool underwater filming, especially for that era.
  2. Let us not forget Admiral Nelson of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea or Lord Admiral Nelson of Trafalgar and the Battle of the Nile. Or even Nelson Briles...
  3. Really happy for Mahon and Nelson. Coming back from an injury requires dedication and hard work (and a lot of suffering). Very good role model for younger players. Nelson strikes me as a future coach, based upon his work ethic and love of the game.
  4. Regardless of who starts, the depth and competition for PT is significant. There were guys in prior years who didn't push as hard as they could, because they knew they would start regardless. There simply was no one else viable. Now, PSU goes 2 and 3 deep. You need to work to keep your spot.
  5. Not really related to this thread, but I think the staff is very underrated in player development. Look at how well Bates played being shifted around to different spots. He deserves tons of credit for that, but so do the coaches.

Just my hunch, but I'm skeptical about Nelson being 100% and playing a full season, just has a lot of injury history
But....nowadays, "next man up" on the OL is no cause for worry.

As well as some good recruiting for the OL, also have to credit Coach Matt Limegrover; he's got the respect of the guys at his position area. And the Strength & Conditioning program is in good hands, too.

Nobody can predict injuries, and everyone gets their share. Frankly, we had far more than "our share" last year. Fingers crossed that it evens out this year, and we avoid some of those.

LT - Wright
LG - Bates
C - McGovern
RG - Mahon
LT - Nelson

Hmm. Don't see Wright at LT unless he has continued to improve. Not sure I see Nelson playing outside given his history. I think Bates will be LT.

Maybe Mahon RT, Wright and Nelson at guard?

I am happy if Mahon and Nelson provide back-up depth,.
Anything more than that is gravy

Up to 10 ol play significant minutes per game ....all year long.... don't give a rat's ass who is designated starter. Expect Bates to be in the NFL next year along with Mahon.

Woah, gravy? Two team leaders, one of which, Mahon, was graded as the best O lineman in two different games before injury, and Nelson, who has performed very well, when healthy?

If they're healthy, and they are, per Franklin, then serve up the gravy.

Won't this be Bates's

Mahon received the high grades at LT. I recall him struggling at G.

FWIW, this article from Callahan notes:

Penn State's starting offensive line did not change over the course of spring practices with Ryan Bates, Steven Gonzalez, Connor McGovern, Brendan Mahon and Chasz Wright filling out the first team from left to right.

Is there any precedent for this? I can't think of a team that's rotated OL to that degree. It could be devastating if it worked. Imagine the poor guy getting chewed up by Mahon or Bates, and suddenly, in comes 340-pound Wright with fresh legs.
