No updates on height and weight, but this is the current roster, and CURRENT positions.(Toney still a defensive end). Note, Jan Johnson has not given up football according to this roster, which is good news. 12 linebackers on the squad, not as bad as originally thought. Keep the faith.

Good to see Bey on there. I can see him at 6-6, 310-315 when the season rolls around. Could be a real surprise this fall given the positive comments about him last spring.

Miranda at 295, and Shelton 290. Some nice weight gains.

Reading between the lines from Franklin's press conference on Saturday, I'd be very surprised if Beh is still here by fall camp.

J. Miller and J. Thomas listed as LBs.

Do you know how this document gets published, why it gets published, etc?

I don't see anything between these lines that would indicate that. Unless there are other parts you are referring to.

Q. What do you think Noah Beh took away from his season last year, and do you expect him to contribute moving forward?
JF: Yeah, we'll see. We'll see how these things play out. I think every guy's situation is different, and how they handle those situations, you know, I think -- what we want is we want all these situations that happened for our guys to be opportunities for growth, and I think as coaches, if we handle that way and the players handle it that way, then they learn from it, they grow, they move forward, they move on, and they're better for it and we're better for it, all of us.

To me that's up to all of us. That's up to me as the head coach to handle that way, to look at anything that happens in life as an opportunity to grow and learn from, and it's up to these young people to do the same thing. The most important thing is are we looking back four to five years from now, are we looking back 15 to 20 years from now when we have the anniversary of the Big Ten Championship game and these guys all come back, and we're laughing about some of the bumps in the roads and the hiccups that they had as freshmen and sophomores and things like that.

You know, where are they now? And as we all know, we're where we are today because of every experience that we have along the way growing up. That's kind of how we look at all these things.

It would be nice to see Beh contributing next season and with his head on straight. I'm hoping whatever issues he had last year are behind him. He was a guy who the coaches were pretty high on two seasons ago and somebody we all thought would compete for a starting spot going into last season.

I'd say that his choice not to commit to Beh being reinstated ("we'll see how these things play out") says something.

I also believe that if what's floating around on some other boards is true, he's not eligible yet under athletic department policy and won't be eligible again until a full year after he was suspended, and a second occurrence would cost him the rest of his eligibility.

Again, I'd be surprised if the staff didn't just suggest that he find a different option, especially if we're still running thin on room after signing day.

I didn't read it that way at all. He is suspended from competition, not from practice, so he should be good to for spring practice. If he does well there, and everything else goes well (We'll see how these things play out) he will be good to go in the fall. I am rooting for the kid!

Assuming: (1) the link is a 100% accurate picture as of today, (2) that the two scholarships earned by walk-ons were for spring only, and (3) that all non-early-enrollee commits sign...I have PSU at 85 scholarships and 31 walk-ons. (Also assuming I actually know what I'm talking about)

In the neighborhood but I believe you are off by 4.

I have Smith, Davis and McPhearson as scholarship players, Fessler as a non-scholarship. There is an recent article stating that Fessler was given a scholarship for the 2017 season. If that's the case, then it is 86 schollies and 30 non-schollies, by my lights and this list.

Note* The articles pertaining to McPhearson and Fessler seem pretty straight-forward that they were given schollies for Fall '17/Spring '18.

64 kids recruited as "scholarship players" (prior to 2017)
+
4 2017 recruits (EEs) listed on roster

Would leave room for (excluding former walk-ons) another 17 available for 2017 (total of 21 for 2017 with the 4 EEs)

Adjust from the 21 total for 2017 by:

Subtract by the XXX number former walkons w Scholarships for 2017 (one never knows for sure what that number will be....but almost certainly B Smith, assuming he returns)

Add by any scholarship guys on current roster who wont be back for 2017 (Beh? Who knows who else might drop off)

As always, its a "fluid" number......but 20-21 total for 2017 (of new signees) should be a manageable number.

"Keep the faith" says one of the most negative posters on here not too long ago...most of us weren't the ones who didn't have "faith", you were.

I follow what you are saying. Looking at the roster Guns linked, and if relying upon news articles that confirm schollies for Davis, Smith, McPh, and Fessler, you are left with exactly 30 of 116 players who are walk-on. That gets me to 86 if the 14 non-early-enrollee commits sign. I guess it's a point of inquiry, i.e. is the speculation of some additional players not returning accurate based upon: (1) assuming all commits sign making it 86; and (2) PSU going after additional recruits, e.g. Webb, Brooks, Proctor, Ruggs, Conliffe. (January 16 was apparently the deadline to declare for the draft)(Isn't transfer deadline 1/31 or 2/1?).

The important point is the last one - - - it's fluid, and flexible

Somewhere between 0 and 30 (probably)

To be determined between now and August 2018

The 30 is the closest to accurate. Considering all roster spots and every possible reason, I would be surprised if it isn't a couple more than that.

Well - ya never know. But considering there will only be 14 scholarship recruits who use up their last year of eligibility in 2017.......30 might be a bit on the "high side" estimate

Interesting that Polk is listed as a junior with junior eligibility. Are we sure he qualified for a redshirt this past season? I thought he played early this year but could be mistaken.

I would agree with that assessment. Coach Franklin did not offer a resounding endorsement of Noah and you have to wonder if he remains on the team, i.e., on scholarship through this spring semester and then he parts ways with the team.

Beh's weight has to be a mistake. It has been documented by the board's resident anatomist that Beh would never weigh more than 255.

Ha,ha...
good one. He was around 300 last spring and "all good weight." Will easily carry 310+ with that frame. I like OL who come in a bit light with good frames to add good weight.

As of today, and excluding freshmen walk-ons and preferred walk-ons for 2017, my count is:

118 on the roster
30 current walk-ons
87 on scholarship*

They have to be at 105 until August 21 (first day of classes).

*The 87 includes Fessler, BSmith, McPhearson, and Davis

We have a crapload of DB with the 5 more that came in today. 24 in all. Only 2 seniors.

6 QB (1 more already committed for next year, we could probably lay off for a year)
7 RB (1 senior and 1 likely NFL bound early)
19 OL (2 seniors)
20 DL (2 Seniors)
14 LB (2 seniors)
6 TE with two already committed next year and 2 seniors
16 WR's (4 seniors)
7 K/P/LS...do we really need 6 kickers?

Juwan Johnson and Irvin Charles are the only backup WR's that saw any real time last season. The rest of the guys are on the small side. We've got Shorter in the 2018 class...hopefully we can pick up another bigger WR or two. We also need LB's. We've got a good balance of OL and DL, but way too many db's.

Irvin Charles has been called "the best football player on this team" by James Franklin. If that light comes on this year, as it did for Mike Gesicki, look out.........

I think Franklin said that Charles was the best WR, not the best player. Maybe I'm wrong. It could be that Franklin was trying to get Irvin's attention, inspire him.

Surprised to see Shaka T. is still south of 200lb...needs to pack on quite a few more if he wants to see the field anytime soon.

Also, wonder why all of the new signees weren't on the list?

Weights were not updated on the new roster, just the new names and class seniority.

Weights will be updated, I would imagine, on the roster that we'll see when camp opens this spring. From what I am hearing, Shaka now goes around 220.

Great points. I guess you can look at numbers:. You need four dl, four db, five ol, etc. I suspect it is easier to get 5-10 185 guys than 6-6 305 guys (can't teach big). Plus, as you say, these guys can cover on special teams.

Yeah...there's a rumor around some campfire between State College and Scranton that there's a reason for his weight gain. It may be the same reason that Billy Fessler has a scholarship this semester.

I don't think your numbers include Smith or Davis. I think it would Bea real slap in the face if those guys didn't have a scholarship.

We've got a couple of guys coming back from injury but there are no guarantees. I think a scholarship opens up if one if those guys doesn't come back because medical scholarships don't count as part of the 85. Maybe somebody can confirm this. That might be part of Franklin's "we'll see".
