I'm a casual wrestling fan and just started to pay attention to this year's team. What is the story with Nick Hall? I thought he was a lock to start this year and might be a 4-time national champ. I thought he was super fantastic in high school and was a once in a decade type wrestler like Gable or Sanderson. What's the story? Thanks.

I don't know about Nick, but Mark Hall is red-shirting this year.

I think you are referring to Mark Hall? He is currently Red-shirting but there is always a chance his Shirt could get pulled if need be.

and here is a short note on Mark Hall's performance from this past weekend:

"Also, this past weekend saw some other wrestlers go to the Bearcat Open, including Junior World Champion Mark Hall. While wrestling unattached, Hall went 5-0 and won the 174 pound title. Leading up to the final, he was able to score two pins and a tech fall. In the final, Hall came against NCAA Qualifier Josef Johnson (Harvard), and won via major decision, 12-4. Congratulations to Mark Hall for winning his first collegiate tournament!"

Yup. Coach Casey Sanderson can pull the shirt at any time [before a deadline] if he feels Mark Hall's points will be needed at nationals. ;)

It looks like Mark Hall is going to be at the Michigan State Open this weekend. He said he planned to wrestle there during an interview with Jim Carlson last week. The individual wrestlers signed up for the tournament aren't listed on Track yet, but the team list indicates one wrestler from Penn State will participate.

Awesome. By list of teams and number of entries, the quality of competition doesn't look great at Michigan State Open, but thinking that Christian Brucki of Central Michigan and Trace Engelkes of Northern Illinois will be there at 174. Both of those guys are solid. Too bad Isaiah White is at 165!

I still don't understand why Mark isn't starting on the Penn State team. He seems like a phenom. I read where he defeated Jason Nolf twice (10-0 and 10-6) earlier this year in a tourney. Last year in high school he was the USA wrestler of the year. I don't understand why he isn't starting and is being redshirted instead. Isn't his like James Franklin deciding to redshirt S. Barkley? It doesn't make sense to me.

Because Hall and Sanderson think it is best for team to RS this year.
Just two years ago, Nico RS'd as a 4th year guy.
Nolf RS'd, and Zane did as well.

Trust the coach..

I think it's because Coach Sanderson has a plan or something. People whisper that it is a plan for world domination. :) The plan would be a bet (when the redshirt becomes definite) that this year's team can win the national championship without Mark Hall's points. The redshirt would let a future Zain/Nolf/Nickal-less Penn State team deploy Mark Hall's points for world domination purposes. It's like putting money (points) in a bank

I thought CP was the one that had a plan. Sorry CP, I couldn't resist that one.;)

It's kind of hard to explain. But wrestling isn't comparable to other sports in scoring. He's not starting because PSU could very well win a team title without Hall and this allows another guy to wrestle a year (who they're possibly spending money on) while also maintaining Mark's 4 years of eligibility. It's a long play.

Yeah, doesn't really look all that tough for Hall. Obviously, my site only lists the starters for the teams that have this tournament on the schedule, there will obviously be WAY more participating, but the ones that it does list will probably be the "cream-of-the-crop" for each of the weights....well, except for 174.

Thanks for the insight. I guess wrestling is different from football and basketball. It would unthinkable to redshirt say the best running back in the country. I guess another factor is that, unlike football and basketball, wrestlers never leave early for the pros. In a sense wrestling is now like football and basketball were 40 years ago.

If you want to compare it to college football, consider that Penn State wrestling is the equivalent of Alabama right now. They can compete for and win national titles while still redshirting very talented 5 star recruits.

I have had a few drinks so probably should have my phone taken away but there is a saying better to be quite and thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt. Good to see that I am not the only one who disgards this

To win it all and get all the points Mark will total i think we need to wrestle him...He can win a National Championship this year and get a lot of point at 174 for himself and the team !!!! The guys we have there now are not going to bonus guys and will be fighting like crazy to make it to the round of 12....Of the 2 Rasheed will score more points due to his ability to pin guys....

Nick Hall chose OSU after leaving everyone hanging for months, causing Cael to lose out on signing Nick Berge and Nick Wittlake. Not to mention NBY.

Hopefully we are still in the Nick Stevenson race
