Nick Lee

Lee certainly won handily, but for a while there in the first minute it was difficult to keep up with the scramble...

i was watching Nick Lee wrestle and had a moment of amazement "it's happening again". PSU is about to launch another Zain/Nolf. I think the ceiling on this kid in a year or two is Hodge contention. Wow!

A while back I read a quote from Cael that, "Nick Lee is going to be a handful". Whenever you hear something like that from him, or that so-and-so, "...is gonna be fun to watch", it's a pretty good indicator of what's likely coming. See Ruth, Taylor, Retherford, Nolf, et al.

Can hardly wait to see what his bro Joe brings in a year or two. :)

Nevills bros.
Lee bros.
Manville bros?

My guesses:

Joe Lee isn’t as talented as Nick Lee
Seth Nevills and Nick Nevills have similar careers
Carson is way better than Mason

I think Joe is more athletic than Nick, but he doesn't appear to have Nick's A+ technique.

Agree on Seth... maybe slightly better.

Carson reminds me too much of Mason to say he will be way better.

I think Joe is going to be an extremely entertaining Lion wrestler. Not sure how he ends up doing against Carr.

Assuming Seth stays healthy Seth will surpass Nick. I think Seth is a tad better, he is bigger and Nick missed alot of strength and skill development that hopefully Seth gets.

Almost feels like David Carr and Joe Lee have just traded punches almost like Manville and Hidlay did .thats just how it feels off the top of my head without looking up results

Hope Nick isn't really in Hodge contention next year -- that would mean something happened to Jason and Bo.

How about in a few years:

Sanderson brothers
Cunningham brothers

Something would have to happen to Yianni in years to come also
Not really. Not next year, with the likes of Nolf, Nickal, Hall, Joseph, Valencia, Diakomihalis, Kemerer, Lewis, and a couple others all back.

Even the next year will be loaded, as 5 of those listed will be back. But the OP said "contention", so imo, with continued improvement, he should be "in contention" as a JR.

Another thing to look at is the weight class, which will have Diakomihalis and Eierman...so it's an uphill climb, and one I'm excited to see play out. To be considered best in the country, one must first be best in their weight class.

If he can get even close to Zain strong on top in the next year or so, he'll be right there. For now, I love his attitude and variety of scoring.

Good call. Joe may have a little more upside once it works on the technique.

Carson scares me .... by the time he gets to college he will have wrestled a billion matches. From the time he was 6-ish Team Manville had him all over the country at every high level event getting as many matches as possible. The kid has incredible experience and technique. Unfazed.

Instead of writing Yianni, Roar goes with the full Diakomahalis. Everybody better step up their spelling game over the next four years.

I'm still just hoping people can figure out how to spell "Gulibon" correctly. We might have that one solved in a few more years of hard work.

Baby steps...

My obviously-Greek brother-in-law's first name is Yannis, pronounced the same. So it's actually easier for me to remember Diakomihalis (no double letters, only the O diverges from the pronunciation) than whether it's Yianni or Yannis.

You are aware that you spelled his name incorrectly?? :);)
Another problem for a kid named Diakomihalis is that other kids always say Diakomi-halitosis. :)

(I know it’s true because that’s what I’d do, and I have the maturity of a kid.)

I'll bet Spyker's $500 it happens before HR consistently spells Cael correctly.

During the Eagles game Sunday night, Fox showed a sideline shot of a bearded red head with a cane. My wife of 31 years asked, "Is that Carl Wentz?" It was like being married to an Iowa fan. I'm not sure the marriage is going to survive.

I can't wait to see how Nick does in March. It's amazing to see the corrections he makes from match to match but also the in match adjustments. He will most certainly be a hammer for years to come.

141 and 125 are the most interesting weights to me this year. Aside from heavyweight, these are the two tightest fields by far.

I'd like to see him wrestle Brock Zacherl again. I have a lot of respect for Zacherl, but I think we'll see a different result than we saw in their first match.

I think you are right about the outcome next time around with Brock. I would like to see Brock AA though. It's fun to see small schools like Clarion with their history of solid teams get AA's. Feel the same way about Lock Haven and Chance.

I'm curious how Nick does against Chad Red. Red came out on top in some close matches when they were in high school. If Nick easily handles Red today, that'll speak volumes of what the PSU room can do in terms of development.

Could also speak speak to Chad Red hitting a speed bump in college, for which there's some evidence.

Nick stayed aggressive with Yianni at the bearcat open, but Yianni won pretty much every scramble. It could be a matter of cleanup and/or strength building, or it could be that Yianni has next-level scrambling ability. I'm guessing all of the above, and they will battler for years if they stay at the same weight.

That's how I saw it. I don't think Nick is quite at the top tier level, but there's little doubt in my mind he's headed there because of how unafraid he is to fail. He'll probably get burned a few more times, like he did against Gfeller, but only ever because his reach hasn't caught up to his grasp, which just seems like a matter of time.

Being that he's from where I live and I know his cousin well, it's kind of entertaining to watch everyone in the OSU/Iowa thread misspell SorensEn's name. ;)

I have no clue how the lineup projects and/or shakes out next year but I wouldn't mind Nick taking a RS (similar to Zain) then coming back ready to go at 141 as a RS Soph, then maybe he can go up to 149 the following year.
