Nick Lee

If someone reads this that may see him tomorrow let him know how proud of himself he should be.

I remember watching Quentin Wright his true freshman year when he willed his way into the B1G finals and a 6th place finish at Nationals. Nick has reminded me of that performance this year. I'm really looking forward to watching him over the coming years.

Coupla quick thoughts.... as I guy from his hometown, I'm very proud of how he wrestles, the guts he shows and how he handles himself off the mat.

I didn't have a good feeling when he had to face Alber right after that loss, but Nick handled him well. He actually got a better draw losing in the first round than if he'd have lost in the 2nd. That would have dropped him down to face Chad Red and be on that side of the bracket. Win two and lose and he is likely in the same spot he's in now.

Good point. If he doesn't win either match tomorrow, he finishes exactly where I predicted before the tourney (6th). He will have gotten there via a different route than I expected, but same destination. Very impressive, especially given how stacked 141 is this year. Anyone who AAs in this weight class earned it.

Great job by Nick! Top 6 true freshmen is as much as anyone could have asked for.

To come back from tha First round loss shows some real heart

Five straight wins in wrestlebacks? There's a lot of Q in this kid, too.

After a tough loss....some show Pride, Guts and Determination.........While others mail it in. We saw both tonight. Lucky to have guys like Nick.

Yes, but can Sanders coach him up?;)

Yes, great job, Mr. Lee. 5th place! Three places above his seed. What was that ... his 6th win at the NCAAs? To put it into a loner perspective, as a true freshman Retherford also finished in 5th.

His loss to Diehl kinda had me worried a little bit but we didn't expect him to make the finals anyways so either way he was ending up in the consi bracket. He just went back there a little earlier than we had hoped.

Either way. GREAT JOB NICK LEE ON YOUR ALL AMERICAN FINISH!!

I can tell you after getting stuck in the first round, I feared something more similar to what Keener delivered. The kid did awesome and delivered about the best we could have hoped all things considered. He really came through in the pinch for the team.

Granted, I need a shot of whisky and an alkaseltzer, to be able to handle watching most of his matches he gave us critical points and we are in a good position now.

I hope he spends a LOT of time in the weight room this off season, and he is a bit too sloppy, seemingly having no idea what the score or how much time is left on the clock. Most of his losses this year were of the woulda coulda shoulda variety, with sloppy mistakes late in the 3rd period. One more year of bulk for sure, and better technique should build him into top 4 caliber in a very tough weight class.

Just normal freshman to sophomore improvement will put him as a top 4 next year. If he makes a big jump from the bottom position and improves his power he will add to the Saturday night PSU vs everyone dual meet next year.

And for all the talk of Sugar Shaq being a bonus machine, he contributed 9.5 points to PSU's total vs Nick Lee's 11.5. Super impressive for the true freshman! Definitely outperformed my expectations.

Let's not forget, Zain had that redshirt year and came back tearing arms off. I don't think that's in the cards for Lee, but he would benefit from it. Probably 2 true freshman at 25 & 33 next year. I wouldn't expect to see 3 trues or 2 trues and a room guy at 41.
Regardless, what Lee did the last two days was absolute nails.

Lee has Zain II written all over him. I hope he takes his RS next year. With young pups coming in at 125-141, I think Cael can afford to put him on the Zain plan.... PSU will be stronger in both the short term and the long term. Then redshirt the pups the following year.

Be honest -- after Round 1, who had Nick Lee on the podium while 2x defending champ Dean Heil DNP?

Heckuva a tourney so far, despite the opening round loss.
Before the tournament (ok, not after the first loss, but I don't give up and neither did he), I had him at 5th with 3 bonus points (KYPSW on 24x7).

I could see Cael wanting to keep a kid like Lee around the program an extra year, for the same reasons he gave when Zain red shirted.

Love what I see out of Lee. Always have been super high on him. He needs to add strength like most every true frosh does.

When he does, next year those 13-8 matches he is winning all turn into bonus. He will be ready to carry on in the tradition of those who have come before him. You can't teach his pace, plus he will start turning even NCAA guys.
