My 1st car was a '74 Gremlin, yellow with an orange stripe, if anything even UGLIER that that POS. Had about 80k when I got it. In 79, about 5 years after its manufacture, I rested my forearm on the driver's side fender while replacing the battery, and it collapsed, totally compromised by rust. Patched it with metal window screen, riveted in place in the still- somewhat study metal on the edges of the hole, covered by the goopy, fiberglass body repair stuff. My Gremlin was a car where I had no choice. Got it from my dad cause he was was sick of it. The Le Car came about because I was working a job where I traveled 75% of the time--most of it overseas travel. I needed a new car but had very little money and a huge aversion to debt. I want to say it cost me like $3500-4 grand brand new, but of course the 81s had come out by the time the dealer lowered the price to my range.That is a heck of a list of first cars. - My first car was a push-button automatic 62 Plymouth Valiant. It was more bondo than metal. I wrecked it and couldn't find a radiator for it but I paid less than $100 for it so that was OK.
- My next car was a 69 Mercury Cougar. Probably the worst car I've ever owned but it had great power and looked awesome
- I then bought a Datsun B210. My first Jap car and it was a pleasure. It only had a 1200 cc engine but I could pack all of my college stuff (including my Bose 501 speakers) and get to college. I'd have to downshift to second gear to get up some of the mountains on I79 but that was OK. When I got my first job in NE Ohio, the truckers used to try and run me off the road.
- So I bought an American and got a Buick Skylark K car. GMs first response to the Jap wave. It was OK but the problem was the oil filter was behind the right front wheel. I had to take the wheel off to change the oil. The first time, it was on so tight, I had to get it towed and a guy with heavy equipment had to rip out the original equipment oil filter.
- So I went back to the Japs and bought a tenth-anniversary Toyota Celica. This is in the top three cars I've owned. It had a 40 watt per channel stereo and an analog equalizer in the dash. My coworkers used to laugh that it was the only car that had to downshift when I turned up the radio.
- Then I bought a Saab 900S which was my first intro to euro engineering and it was a great car.....loved it.
- Since then it has been a ride: BMW 528, MB E class, Porche 911S, Mazda Miata, Chrysler Pacifica, Ranger Rover (2), Jeep Wrangler...with the exception of the Couger, they've all been good for what I paid.
