Not so Special Teams...

Finally watched the game on DVR late last night. It made me wonder what the record is for recovered on-sides kicks for a season. Also, PSU's fake punt was suboptimal, to say the least, on many levels.

Now, at the risk of drawing the ire of the "thou shall not criticize any coach lest thou hast played at either the D1 or professional level" crowd, let me say that some critiques just make sense (e.g. when the game clock is running letting the play clock run down most of the way before snapping the ball when protecting a lead) and others are opinion. I can also say that many on this board no doubt echo the thoughts/opinions of ex-players and coaches when they are questioning play calls and other in game decisions of the PSU coaching staff.

That being said, PSU's special teams have seemed to struggle all season. They have had some big returns, but on the flip side have given up onsides kicks and the fake punt by MSU, which was obviously extremely costly. Does PSU make a special teams coaching change at season's end???

Your statement is too broad. Return game saved our butts at Indiana. Better question is, why are we so dismally unprepared for trick plays? Then again, the onside kick was not unexpected. I think Franklin sometimes gets in his own way.

I think we have covered kicks and punts rather well this season, outside of the ASU game. We certainly bottled up IU’s returners, who are decent. Kickoff’s from Checka have been pretty good for a true freshman.
FG’s not so good, but possibly improving.
Punting has been less consistent that what we are used to seeing from Blake.
Onsides kicks are a problem and possibly expect to see more of them until we show we can manage them.

As far as actual punting and kicking go, PSU doesn't have a kicking coach. No one does. Good ones are too expensive and there aren't many of them. Come to think of it, I don't think the NFL has kicking coaches.

Actually the closest you may find is North Texas' Marty Biagi, who is their special teams coach, Marty was also a dam good punter and kicker for Marshall. He's working his way up pretty quickly. But you are correct there are not many that can actually coach the art of punting or kicking a football

Makes sense. Hire someone who has kicked and he can learn the rest. Then your problem becomes how does he divide his time..

But you hit it in your earlier post. The good guys run camps and/or give private lessons because, in the immortal words of Willie Sutton, "that's where the money is."
