And you're figuring this out now?I had an interesting conversation with a former employee of the Houston Texans today. I’m not going to reveal his employment position or his name out of discretion but when I mentioned Obie and that I am a Penn Stater this guy said “James Franklin is a significant upgrade than Bill O’Brien. Penn State is much better off.” I asked why and he said “Bill O’Brien is one of the most arrogant and abusive guys he’s worked for as a player or coach.” He elaborated and I shared how he played the University for a contract extension and a bonus.
With that the conversation ended abruptly because this guy had other rhings to attend to.
Interesting...I never expected to hear that.
Not much of a surprise. We got what we needed out of BOB and are in a much better position.I had an interesting conversation with a former employee of the Houston Texans today. Eh, whatever.
I guess I was taken aback because I had never heard anyone characterize BoB as an abusive dick before. I know that there have been plenty of dicks in the NFL Lombardi, Landry, Noll, Walsh, Parcells, and
Belichek.

Ahh. he called his team "a bunch of Fu$kers" on national TV...I told this story a few times, but I was at a number of practices during BOB’s time and was embarrassed at his foul language and demeanor. It doesn’t make a difference to me if someone curses, but there were women and children present, most of whom were relatives of recruits. It isn’t something I would expect from our coach and embarrassed me as a supporter of the university.
18 Super Bowls, just sayin'. Not a business for the squeamish. Now add in Tom Coughlin, Don Shula, Joe Gibbs, Mike Ditka and Jimmy Johnson (none of whom were sweethearts) for 8 more. 50% of all SB's won by 10 guys who were giant BSD's. That tells me something.Eh, whatever.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED, that there would ever be profanity involved on the practice field. Thank God we never heard any foul language when I was in the service.I told this story a few times, but I was at a number of practices during BOB’s time and was embarrassed at his foul language and demeanor. Fighters, he said. Fighters.Ahh. he called his team "a bunch of Fu$kers" on national TV...
Foul language is overrated. Actions speak louder than words.I'm shocked, SHOCKED, that there would ever be profanity involved on the practice field. Thank God we never heard any foul language when I was in the service.

The only person I ever heard speak ill of Noll was Bradshaw, and Bradshaw is an idiot.I won a trip out to Denver with the Steelers and I just want to go on record that Chuck Noll was one of the nicest human beings I have had the pleasure to meet. I don’t know how he was with the team, although I could hear some yelling from outside the locker room after the game (they lost). But he really was a first class individual.
OB served his purpose, but James is a huge upgrade for PSU...I had an interesting conversation with a former employee of the Houston Texans today. Obie coaches like an NFL coach. He's probably going to always have a job but his days at the throttle in Houston I think are numbered. It's kinda surprising to me that he's still there.
By year 2 it was clear that O'Brien would never win a college national title. He knew it as well and got out.
Your football knowledge is on par with your basketball knowledge. Unfortunately both are horrible.
He does have a way of “pushing buttons” and doing what is necessary to stay alive.Obie coaches like an NFL coach. He's probably going to always have a job but his days at the throttle in Houston I think are numbered. It's kinda surprising to me that he's still there.
It was a blessing in disguise when he left. His days as ahead coach in the NFL are about over.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up as a college coach again simply because it’s going to be a long time before someone gives him another job as a head coach in the nf.
I'd tend to agree with that statement. When Obie had a decent team in 2012 he made the most of it in general. I remember an Iowa game that had the Iowa defense spinning much like our defense on the last two OSU dries last week. He was crafty with the offense. His liability was in other areas of the college game and PSU culture as far as I remember.

Yep. and we have a better situation now. Franklin will be here for 10 years minimum, and will make the CFP at least once.O’Brien was the right guy at the right time. Both PennState and Bill got what they wanted needed out of their relationship.
Perhaps, but, I do recall the utter lack of preparation vs. OSU in 2013. And the pointless 4th down gambles that gave PSU its only loss ever to Indiana.Year two of Penn State’s sanctions would be a horrible time to judge a coach’s ability to win a national title.

And, albeit we had limited scholarships, the total disregard for OL recruiting was unforgivable and PSU still has not totally recovered.
Unprecedented situation. The entire team could have transferred but didn’t and O’Brien deserves some credit for that. I can’t think of many that would have done much better in those circumstances but it could have easily been much much worse. Jim harbaugh has done marginally better with no such hinderances. Pat Narduzzi much much worse.
