Obie...

Unprecedented situation. The entire team could have transferred but didn’t and O’Brien deserves some credit for that. I can’t think of many that would have done much better in those circumstances but it could have easily been much much worse. Jim harbaugh has done marginally better with no such hinderances. Pat Narduzzi much much worse.

And FSU and Nebraska are 2 that others that come quickly to mind as just being flat out awful for really no good reason.

He under achieved his first year. How did they lose to Ohio and Virginia? There was plenty of veteran and future NFL talent on that team.

Losing both Silas and the Kicker, right before the season started was a pretty big problem.
Although why he had Zach Zwinak buried on the depth chart is a head scratcher.

Didn't CJF speak with him before taking the job here? I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall for that conversation.

I dont think they over spoke. O'Brien couldn't wait to get out of here.

Quote from article:

Franklin even checked in with the Texans coach prior to accepting the vacant head coaching position at Penn State.

“When I left and there were candidates for the job,” O’Brien said, “he called and asked just about where things were at and what I thought needed to be done improvement wise relative to the [Penn State football program]. I told him what a great place it was and what a great two years I had [at Penn State].”

Not a bit surprised. Most successful NFL coaches were made for NFL and same for College coaches. They have different job descriptions other than wins get you more $. I appreciate Obie for the time he was at PSU. He was able to work with some key current players to keep the ship afloat. Very difficult times for sure. It was also nice having an outsider for the first time in decades to point out flaws like the workout facility and practice bubble. I don't recall him saying anything negative of Penn State since he left. I wish him the best and was happy to see him pull off the win last night as I picked them over Cowboys in my pickem pools :)

Never recalled anything negative either, less the article by Jones and that was with some PSU loyalists not the team or school per sey.
But after his last game and the night he left, New Years I recall it was not to difficult to read his body language, get me out of here.

Also as he left Scott Paterno had very good things to say about him.

Unless something has changed with him and he all of a sudden likes dealing with the "unwashed" (alums) and developed a sudden passion for recruiting he will be an NFL OC.
I bet he gets another NFL head coaching job. Look at some of the dregs and retreads who get second chances. I mean, Doug Marrone got a head coaching gig!

I believe he struggled with injuries early. Something unusual, gout as I recall.
