Obli's Observations: Joe Lunch-bucket

I actually think the data suggests Millen has it backwards - Saquon will hurt you, Trace will kill you. Because when you say Trace you are including Hamilton, Gesicki, Thompkins, JJ, Blacknall...Teams have slowed down or even shut down Barkley and lost, often times badly. Examples would include Wiscy last year, Pitt this year, Indiana this year and last and others. The one team that played to stop us from throwing downfield and making big plays was Iowa. Saquon had a career day but we scored just 21 and pulled it out at the end.
I think he was referring to run option only.

But had we lost to tOSU and beat Sparty, we'd be staring down the barrel at a 11-1 season, headed to the B1G championship and, perhaps, the series. We'd be ranked somewhere between 5 and 7 right now.
Still would have needed OSU to lose to Illinois (not happening) or Michigan to make the B1G Championship. But had we pulled it out against Sparty, it very may well have set up the exact reverse of last year: OSU as a 2 loss conference champ and PSU as a one loss team.

Good stuff. Need to finish strong and 'boss up' for whatever bowl game we have and take that, a nice showing at the NFL Draft, and a great recruiting class into the off-season. I'm concerned that we blew our shot this year, and I'm one who prefers experience to talent, but maybe we'll have the right mix next year to make a run at the CFP.
Agree this season could have been more but we lost to a comparable team on the road and just didn’t get it done at MSU. Biggest thing is not letting the MSU loss derail the season, despite the disappointment. CJF has the tools to keep things positive.
Through the Michigan game and beginning of tOSU game, this team played like they could hang with anyone.
Our fortunes (and ranking) would change markedly if the CFP committee and players knew Bates (and bucholz, or someone comparable) was returning.

I'm not sure what you mean cause I think Johnson is pretty damn good.
Charles I'm moving to TE next year. LOL.
Combined stats over almost two full seasons: 42 Receptions 647 Yards 2 TDs

I just wish people would cut the BS when talking about players' potential.

I disagree.

Fair enough but, his blocking aside, I thought he was a lot more valuable last year. He made some huge plays last year using his phenomenal skills as a receiver. I just didn't see them this year and it's not necessarily his doing. That drop off together with his blocking is my basis for saying what I did earlier.

You had Godwin, Gesicki, Hamilton, and Thompkins getting a lot of balls this year and last. Someone will have to pick up that production next year.

Over/under on games it takes for the ‘we miss Gesicki’ post like the bogus ‘we miss Godwin’ posts - 1 1/2

Yeah, Gesicki has blocking problems. I value his ability as a receiver much more. Not many in college football can match his size mismatch in the secondary. Problem is, the passing game doesn’t exploit it as much as they could. You could send him down the seam or run a corner route every time and he’d at least outjump defenders for the ball (like the jumpball on 2nd drive vs Michigan). A QB like Brady gets a hold of him and they could make him a star at the next level.

But you’re looking forward to him not being here. Good fan.

Most of us don’t have a clue about a player’s potential until after we’ve seen it tapped. Then all we do is share what’s already know or demonstrable. So it’s almost all BS.

And the folks who matter, don’t give a darn what we have to say about a player’s potential.

But for the record, I agree with you. Both gamers.

Gronkowski is the same height as Gesicki and weighs 10 pounds more. Maybe the pros can beef Mike up a bit and teach him to block. Gesicki is a great athlete -- probably better than Gronk. He might be a project but could be really good after a few years of blocking practice. Why does PSU let him get away with not blocking? Joe wouldn't have put up with this. Gesicki wouldn't be playing for Joe if he didn't block.

Jesus H. Why so thin skinned? I said he won't be missed, period. There are players available to step in.

We got a win and got a little of the bad taste out of our mouth. I think we'll come out and lay waste to Nebraska.

Cupcakes can apparently cure hangovers, and bad taste. Two hard losses took it out of the kids. Kids were low on emotional energy at East Lansing and the playing the first half with the Scarlet Pimpernel. Hopefully return to form this week.

Should coaches ignore potential?

Fields, Wade, and a returning John Reid should allow for more man coverage schemes next year. Hope so anyway.
Amani is a redshirt junior I believe, he'll be back. I'll take him over the wade I've seen any day of the week.....

it's not that 88 doesn't have the inability to touch (let alone block) a rusher... he simply prefers Dos Equis... I mean he simply chooses not to. Pretty apparent. And I love his ability and think he will do pretty well at the next level. But jeez.. he is getting our backfield lit up bad. Dude, reach out and touch someone!

Watching that first quarter was excruciating... we were not even close to being into the game. Whiffs everywhere. No fire. And if Rutgers had a QB, we were toast. They didn't and, to the kids credit, they sucked it up and went to work from the 2nd qtr on and won handily (and looked like the penn state team we know).

Wade will likely become very good... and days like Saturday should help with the process. As mentioned earlier, the Rutgers QB is simply awful. An average QB would have toasted Wade twice for TD's (one on each side of the field). I'm hopeful that Lamont makes the adjustment.

Remember when this gauntlet schedule was first posted? Then, we also had the fear of playing Nebraska at the end of it (4 incredibly tough games in 5 weeks). I'm sure Neb will come to play, but they are hardly as fearsome as their former selves. Thank God.

he's good...that's a pretty good group at Corner
now who will the Safeties be? we've got a good experienced group currently, but lose the starters, and there is room for improvement in pass coverage for this position group.

honestly...maybe wade? He seems physical enough, and isn't much smaller than Apke (I think). He's really young and will obviously get better, but right now he's not as natural looking in coverage as TCF.

Suspending a starter? Unheard of at every D1 football school except Pitt......the Liar's say so.
It must be really, really bad. I mean a seventh traffic violation only gets you suspended for one series, what did MB do to get suspended for an entire game??

It has been a pretty small sample size, but I really like what I've seen out of Monroe when he is in there. I was listening to the 4th quarter of the GA State game on my drive home and could hear his hits. Could be another big hitter like Marcus but need to see more of his pass coverage skills. Maybe Taylor starts living up to his four star status too?!
