I will say these are unit or statistical goals that may not directly relate to the final roster.
1. Get more yards consistently on first down. I think this will happen with our OL, backs and new OC. We need fewer 3rd and long’s.
2. Run Clifford less. I think he turned out to be a better runner than most of us could have expected, but 100 + carries ? He was clearly dinged up his last three games and still did not look 100% in the Cotton Bowl.
3. Get production out of all of the WR positions. Using more of the field is essential for this.
4. Develop another TE to compliment Pat.
5. Improve pass protection. This might be personnel - related and would involve shifting players or starting new ones, or, it might just be a player development goal.

I want to see a more sophisticated modern passing attack were we utilize pick plays to get receivers free and more exacting routes against zone.
Would also like to see us use our talented backs in the passing offense.

#3 and #5 fix almost everything on offense. We need a RT. If Wallace can beat out Fries maybe Fries gets moved to LG. Fries is excellent at run blocking. He just is not athletic enough to play tackle against the top DEs he faces.

Miranda will be at LG.

Fries isn’t a guard, he’s a pure tackle. Fries and Wallace will most likely share the position or Wallace will at least get 1/3 of the snaps. Miranda and Thorpe are the guards

Agree. I like Fries and and am glad he is returning, but his pass protection is a real weakness— too stiff and bad footwork

Would love to see them stick with the run game when it's clicking. Too many times they would run the ball successfully then for some reason try to pass. Definitely need a 3rd receiver to step up and actually make some plays.

Don't know about the offense, but if PSU is going to make a run next year, Coach Franklin has to have a serious heart-to-heart discussion with Rahne and the Defensive Staff as to how our Pass Defense was so awful week after week (especially on 2nd- and 3rd-&-long which happened quite often as our run defense was one of the best in the nation). Need to figure out whether it's scheme or what as PSU cannot have a repeat of that ridiculousness next year.

He's not a pure tackle. He might have the prototypical Tackle size but he can't block edge rushers. What makes Miranda a better guard? Thorpe won the RG competition. Miranda is small and less powerful than Fries. In today's game you want your best 5 OL guys on the field and if he's not better than Wallace at RT, why not look at him at guard?

Clifford needs to go through his progressions quicker.

Yes he does, but it’s far easier to do that when your offensive line gives you time to do that Notice how much time LSU’s offensive line gave Burrow time to do that yesterday. Clifford faced pressure far too often yesterday against Memphis for god’s sake.

Remember, back in ‘17 when we had injuries it was Fries who subbed in at Guard before Menet when both were R-Fr. Believe it was for our home game against Michigan. So Fries can definitely play there especially if it helps his pro aspirations.

So if Fries gets beat out by a redshirt freshman, then he’s totally qualified to be our starting left guard, and despite learning his craft at Tackle for his career. Solid logic. I think the coaching staff would have put him at Guard if they felt he was a better guard than Miranda. Also, guards have to block fast guys too. Gonzo had all kinds of problems yesterday with the quick dline of Memphis

That’s because he was more ready physically than Menet at that point in time

The point is the coaches had enough confidence in Fries as a freshman to start him at Guard. If he’s one of the five best O lineman than he should move over and play Guard.

Utilize our backs more with some more power running plays and pass plays to them. Such as screens, swing passes, wheel routes, even quick hits over the middle.

Highlight Friermuth even more with special packages for him. Agree with other poster that we need to develop a second TE to support Pat. We have the talent to do that. Make sure we develop the TE blocking also to support power runs (short yardage, etc).

RB and TE will be towering strengths for us. I hope our O-line as well or at least they are very good which fits with my point of creating more of a power run game.

Get Clifford to settle down more in the pocket. He is too jittery. I understand he had pressure but even without pressure he had trouble surveying the field and/or simply setting his feet. Not all the time but this pops up as an improvement area.
